Minor Div.2 Final

[2024-10-20]

Garrycastle 1-09, The Downs 0-11

With Storm Ashley passing over the country, the Garrycastle minors were in action in the final match of the season vs The Downs in Bunbrosna in the Div.2 Final.

The Downs played with the strong wind blowing down the pitch in the first half and they made the most of the conditions. They took the game to Garrycastle, working hard to get into shooting positions and using the wind effectively.
The Garrycastle lads had to work hard for scores as the wind made progress difficult and as the game progressed the Downs stretched their lead to 4 points before Garrycastle got off the mark, registering a score by James McHugh. At this stage the Downs were playing with 12 men behind the ball when not in possession, making life difficult for our lads as space was at a minimum.
The lads did not panic, however, and tacked on another score from a free by McHugh to reduce the margin to 2 points.

Both teams then exchanged scores, the Garrycastle score coming from Darragh Glennon in the latter stages of the first half.  As half-time approached, The Downs pushed players up the pitch to take advantage of the wind and scored another 3 points without reply to leave the half-time score at The Downs 0-08, Garrycastle 0-03.

As the second half started, The Downs scored an early point to push them into a 6-point lead. But now, starting to use the wind to their advantage, the Garrycastle lads started to run at The Downs defence and were rewarded with a penalty which McHugh slotted to the right of the keeper. The Downs regrouped after the penalty and both teams exchanged frees to keep the gap to 2 points as the game entered the last quarter.
The Garrycastle lads were now sensing that victory was a possibility, and really pushed up on The Downs kickouts, and started to win the key battles in the middle of the field.

With 10 minutes to go Garrycastle were only a single point behind, and a foul on Andrew Henson saw McHugh slotting over the equalising point from 40 meters out on the left hand side of the pitch.
The lads now pressed hard for the winner and were rewarded with another free in almost the same position which McHugh slotted over again to push Garrycastle into the lead with 1 minute to go in normal time. The Garrycastle lads pressed hard and gave no space to The Downs for the 3 extra minutes played to close out this highly entertaining game.

Minor Div.2 Semi-Final

[2024-10-10]

Garrycastle 4-14, Caulry 1-04

The under-18 lads had a good win over near neighbours Caulry, in the semi-final of this year’s Div. 2 championship played in Garrycastle on Thursday evening.

Right from the off, both teams gave little away. The tackling was physical but fair, with any player bringing the ball into contact doing so at their own risk. Caulry were first to trouble the scoreboard with a well worked goal, while it took Garrycastle until the tenth minute to register their first score.

The game really came to life after 15 minutes when James McHugh popped up to finish a good move to the net. The same player was in imperious form, and punished any discretion by the visitors, kicking 3 points from frees in the first half. However, as is often the case, the game switched again as Caulry hit a purple patch of their own in the second quarter, but fortunately from the Garrycastle viewpoint their shooting was off target and they registered only one point in this period. As the first half came to a close, David Carter found himself one on one with the Caulry keeper, and finished expertly to push Garrycastle further in front. At half time the score was 2-04 to 1-01 in favour of the home team.

As the second half started, and shooting into the clubhouse end Garrycastle were ruthless scoring 1-05, the goal a well taken effort from Sean O’Donoghue, and the pick of the points being a superb score from Dylan Frawley. Garrycastle were well on top at this stage, and the visitors were finding it difficult to handle the pace and movement of the Garrycastle lads.

As the game went on, the visitors discipline started to slip resulting in them finishing the game with only 13 players. Garrycastle used their numerical advantage to great effect, scoring another 1-03 in the last 10 minutes with excellent points from Darragh Glennon and a free from McHugh. As the game ended, Luke Duffy scored a screamer of a goal, hitting the top corner of the net from 30 yards.

The reward for the Garrycastle lads is a chance to retain the Div.2 championship they won last year, when they meet The Downs in this year’s Division 2 final.

Scorers on the evening.  James McHugh 1-07, Sean O'Donoghue 1-02, David Carter 1-01, Darragh Glennon 0-03, Luke Duffy 1-00, Dylan Frawley 0-01.

Match Team: C Norris,  M Turner, A Mannion, D Stankard, N McKeon, D Carter, D Frawley, O Mulvihill, A Keegan, D Glennon, O O'Donoghue, A Henson, S O'Donoghue, J McHugh, K Keegan.

Minor Div.2 Quarter-Final

[2024-09-22]

Garrycastle 3-10, St. Marys Rochfortbridge 0-14

Garrycastle Minors were eager to impress in their away knockout Quarter final. Having struggled all season with player availability and after a disappointing league and Championship group stage, the Garrycastle team were really fired up for this match.

Starting strongly, they settled into the match quickly and caused the St. Mary’s team problems with their positive approach to the match, kicking and running the ball at pace. Shooting into the clubhouse end in the first half, Garrycastle rattled the net with 2 excellent moves finished by the O'Donoghue brothers, Sean and Oisin, and some excellent long range free taking by Niadh Shine keeping the score board ticking over.

St. Mary’s tried to get going but Garrycastle ‘keeper Cian Norris pulled off an excellent save to deny the home team their only goal opportunity in the first half. Just before half time both sides were reduced to 14 players which opened up the game a little. The half time score was 2-06 to 0-07 in favour of Garrycastle.

In the second half both teams played with a sweeper to limit goal scoring opportunities, with Garrycastle playing the better football at this stage. As the game progressed, tiredness crept in, and the tackling on both sides offered up frees in scoreable positions, of which the St. Mary’s team took the better advantage. However the Garrycastle lads continued to work hard and Sean O’Donoghue was on the end of an excellent move involving Darragh Glennon, Oisin Mulvihill and Andrew Henson to slot the ball into the net to push Garrycastle further into the lead.

Both teams exchanged further scores, but Garrycastle finished strongly, and now move on to the semi-final, where they will face near neighbours Caulry.

Match Team: C Norris, M Turner, A Mannion, N McKeon, Dylan Frawley, D Carter, K Keegan, O Mulvihill, A Keegan (0-01), D Glennon, O O'Donoghue (1-00), A Henson (0-01), S O'Donoghue (2-01), J McHugh (0-04), N Shine (0-03).
