On a perfect evening for football, the Garrycastle under-16 boys delivered a powerful performance to overcome a spirited Milltownpass side in a thrilling, end-to-end contest last Monday evening in Garrycastle.
The Garrycastle lads started brightly, showcasing excellent work rate and fluid movement across the pitch. Their attacking play was sharp and purposeful, with slick passing movements unlocking the Milltownpass defence early on. Goals from Aaron Mulvihill, Jack Kilmurray, and Ryan Kilmurray gave Garrycastle a deserved lead.
Midway through the first half, Milltownpass started to respond, with their full-forward proving a constant threat in attack. However, the Garrycastle defence stood firm, working cohesively to snuff out danger and maintain their advantage. The pace of the game suited both teams, who pushed forward at every opportunity in search of scores.
At the break, Garrycastle led 3-05 to 1-08 in what was shaping up to be a tightly contested affair.
The second half saw a more disciplined defensive effort from Milltownpass, who closed down space and put much more pressure on the Garrycastle forwards. Despite this, our lads remained composed and used their bench wisely to maintain intensity and energy levels. The final quarter brought plenty of drama as Garrycastle received a series of black cards. But instead of faltering, the team rallied, producing perhaps the moment of the match - a sweeping move from deep in defence ending in Cristian Necil firing a brilliant goal to the net.
Luke Standard added two crucial points late on to extend the lead to eight, giving Garrycastle a cushion. Milltownpass grabbed a late point, but it wasn’t enough to threaten the result as the final whistle confirmed a well-earned 7-point victory for Garrycastle.
With other results going in their favour, Garrycastle U16s now leapfrog Lilliput into second place in the group, edging ahead by a single score difference point. The win sets up an exciting league final showdown against the Millmore Gaels.
This performance was a testament to the strength and depth of the Garrycastle panel, and the players can take great confidence into the final after a superb all-round display.

Garrycastle hosted Lilliput Gaels in round 4 of the division 3 league on bank holiday Monday evening.
Garrycastle started the game strongly, kicking some excellent points to show the visiting team they meant business. This was an end to end match with both teams looking for the win. Garrycastle however had a 10 minute spell in the first half where the visitors hit a purple patch, and cut Garrycastle apart, rattling the net on 4 occasions with Garrycastle trailing by 7 points at one stage.
The Garrycastle team were working hard for each other, kept their heads up, and did not let the score affect their commitment.
The half-time time score saw the home team trail by 4 points on a scoreline of Garrycastle 1-08 v Lilliput 4-04.
Garrycastle regrouped at half time and came out all fired up and their never give up attitude kept the scoreboard ticking over with some excellent shooting from all the forwards, and by now the defense and midfield was starting to get the better of the respective markers. With 5 minutes to go Garrycastle nudged in front in this tight match to claim a well deserved victory.
All in all it was a great evening for this Garrycastle under-16 team who were well worth their victory.

Garrycastle travelled to Multyfarnham in round 3 of the league on an excellent Easter Bank Holiday Monday evening for football.
Garrycastle started well, however their shooting and shot selection let them down, missing a possible 3-05 in the first 12 minutes alone, and letting the home side push into a 3 point lead. As the first half was coming to a close, however, the Garrycastle lads found their shooting boots, and closed the half out all level at 0-06 each.
In the second half Multyfarnham again were very economical with their shooting and their midfield play caused Garrycastle problems. Garrycastle were struggling to counter the Multyfarnham work rate as they pushed further ahead and the home team were 11 points up with roughly 10 minutes remaining. Garrycastle's Darragh Clyne scored a great individual goal which rallied the team but with 8 minutes to go their momentum was brought to a halt again, as the game was stopped due to an injury.
Once it restarted, Garrycastle realised they could salvage something out of this match and rattled the net again with Sheriff scoring with his first touch of the game. The Multyfarnham lads rallied and kicked a 2 pointer to stretch their lead back out to 4 points, before tha tlead was cut to the minimum, when Fionn Murphy was on the end of a well worked team goal when Garrycastle moved the ball the full length of the pitch. It was just too late unfortunately, and the home team secured a deserved one point win on the night.
Match Team: J. O'Brien, B. Redmond, D. Crosbie, S. Glennon, R. O'Connor, A. Mulvihill, L. Stankard, J. Tucker(c)(0-01), D. Nicholson(0-02), F. Murphy (1-01), A. Costello, C. Keegan, T. Mulvihill (0-02), D. Clyne (1-01), E. Joyce (0-01).

