GARRYCASTLE 3-19 MULLINGAR SHAMROCKS 5-11 (AET )

Our Senior B side booked their place in the Final after defeating Mullingar in a pulsating semifinal that went all the way to the last few minutes of extra time to separate the sides.

Mullingar had the dream start clocking up 1-3 in the opening minutes but Garrycastle clawed back and from then on both sides exchanged leads and Garrycastle were down by 4 points at half time.

In the second half Garrycastle dominated for the most part and went 3 ahead with minutes remaining but Mullingar drew level just on full time.

Overall this was a very spirited performance from Garrycastle with some great displays of football throughout the pitch and great passion. U16 Girls (Division 2) County Final [21 September 2020]

Garrycastle 5-11 St Joseph's/Kilbeggan 1-09

At noon on Sunday last was the date set for the U 16’s final against St Joseph's/ Kilbeggan. These two sides reached this final stage unbeaten, this was all set to be a very competitive game. The game was played in Garrycastle in perfect conditions. From the onset the Garrycastle girls were out to prove their unbeaten record. The ball was thrown in by ref James Allard. The brilliant Tegan Foley won the ball and it was sent quickly into the forward line where it was won by Ella Dowling who did not hesitate to score the first goal of the game after only 5 seconds.

This was to set the pace of the the game. Ciara Finn put the ball past the keeper to score again. St Joseph’s replied with a point from play. Tegan Foley was again on target with a well finished goal.

The diligent work of the backs Rosin Mc Namara, Shauna Jameson, Orliath Lynch, Arlene Devery, Sarah Carter and Donna Molloy, made it very difficult for the St Joseph’s forwards to score. They popped over 5 points just before at the half time mark. Kasey Mulvihil scored a brilliant goal followed by another goal and a point from Ciara Finn. Elaine McGovern’s work rate was superb and she scored 2 points in this half and was instrumental in many of the scores converted. The score at half time was 5-4 for Garrycastle to St Joseph’s 0-5.

As the second half started Joseph's were quicker to attack, but the tremendous work of Gemma Duffy in goals made it very difficult for them. Garrycastle continued to score 7 more points from Ella Dowling, Rosin Murphy and Elaine McGovern. Jessica Frawley made her presence felt in the half forward line. Erika Lowe worked tirelessly throughout the game.

Garrycastle finished the stronger side 5-11 to St Joseph's 1-09. Senior 'B' Ladies [31 August 2020]

ST. MARYS 4-05, GARRYCASTLE 3-07

Our Senior B team put in a great performance away to St Mary's last Tuesday evening in the 2nd round of the Senior B championship. The Garrycastle girls led by 3 points at half-time on a scoreline of 2-04 to 1-04, after battling hard in extremely wet and windy conditions.

Unfortunately, St Mary's finished strongly, winning the game by the smallest of margins.

Final score 3-07 to 4-05.

Well done girls on a brilliant team performance.

Under 12 Girls [24 August 2020]

On Wednesday evening a reduced squad travelled to play Clann na nGael, Roscommon. The challenge gave some of the younger players a chance to play a full game and they really grabbed the opportunity as some great performances resulting in a very narrow victory for the Garrycastle girls after an open and exciting end to end tussle. Many thanks to Clann na nGael Ladies for the invitation and we hope to return the favour in the coming weeks.

The full squad were then involved in another very entertaining match against a strong and very skilful Moate side on a wet and windy Saturday morning. There was little between the teams throughout with the result in doubt right up until the final quarter before the ability of the Moate girls to move the ball quickly between the hands and to take their scores made the difference at the end. Despite suffering their first defeat this was Garrycastle’s best performance of the season so far against a very good Moate side.

The girls will finish off the county series with a trip away to Loughnavalley next Saturday.

Under 12 Girls [17 August 2020]

Garrycastle 1-06 Caulry 0-03

The under 12 girls maintained their unbeaten record so far thanks to a hard fought win away to Caulry on another very warm Saturday afternoon. 24 girls travelled and they all played their part in a 1-6 to 0-3 victory. Garrycastle had the better of the first half and held a comfortable looking lead at half time but a skilful Caulry side put in a very strong third quarter and only some very good defending and solid goalkeeping kept the lead intact.

