A truly brave Garrycastle performance wasn’t enough against a powerful St. Loman’s side in the Minor Division One final on Sunday afternoon.
St. Loman’s had proved far too strong for all opposing teams all season, with several of their players featuring for their senior side that narrowly lost the county final and there had been a big gap between the teams when they met in the group stages just a few weeks ago.
A similar outcome looked on the cards here after just five minutes with St Lomans pouring on the early pressure and racing into a seven point lead, 2-01 to 0-00. A couple of frees from Amelie Henson steadied things a little before an inspirational point from Hazel Donegan left two goals between the sides on the 15 minute mark. Another St. Loman’s goal was followed by a Garrycastle pointed free before a key moment in the game happened.
A lovely move saw Amelie Henson bearing down on goal before seeming to be pulled down in the small square. However, play was waved on and from the clearance St. Loman’s moved the ball down the field for their fourth goal, a six point swing.
To Garrycastle’s great credit they responded with a Hazel Donegan point and then great work by Aislinn Kelly set up Izzy Kearney for a typical finishers goal to leave the score 4-04 to 1-05 at the break.
Garrycastle roared out of the traps in the second half with a brilliant left footed strike from Amelie Henson into the top corner of the net after another flowing move. Garrycastle then took virtually complete control of the game for the next ten minutes but spurned numerous chances for both goals and points and somehow it was only St. Loman’s who scored in this period with a fine breakaway point.
The game became a bit scrappy for the last twenty minutes as a tiring Garrycastle began to run out of ideas against a packed St. Loman’s defence and were picked off at the other end as the St. Loman’s superiority began to tell again.
There was still time for a final goal from Hazel Donegan that her overall performance deserved.
Overall, a great effort by a young Garrycastle squad with the vast majority eligible for minor for at least another two years. Best on the day were Amelie Henson, Hazel Donegan, Libby McHugh and the tireless Olivia Collins while Siobhan Ni Chluaid put in an excellent display in goals, particularly in the first half when she kept her team in the game.

The Garrycastle Minor Ladies delivered an all-round team performance on Sunday as they overcame the Moate All-White Ladies on a cold, foggy afternoon at TUS, winning out on a score line of 5-10 to 1-10 in their Division 1 semi-final.
Despite the challenging conditions, the girls held their composure and at half-time they held a narrow lead, 2-05 to 1-06, thanks to some hard running and sharp support play.
After the break, it was Garrycastle who emerged with real intent. A flurry of second-half goals pushed the game firmly in Garrycastle’s favour, and their determined defending ensured the Moate team could not close the gap.
A huge well done to all players and coaches for a tremendous display of skill, teamwork, and resilience. And a big thank you to our loyal supporters who stood on the side-lines in the cold and fog - your encouragement made all the difference.

Another good win for this young minor team against opposition who had been far too strong when the teams played each other at under-16 level two years ago. Shandonagh were the better side in the first half but were wasteful in front of goal and they should have been in front by more than three points at half time. Garrycastle had goalkeeper Ellen Parker to thank for keeping the score down making one brilliant save when a goal seemed inevitable. Garrycastle emerged a different side in the second half and put together some very good passages of attacking play to emerge deserved winners. Jessica Frawley and Libby McHugh were strong throughout for Garrycastle while Amelie Henson and Aislinn Kelly excelled going forward. Kaleigh Clyne had a very solid second half, as did Rionagh Costello. Hannah Ganly and Ella Sweeney also deserve mention, but every player worked very hard and contributed to the win. Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Amelie Henson who picked up an injury during the game.
Squad: Ellen Parker, Doireann Keena, Cadhla Kelly, Amy Carter, Kaleigh Clyne, Libby McHugh, Rionagh Costello, Aislinn Kelly (0-6), Jessica Frawley, Hannah Ganly, Amelie Henson (2-4), Jane Byrne, Ella Sweeney (1-2), Siobhan Ni Chluaid, Mandisa Ni Chluaid, Roisin Ni Chluaid.

A very young Garrycastle minor side got their championship campaign off to a good start with a win over Milltown in Division 2 on Tuesday evening.
The foundations were laid in a strong first half. Aislinn Kelly put over the first score from a free and Mandisa Ni Chluaid followed up with two quick fire goals before Milltown put their first point on the board.
An excellent team move from Garrycastle ended with a neat finish to the bottom corner from Hannah Ganly. Milltown pulled a point back before Hannah Ganly swung over another point to see Garrycastle lead 3-02 to 0-02 at the break, although they really should have been further ahead with some poor decision making in attack letting them down as the half went on.
Milltown were an improved side in the second half and put over some well worked points to reduce the gap but a couple of Aislinn Kelly points and a fine individual goal from captain Kacey Mulvihill steadied the ship and Lara Ellen Keena McDaid made the game safe with a nice finish after being denied by a brilliant save from the Milltown keeper only minutes earlier.
Overall, every Garrycastle player can feel pleased with their effort but special mention should go to keeper Ellen Parker and her entire defence who worked very hard all through. The minors have a break now before their next round robin group game away to Shandonagh on 6th of August.
Squad: Ellen Parker, Amy Carter, Cadhla Kelly, Orla Turner, Rebecca Sleator, Libby McHugh, Kaleigh Clyne, Aislinn Kelly (0-3, 1f), Kacey Mulvihill (1-0), Jane Byrne, Eve Murphy, Hannah Ganly (1-1), Roisin Ni Chluaid, Mandisa Ni Chluaid (2-0), Ella Sweeney, Siobhan Ni Chluaid, Hannah Murray, Rionagh Costello, Lara Ellen Keena McDaid (1-0), Jola Kearney, Wiktoria Wziatek.
Minor Girls All Minor championship games were deferred due to Covid-19 restrictions. A decision regarding rescheduling of the minor games is due to be made early in January 2021 by the county board.
Our minors suffered defeat at the hands of St Lomans when we lost out by the minimum. This was a very entertaining game of football and the Garrycastle girls played great football and were unlucky not to have taken the game.
GARRYCASTLE: Sarah Kelly, Faye Hannify, Kate Derwin, Rebecca Norris, Eimear O'Neill, Stephanie O'Neill, Muirin Mulvihill, Ciara McGovern, Grace Halligan, Shannon Mulvihill, Sarah Carter, Donnahay Molloy, Elaine McGovern and Emily Ruane.
Our minor girls played Mullingar away in the first round of the championship. Down a few key players for various reasons left us with only 14. Playing with a strong wind in opening half Garrycastle notched up 4-4 but Mullingar got 2 goals against the run of play in injury time to leave them 4 points behind at the break.
The second half was end to end with each side claiming goals but Mullingar made better use of the wind and claimed the points. Despite the loss Garrycastle worked hard and were unlucky not to have added a few more goals but there were some fine performances throughout the pitch.