The Garrycastle under-16 boys travelled to St. Mary’s Rochfortbridge in round 2 of the U16 Div.3 League this week.
On a fine evening for football, Garrycastle started quickly in this match and were 1-01 to no score up before St Marys knew what happened. Garrycastle, with their first touch greatly improved, were moving the ball very well and produced some slick passages of play with six different scorers in the first half alone. The half-time score saw Garrycastle ahead by 2-09 to 1-02.
In the second half the Garrycastle team continued where they had left off with an excellent move the full length of the pitch to produce a goal by Dylan Nicholson. St. Mary’s tried to get back into the game but the Garrycastle defensive unit of Redmond, Crosbie, O’Connor, Lynch, A Mulvihill and Necil were well up for the challenge. The midfield pair of Nicholson and Tucker worked hard all throughout game and the forwards moved with purpose with T Mulvihill and Kilmurray causing the St Mary’s defence all sorts of issues.
You could not question the Garrycastle work rate throughout this game, however as the game moved into the last few minutes, the concentration lapsed a little, and St. Mary’s broke through for two soft goals from frees as Garrycastle expected them to take the points on offer. Overall, though, this was a great away win for this team who are continuously improving.
Best on the evening for Garrycastle was Rory O'Connor.
Team: J O'Brien, B Redmond, D Crosbie, R O'Connor, C Lynch, A Mulvihill, C Necil (0-02), J Tucker (1-02), D Nicholson (1-04), L Stankard, S Bamidele, C Keegan (0-01), C McCormack, T Mulvihill (2-04), R Kilmurray (0-03).
Subs: D Clyne (1-00) for McCormack (30mins) T Gallagher for J O'Brien (40mins), F Murphy (0-01) for C Keegan (45mins), B Nally for L Stankard(50mins), C McCormack for Bamidele (55mins), C Keegan for R Kilmurray (55mins).
Subs not used: E Joyce, A Costello, S Glennon (all Injured).

The Garrycastle lads started slowly in their first league match of the season and were 2-01 to no score down before they realised they were in a match. However they fought their way back into the game with a well taken goal by Cristian Necil and a Darragh Clyne penalty bringing them back into touching distance of the visitors. However, the Millmore Gaels lads struck again with another goal pushing them back in front. However this didn't overly worry the Garrycastle lads, who got going again and scored another goal through Darragh Clyne. The Garrycastle team now started to produce some slick passages of play, but on a number of occasions, however, their first touch let them down and as the game neared half time they trailed the visitors by two points on a score line of 3-05 to 3-03.
Garrycastle came out in the second half all fired up and struck first with a Jack Tucker goal which was an excellent move up the full length of the pitch. Millmore Gaels, now playing with the wind, reorganised and both sides scored goals to keep the game close with Garrycastle going 2 points up with quarter of an hour to go. While there was no question about the workrate of the Garrycastle lads, as the game moved into the last 10 minutes the visitors started to win the Garrycastle kick-outs and pinned Garrycastle in their half of the field. Under heavy pressure, our lads conceded a number of kickable frees as the game time ran out, which allowed the Millmore Gaels team to come away with the win.
Overall, this was a good display by the Garrycastle lads for the first competitive match of the year. Best on the evening for Garrycastle was Jack Tucker.
Match Team: T Gallagher, S Glennon, C Lynch, R O'Connor, A Mulvihill, J Tucker (1-0), D Crosbie, D Nicholson, C Necil (1-01), J Kilmurray (1-0), A Costello, T Mulvihill, R Kilmurray, D Clyne (2-03), C Keegan (1-0).