The fourth quarter saw some very good play by both teams but Garrycastle just had that bit more going forward and that made the difference in the end. As well as putting in a very disciplined defensive performance a very encouraging aspect for Garrycastle was that they had six different scorers on the day.

The girls will finish off the u12 series with games against Moate and Loughnavalley over the next two weekends.

Under 16 Girls [11 August 2020]

Garrycastle 2-15 Miltown 0-08

It has been a very busy week for our u16s squad. They played their first game of the championship on Monday evening in Garrycastle against Milltown. This was an end to end pulsating game with both teams evenly matched although this was not reflected in the final score. The diligent work of the backs Rosin Mc Namara, Shauna Jameson, Orliath Lynch, Arlene Devery, Sarah Carter and Donna Molloy, Emma Kearney, Emma Connaughton and Jasmine Molloy left it difficult for the Miltown forwards to penetrate. Superb goal keeping from Gemma Duffy keeping a clean sheet. Tegan Foley and Jessica Frawley were commanding in midfield. The half forwards Amy Mc Govern, Nessa Mc Namara, Elaine McGovern lead by Rosin Murphy drove consistently forward creating and taking scoring chances. The full forward line of Ciara Finn, Ella Dowling, Kasey Mulvihill, Orla Barry and Meleigh Mc Donnagh worked hard throughout ending the match on a score line of 2-15 to Miltown 0-8.

Garrycastle 9-12 Killucan 2-06

On Thursday evening the squad travelled to Kilucan to play the home side. A strong Kilucan side opened the scoring with 2 goals in quick succession. The Garrycastle girls settled down after the uneasy start with a great goal from Ella Dowling. This was followed shortly by a point from Rosin Murphy. Gemma Duffy was once again superb in goals keeping the home side from scoring any more goals. The Garrycastle girls pressed hard and kept the scoreboard moving in their direction putting up an impressive score line of 9-12 to Kilucans 2-6.

Garrycastle Team and scores: Gemma Duffy,Orliath Lynch, Rosin Mc Namara, Shauna Jameson, Sarah Carter, Arlene Devery, Donna Molloy, Erika Lowe (1-0),Tegan Foley (1-1), Rosin Murphy (1-2), Elaine Mc Govern (3-2), Jessica Frawley, Ciara Finn (0-3), Ella Dowling (2-3), Kasey Mulvihil, Amy Mc Govern (0-1), Orla Barry, Nessa McNamara, Jasmine Molloy, Emma Kearney, Emma Connaughton, Hazel Donegan (1-0) McKiernan, Mandisa Ni Chluaid.

Under 14 Girls [11 August 2020]

The U14s travelled to Caulry Sunday evening for their third group game of the Division 2 championship and after a great contest just lost out by the narrowest of margins. Garrycastle were the better team early on and led by 6 points at one stage but Caulry finished the first half strongly to trail by only two at the break 1-5 to 0-6. Caulry poured on the pressure early in the second half and moved into a two point lead only for Garrycastle to fight back brilliantly with a goal and two points. Both sides struck the woodwork before Caulry scored what proved to be the winning goal minutes from the end. Garrycastle did everything they could to try and manufacture an equaliser but just couldn’t find a way through and Caulry maintained their 100% record on a scoreline of 2-08 to 2-07.

Garrycastle team: Gemma Duffy, Aislinn Kelly, Emma Connaughton, Kaleigh Clyne, Rihanna Lowe, Jasmine Molloy, Cadhla Kelly, Kacey Mulvihill, Jessica Frawley (1-1) , Tanya Stephane, Hazel Donegan (1-6), Lucy Kearney, Lara-Ellen Keena McDaid, Moya McKiernan, Mandisa Ni Chluaid.

Under 12 Girls [11 August 2020]

Garrycastle played their second game of the under 12 Series against neighbours Athlone on Saturday afternoon. A large squad of 26 players made the short journey over to Pairc Ui Chiarain and every one of the girls played their part in a narrow victory against very determined opponents. In truth there was very little between the two squads with both teams enjoying good spells over the four quarters and it was Garrycastle’s ability to take their goal chances that just about managed to swing things their way. Garrycastle will face another tough test next weekend away to Caulry but they can be very pleased with their progress so far.

