The finals of this years Jim McHugh Memorial Tournament were held in Garrycastle on Sunday evening, October 25th.

In the Plate final, Shandonagh triumphed over St. Marys Rochfortbridge, after a very close match, which saw the Shandonagh team adapt better to the strong swirling wind. The plate was presented to the Shandonagh captain Daniel Scahill by Garrycastle club co-founder, Seamus Nugent. The player-of-the-match award went to Donal Mulvihill, also from Shandonagh.

The Shield final was very much a game of two halves. Playing with the strong wind in the first half, Tubber went in at half-time with a seemingly unassailable lead. However, Athlone were a different team in the second half, and brought the game back to a couple of points. The last five minutes saw Tubber mount a desperate rearguard defence, and they, and the crossbar, denied Athlone a winning score. Tubber emerged victorious, and for the Tubber captain Ava Cornally, it was a double celebration, as she also took the player-of-the-match award, presented by Tom McHugh.

In the Cup final, Moate All-Whites were determined to repeat their win of two years ago, and playing with the wind got a great start with an early goal. Caulry battled hard to stay in the game, limiting the Moate chances, and at half time, it looked as if the momentum would switch to Caulry. In the second half, however, Caulry kicked too many wides when they had possession, and the Moate lads were more clinical in their finishing, and took a deserved win. Tom McHugh presented the Jim McHugh memorial cup to the Moate All-Whites captain, Harry Niall, who lifted to the cup to great cheers from his teammates. Harry received the player-of-the-match trophy also after a great individual display.

Overall, a great night of football was provided by all 6 teams who took part, and all the teams, players and mentors, are commended for playing their parts in a great sporting occasion.

Huge thanks as always to Mark Redmond for the excellent organisation of the overall tournament; everything runs so smoothly because of all the planning and effort he puts in beforehand.

Thanks also to the referees, linesmen, umpires, pitch co-ordinators, shop helpers, and everyone else who helped out in any way on the day.

The finals of this years Jim McHugh Memorial Tournament were held in Garrycastle on Saturday evening, October 25th.

In the Plate final, Millmore Gaels emerged victorious after a great tussle with St. Malachys/Ballinagore. The plate was presented to captain Ryan Greenwood by Garrycastle senior player Doron Harte. The man-of-the-match was Ben McGurran, also from Millmore Gaels.

The Shield final was won by Caulry, who overcame Garrycastle in the final. The Shield was presented to the winning captain, Luke Buckley, by Mrs. Nuala McHugh, widow of the late Jim McHugh, in whose honour the tournament is held. The Man-of-the-match award was presented to Roan Sweeney, from the Caulry club, by Jim McHugh jnr., son of the late Jim McHugh,

In the Cup final, Tang dethroned last years champions, Moate All-Whites, after an excellent game of football as conditions worsened, and the rain came down heavily. It was a double celebration for the captain of the Tang team, Philip Temple, as not alone did he get to raise the Jim McHugh Memorial Cup, presented by Mrs. Nuala McHugh, but also took the man-of-the-match award, presented by Garrycastle senior player Tom McHugh, also a son of the late Jim McHugh.