Garrycastle u16s overcame a spirited St. Michael’s side on Monday evening in round 3 of the Division 3 championship on a score line of 2-13 to 1-05.
The home side made a fine start playing direct football aided by a strong breeze and led by 1-03 to no score after 15 minutes. To their credit St. Michaels fought their way back into the game aided by some indiscipline by the home side leaving the half time score at 1-05 to 1-02 in favour of Garrycastle.
The second half saw Garrycastle taking a tighter grip on the game and good defending restricted St. Michaels to limited scoring opportunities, while the attack kept the score board ticking over to successfully see out the game.
Team: Scott Lowe, Aaron Mulvihll, Breehin Redmond, Harry Lowe, Christian Necil, Jack Tucker McCallon, Ruari O’Connor, Dylan Nicholson (0-05), Darragh Clyne, Eoghan Joyce, Louie Shine (0-02), Fionn Murphy, Conor Keegan (1-03), Darragh Glennon (1-02), Senan Nugent, Ryan Kilmurray (0-01), Tadhg Mulvihill, Hugo Hannin, Sheriff Bamidele.

Garrycastle under-16s commenced their championship with a first round loss to Millmore Gaels at home on Monday last. The score line of 3-18 to 1-05 did not reflect the effort of the home team who were short many players on the evening. Having started the game with 13 players which was further reduced to 11 in the second half due to injuries, the home side did not falter for effort and fought to the end.
Team on the night, Scott Lowe, Eoghan Joyce, Daniel Stankard, Aidan Costello, Breehin Redmond, Ruari O’Connor, Dillon Nicholson, Darragh Clyne, Jack Tucker, Louie Shine, Fionn Murphy, Ryan Kilmurray and Conor Keegan.

The Garrycastle under-16s brought their league campaign to an end on Monday evening with a loss in the Division 3 final away to Millmore Gaels in Ballymore. Garrycastle started the game brightly and lead the early exchanges but were three points behind at the interval on a score of 1-07 to 0-07. The second half saw the Millmore Gaels side never relinquish the lead and while the exchanges were close, the home side’s greater teamwork on the evening sealed the result. Garrycastle now look forward to the championship.

Leading by six points at half time, Garrycastle dominated the opening half playing some good football and displaying an appetite for hard work. In the second half, the home side continued to move the ball well and take their chances to keep the score board ticking over. A good all round team performance saw a much improved Garrycastle side take the points on a 6.11 to 3.7 score line.

The Garrycastle under-16s travelled to Milltown on Monday evening to take on Millmore Gaels in the 4th round of the league. Garrycastle set out their stall early with goals from Darragh Clyne and Louie Shine and continued to play well and dominate the first half. Garrycastle led by 9 points early in the second half, but then faced a spirited Millmore fight back coupled with a drop in the intensity level which marked the first half, and this led to a nervous conclusion to the match. However, Garrycastle held on and saw the match out with a 2 point victory.
Scorers: Darragh Glennon 2-01, Darragh Clyne 1-01, Dylan Nicholson 1-01, Louie Shine 1-01.
Team : James Derwin, Senan Nugent, Daniel Stankard, Jack Dowling, Breehin Redmond, Oisin O’Donoghue, Ruairi O'Connor, Darragh Clyne, Jack Tucker, Conor Keegan, Dylan Nicholson, Rian Hayden, Ryan Kilmurray, Darragh Glennon, Louie Shine, Jack Kilmurray, Eddie Galvin.

Garrycastle came up short in this 3rd round under-16 Division 3 league match away to Multyfarnham on Wednesday evening. Playing with the aid of a stiff wind in the first half, Garrycastle led by two at half time. The lead seemed insufficient for the conditions and so it proved to be as Multyfarnham took full advantage and scored more freely in the second half.
The final score did not do Garrycastle justice who were well in this game but came up short on the evening.
Garrycastle: Scott Lowe, Jack Dowling, Jack Tucker McCallon, Eddie Galvin, Ruari O’Connor, Daniel Stankard, Breehin Redmon, James Derwin, Dylan Nicholson, Rian Hayden, Louie Shine, Conor Keegan, Jack Kilmurray, Fionn Murphy, Senan Nugent, Aidan Costello, Eoghan Joyce, Ryan Kilmurray

In this 2nd round game played in Athlone, Garrycastle, with the advantage of a slight wind dominated the first half and looked to be in full control. Points from Darragh Glennon (5) and Dylan Nicholson (2) led to a five point lead at halftime for the visitors on a scoreline of 0-07 to 0-02.
However it all changed in the 2nd half with the Athlone players upping their game and they started to get on top. The concession of two goals and a point in the first 10 minutes by the Garrycastle boys gave Athlone a lead which they never lost. The Garrycastle heads dropped and in spite of their best efforts they could never regain the momentum they had in the first half. Their only point in the half was a Darragh Glennon free in the 48th minute.
Team: James Derwin, Riain Hayden, Daniel Stankard, Jack Dowling, Rory O'Connor, Oisin Donoghue, Breen Redmond, Darragh Glennon, Jack Tucker, Senan Nugent, Dylan Nicholson, Fionn Murphy, Ryan Kilmurray, Darragh Clyne, Jack Kilmurray.

