Garrycastle made the trip up to Shandonagh Saturday morning for the latest round of Go Games where we fielded two teams with the host club along with St Paul’s Delvin, Milltownpass and Kilbeggan.
Despite the misty, general wet and slippy conditions the girls adapted well and played some tremendous football over the hour.
Both our teams played 3 mini games with every single girl contributing to the overall team effort. The defenders were tight throughout and put in a lot of blocks to deny their opponents scoring opportunities with Beatrix Munnik and Isabelle McCallon shining in this regard. Grace Shaw also had some great clearances by foot which gave some much needed relief to the defence.
Midfield despite a slow start in the first game were really solid and effective when they got going and contributed significantly to our offensive play with Fiadh Duignan & Amelie Ryan picking off some really good scores.
The forwards showed for every ball and took on their opponents at every available opportunity which was a real positive, Hannah O’Shaughnessy and Chloe Johnson picked off some fine scores after some brilliant build up and team play.
Thanks to Shandonagh GAA for hosting the event and running it so efficiently.

Many thanks to Declan Keyes and Mobile Motor Factors for their kind sponsorship of footballs to u8 girls at their recent end of year event.
Our under 8 girls enjoyed a great evening of football on Wednesday playing our neighbours from Clann na nGael in Garrycastle.
We had over 26 girls involved for Garrycastle and we were able to field 3 teams.
Despite it being their first outing of the season, the quality of football was very good. Lots of fun and game time was had by all.
Well done to all the girls and coaches involved.
Garrycastle Under-8 Girls team for 2024
We had 37 under-8 girls with us this year who enjoyed approximately twenty training sessions, eight blitzes; and a friendly but competitive game, hosted by Clann Na nGael in June.
Great commitment was shown by all players throughout the year with an average of 28 girls per training session and fielding three teams for blitzes.
We also welcomed three new players to the team. A number of the girls showed their skills in the street leagues and were more than a match for the Under-7 boys.
There will be ten girls moving up to Under-10s, 27 girls remaining with two moving up from nursery for 2024.
The year ended with a friendly match against Athlone GAA with food and facepainting afterwards.
A special thank you to Niall Ward and his whistle. A must for all coaches.
Coaches: Anne-Marie Cahill, Lisa-Anne Roache, Thomas Duignan, Niall Ward, Niall Lynchehaun, Derek Murray, John Burke, Emmett Kenna.

The Garrycastle Under-8s hosted their last blitz of 2021 in Garrycastle on Saturday morning. It has been wonderful to see how much this group of girls have progressed this year. Well done girls! Thanks to all the coaches who helped organise a very successful blitz.
Our under 8’s took part in the first blitz of the season played in Caulry on Saturday morning. Garrycastle had 3 teams participating in the event with many of the girls playing for the first time. A great display of skills was on show and enjoyed by all. Well done to the girls and the managers and their backroom support.
Under-8 Girls The under-8 girls enjoyed approximately 15 training sessions, 2 very competitive games vs Castledaly in July and September, and participated in our very popular street league competition until a resurgence in Covid-19 cases in the country meant a cessation of all contact sport activities.
Mentors: Ciáran O’Neill, Michael Nugent & Rhoda Costello. Additional assistance provided by Hazel Donegan, Jessica Frawley, Kayleigh Clyne and Emma Kearney.
On Sunday morning the Garrycastle U7 and U9 Boys once again joined forces with the U8 and U10 girls to contest Rounds 5 and 6 of the Garrycastle Street Leagues.
With plenty of skills and determination on show; the team spirit, sportsmanship and team work was outstanding in all teams. With the full time whistles barely blown, focus immediately switched to the penultimate weekend of games as the players compared scorelines and talked tactics for the matches ahead.
Sunday morning saw the start of the annual Garrycastle Street League tournament at the Club grounds. For the 2020 competition, mixed teams from Under 10 and Under 8 Girls along with the Under 9 and Under 7 Boys squads took to the field to do battle.
On a hugely enjoyable morning's football, 63 players took part in the opening round of fiercely competitive fixtures in a wonderful showcase of skill, teamwork, fun and friendship.
The organising committee would like to express most sincere thanks to the local schools, Cornamaddy NS, Clonbonny NS, St Ciaran's NS Baylin, Coosan NS, Scoil na gCeithre Máistrí and Ballinahown NS for their fantastic show of community support to provide jerseys for the teams.