Under 14 Girls Championship (Div 2) [27 July 2020]

Garrycastle under 14 girls hosted St. Marys Rochfortbridge last Thursday evening in their second match of the Division 2 championship. Due to a couple of late withdrawals from the home squad the game started as a 14 a side match. Garrycastle got off to the better start with two great goals scored by Hazel Donegan following excellent work from Mandisa Ni Chluaid and Jasmine Molloy. Kacey Mulvihill added two further points to the tally, one from a free. At the other end some great defending by Kaleigh Clyne, in particular, and good goalkeeping by Gemma Duffy stopped a hard running St Mary’s side breaking through for goals. A very unfortunate injury to Matilda Parker, who was enjoying a fine debut in the half forward line, midway through the first half, resulted in the home side having to see out the remainder of the match a player down. Garrycastle led 3-02 to 0-1 at the break thanks to a further goal scored by Moya McKiernan.

The second half was another competitive affair but it was Garrycastle who again dominated on the scoreboard mainly due to the scoring prowess of Hazel Donegan, who finished with a total of 3-3 to her name, and Moya McKiernan who scored 2-2. Jessica Frawley and Kacey Mulvihill also excelled in midfield while Jasmine Molloy and Cadhla Kelly consistently drove forward from half back creating some great scores. Emma Connaughton, Aisling Kelly and Rihanna Lowe all put in big second halves at the back, while half forward Tanya Stephane worked very hard all through and fellow under 12 player Mandisa Ni Chluaid enjoyed a superb game at full forward. Overall, an excellent performance from Garrycastle who put themselves back into contention in the division with this win.

The team wishes Matilda a speedy recovery and look forward to having her back on the squad.

GARRYCASTLE: Gemma Duffy, Aislinn Kelly, Emma Connaughton, Kaleigh Clyne, Rihanna Lowe, Jasmine Molloy, Cadhla Kelly, Jessica Frawley, Kacey Mulvihill (1-02) Tanya Stephane, Hazel Donegan (3-03), Matilda Parker, Moya McKiernan (2-02) Mandisa Ni Chluaid.

Senior Ladies Championship [27 July 2020]

GARRYCASTLE 2-10 THE DOWNS 1-07

Last Saturday our senior girls ground out a hard earned victory over The Downs in the first round of the Fair Green Championship. This game was played in The Downs under Covid restrictions with a small crowd and slippy underfoot conditions. While Garrycastle had the upper hand for most of the 1st half a Downs goal just after the water break had them lagging by just one point at the break. Garrycastle started the second half lively and 2 goals put us well ahead. However until the final whistle went it was a pressure game all the way for Garrycastle but won out in the end 2-10 to 1-7.

U14 Girls Div. 2 Championship vs Loughnavalley [20 July 2020]

The Garrycastle under-14 girls travelled to Loughnavalley for their first match of the Division 2 championship.

Loughnavalley adapted much better early on to the very difficult weather conditions, dominating the first quarter and converting several goal chances leaving Garrycastle with a huge mountain to climb. The girls improved as the half went on but the game looked out of sight at the break. However, Garrycastle were a transformed team in the second half and looked the better side managing to create some excellent team scores while the defence tightened up considerably at the other end.

The final score was 10-04 to 4-05 in favour of a very good home team who had some excellent forwards. Had Garrycastle managed to get into the game just a little earlier the result might possibly have been in doubt but the slow start was understandable with the 15 players including several under 12 girls and some were playing their first competitive game for the club.

All the girls did very well with the more experienced players leading by example particularly in the second half and there is plenty of reason for optimism with this young squad.

Team: Aislinn Kelly, Rihanna Lowe, Emma Connaughton, Kaleigh Clyne, LaraEllen Keena McDaid, Mandisa Ni Chluaid, Jasmine Molloy, Jessica Frawley (0-2), Kacey Mulvihill, Cadhla Kelly, Hazel Donegan (1-01), Lucy Kearney (1-0), Moya McKiernan (2-02), Tanya Stephane, Mairead Mc Bride.