Garrycastle 3-05, St. Lomans Mullingar 1-08
Garrycastle won their first underage Division 1 title since 1999 when they beat St. Lomans in a windy Rochfortbridge on Saturday. This was a win dug out by a combination of dogged determination as well as good football.
Playing against the wind in the first half our lads found the going very tough with Lomans scoring two points, both of which could have been goals. With their backs to the wall the Garrycastle lads defended strongly and were successful until a long ball from Lomans midfield caused confusion in the defence and led to a soft goal being conceded. Garrycastles attempts to get up field were overturned mainly because of lack of support for the player in possession.
Late in the half with 9 points between the sides, on one of Garrycastles attacks James McHugh put a very clever ball into space behind the defence which Níadh Shine ran on to. With only the goalie to beat he was pulled down and the penalty awarded was put away expertly by James McHugh. A further Lomans point left the halftime score at 1-7 to 1-0.
Soon after the restart Andrew Henson gained possession about 50 metres from goal and set off, beating a number of the St. Lomans players before crashing the ball to the net. A Níadh Shine point from a difficult free left 3 points between them. Scores were hard to come by, with two James McHugh frees and one St. Lomans point, the only scores. An Oisin Mulvihill shot came off the butt of the post and was cleared. Midway through the half with Lomans coming more into the game one of their shots came off the post and rebounded across the goal, eluding a loose forward and dribbling wide.
Almost immediately after this let off a James McHugh shot for goal went narrowly wide at the far post. With the clock running down and two points between the sides, a long ball found James McHugh who used his close-up skills to steer it to the net and give the lead to Garrycastle for the first time in the game. With confidence up, Aaron Keegan and Christopher Joyce added two great points. St. Lomans came back again and with five minutes of injury time gone. won a free from which they tried blasting operations for a goal, but the kick was blocked and cleared, and the sound of the final whistle was greeted by huge cheers from the large Garrycastle support.
The cup was presented to Garrycastle captain, Andrew Henson, after the match who thanked the team’s mentors, players and also St Loman’s for the hard fought game.

The under-15 boys pulled off a great win over Caulry in the rescheduled division 2 championship final played in Athlone in front of a fine crowd. This was a smashing game of football played in a great spirit by both teams. This young Garrycastle team came into the game as underdogs, having lost to Caulry in an earlier round. They started nervously but played their way into the game and led early on. However, Caulry had a purple patch midway through the half and saw them take the lead. But a determined Garrycastle regained the initiative and led by a point at halftime, 2-6 to 1-8, the goals coming from Andrew Henson and Niadh Shine.
The early stages of the second half saw Garrycastle increase their lead to 4 points when Andrew Henson cut through the Caulry defence to find the net for the second time. The 7 point lead didn't last as Caulry fought back and with the help of a goal reduced the lead to 3. However, Garrycastle controlled possession and after a number of misses increased the lead to 4, a brilliant free off the ground from 45 metres by Niadh Shine. Another Caulry point brought it back to a one score game but in spite of constant Garrycastle pressure they failed to make the game secure but the final whistle arrived bringing great celebration by the large Garrycastle crowd present . This was a well deserved win by a team who have made tremendous improvement during the season and showed a great hunger for victory. Their handling, kicking, support play, tackling and ability to find each other was of a high standard. Well done by players and management.

End of year trip 2013 - Paintball!
The Under-16 and Under-14 squads had their end-of-year outing on Saturday (Nov. 2nd), when they decamped to Bray to check if all the evenings playing Call of Duty, Battlefield and Medal of Honour on their Playstations and X-Boxes would translate into advanced tactics in a day-long session of paintball!
Whether their tactics were good or not is open to debate, but it was an extremely happy group who returned to Garrycastle having expended huge amounts of ammunition, and effort, during the day.

After such a huge outlay of effort, it was only fitting that the entire group was treated to food in Supermacs in Moate on the way home.
