Semi-Final!

The Garrycastle Senior Ladies squad who will play in the County Semi-Final vs. Milltown on Sunday October 1st, 2023.

7-a-side Intercounty Tournament

Having retained Division status in the league and in preparation for championship the ladies committee ran an intercounty 7-a-side tournament on Saturday last. The club hosted teams Clan na Gael from Roscommon, St Conleths from Laois, Naomh Chiaráin, Clara and Tullamore from Offaly. This proved to be an excellent day of football showcasing all that is good about ladies football. The games were fast paced, great end to end football, fantastic passing and team play as well as great finishing. Games kicked off at 11 with both pitches in use providing great entertainment for those present. Lunch was provided to all teams after the group stages ahead of the knockout stages.

Naomh Chiaráin and Clan na Gael contested the Shield Final with Clan2 taking the prize after a great game.

This was followed by the Cup semi-finals with Clan1 taking on Tullamore and sealing victory with a late goal in the dying seconds. Garrycastle took on table toppers St Conleths and again in a tight game the home side won out by four points. The cup final saw Garrycastle take on Clan1. Play went from end to end with both sides exchanging scores and nothing between the sides at the break. The second half started in a similar vein and Garrycastle were very unfortunate in front of goals while Clan made the most of their chances and pushed home to claim victory.

It was a clean sweep for Clan winning both Shield and Cup as well as Player of the Tournament with Sinead Farrell claiming that accolade.

Brian Murphy representing Tormeys Solicitors presented the winners with their trophies. Chairperson of the ladies committee, Rhoda Costello presented Clan with the inaugural Cup. Rhoda thanked all the teams who participated, commending them on their performances, their team managers and assistants, Referees (Mark Connell, Ken Daly and Niall Ward), Umpires (Brian, Colin, Ger and Aaron), John Henson and the pitch committee, event co-ordinators for the smooth running of the event in the run up and on the day (Patrick, Vanessa, Orla & Trish), committee members who provided food and those who worked so hard on the day catering (Marie, Emma, Jackie, Peter, Sinead, Katrina, Amelia, Rhoda, Rebecca & Rionagh) and finally our sponsors on the day, Tormeys Solicitors, Behan’s fruit and veg and Lidl.

Well done to Patrick Mulvihill and the senior girls on their performance over the day and getting to the final and narrowly losing out.

History maker!

Well done to the Westmeath Ladies team, who had a comprehensive win over Longford in Pearse Park, Longford in round-2 of the TG4 Intermediate championship on Sunday (June 18th).

Special mention to Garrycastles own Aoife Connolly, who as well as scoring 2-04 on the day, also kicked a '45 meter free, which in Ladies football is worth 2 points.

Aoife makes history as the first ever LGFA player to score two '45-meter frees,  an incredible achievement.

Everyone in Garrycastle are super proud of our very own history maker!

Ladies Senior-B Champions

The Garrycastle Ladies Senior B side claimed the B title on Sunday last (October 30th) vs St. Mary's Rochfortbridge in Moate.

Playing with a strong wind in the opening half the 'Castle made good use of the wind to notch up a decent lead of 4-11 to 1-2 at the break.

The second half was all about defending that lead and taking scores when the chances presented and that is exactly what the girls did. They defended tightly, with great tackles and good clearances and, despite strong pressure from the 'Bridge they held their nerve and won out.

Overall, this was a committed performance with a great all-round effort.

Captain Sarah Dolan was presented with the cup. Congratulations to the girls and team manager Colin Clyne, and his backroom team of Brian Murphy, Orla Breathnach, Noelle Murphy and Marie McGovern. Thanks to all who travelled to Moate to support the girls.

Ladies Div.1 Champions 2022

Garrycastle 5-10, St. Mary's Rochfortbridge 4-12

[July 2nd, 2022]

The senior ladies reclaimed the Division One league title for the second year running in what was a nail-biting finish to a very entertaining game in Castledaly on Saturday last. This was certainly a game of two halves with Garrycastle owning the first half assisted by a strong breeze and notching two early goals in the opening minutes and five in total before the break to give them a very comfortable lead and looking unlikely to be caught. However, St Mary's had other ideas and dominated the opening 20 minutes of the second half and clawed back the deficit and took the lead with minutes left.

At this stage Garrycastle dug deep and with great character and calm heads they drew level at the end of normal time and a point in injury time provided the win by the minimum. Megan McCormack accepted the cup on behalf of the team. Well done to the team on holding their nerve to take home the silverware, congratulations to the management and all players involved over the course of the league with many unavailable on the day.

Team:
Megan McCormack, Sarah Carter, Aimee Duncan, Louise Connell, Orla Connaughton, Fionnuala Mulroy, Lisa Fitzpatrick, Danielle Madden, Trish Igoe, Laura Brennan, Áine Lynn,  Jane Henshaw, Aoife Connolly, Laura Walsh, Elaine McGovern.

Unfortunately it wasn’t to be. However well done to the players and the management on doing a great job on what was a very different and difficult season due to Covid.
