All County League (Division 7A) Play Off [7 December 2012]
GARRYCASTLE 3-18, TANG 0-5
Garrycastle advanced to the Division 7 final, where they play Mullingar Shamrocks, with a win over a depleted Tang side in Tang last Sunday afternoon. The game was switched to Tang as the Garrycastle pitch was unplayable. Garrycastle took some time to settle, even with superior numbers as Tang started the game with just 13 players. Garrycastle took the lead with a point from Sean Brennan, but Tang levelled matters with a good point. The home side nearly took the lead when a promising move opened up the Garrycastle defence but the shot for goal was just wide of the mark. This seemed to jolt Garrycastle into life and a succession of points from Noel Galvin, Paul Mulvihill, Sean Brennan and Ciaran O’Neill pushed them into a comfortable lead. Further points from Paul Mulvihill and Peadar Mulvihill had established a lead of 0-11 to 0-1 at the break.
On the resumption Sean Brennan pointed from a 45 but Tang had their best spell with two quick points of their own. The game’s first goal came to Garrycastle courtesy of Enda Keena in the 38th minute. Garrycastle goalkeeper, Colman Gantley, saved a penalty and had to repeat his heroics a couple of minutes later when saving yet another penalty award. Garrycastle picked off some more points and grabbed a second goal in the 51st minute from Sean Brennan. Ciaran O’Neill raised a green flag from a penalty awarded for a foul on Gary Mullery. The final score 3-18 to -0-5.
It is difficult to judge where this performance leaves this side, as Tang only had the requisite numbers at the start of the second period. Mullingar Shamrocks will prove stiffer opposition in the Division 7 final in a couple of weeks.
GARRYCASTLE: Colman Gantley, Gary Mullery, Conor Harrington, Eoin Mooney, Neil Rattigan, Sean Carey, Frank Doolan, Ciaran O’Neill (1-1, 1-0 pen), Sean Brennan (1-5, 0-1 45mt), Padraig Cosgrove, Peadar Mulvihill (0-1), Brian Carty (0-1), Paul Mulvihill (0-3), Noel Galvin (0-6) and Enda Keena (1-1).

All County League (Division 3) [25 November 2012]
GARRYCASTLE 2-6, BALLYMORE 1-7
This hard-earned win over the home team in Ballymore last Sunday morning effectively assures Garrycastle of the Division 3 title, and promotion to Division 2 for next season. Garrycastle have won all eight games played to date and are level on 16 points with Ballynacargy, who have completed their programme of games. Garrycastle have one game left to play – away to Multyfarnham – but because they won the head-to-head with Ballynacargy they will finish on top regardless of the result against Multyfarnham. This is a notable achievement for Aidan Dunning’s team who have now gone from Division 4 to Division 2 in two years.
Both sides shown plenty of rustiness in the first half but Garrycastle were sharper in front of goal. Conor Cosgrove again showed his accuracy from play and frees while Eoin Monaghan’s well-taken goal gave his team a lead of 1-5 to 0-1 at half time. When Monaghan notched his second goal early in the second half Garrycastle seemed to think the game was over, but the home team took control in the final quarter. When they scored a goal with eight minutes left the gap was down to three points. A neat Conor Cosgrove point eased the tension and two points from Ballymore in the closing minutes weren’t enough to deny Garrycastle.
GARRYCASTLE: Shane O’Connell, Gary Mullery, Sean Brennan, John O’Shaughnessy, Anthony Larkin, Ciaran O’Neill, Robbie Fox, Aidan Browne, Matthew Guiheen, Neill Rattigan, Conor Cosgrove (0-5, 3 frees), Peadar Mulvihill, Noel Galvin (captain), James Duignan, Eoin Monaghan (2-1).
Sub: Enda Keena.
Under 21 Football Championship (15 a side) [16 November 2012]
CAULRY 2-07, GARRYCASTLE 1-06
Due to difficulties in securing a suitable venue with floodlights, this game was played in Tubber last Friday night where, despite continuous rain, the pitch held up well and two committed teams served up an entertaining contest. With a big contingent of their Intermediate squad available, Caulry went into this game as favourites but Garrycastle had the better of the opening quarter. Their defence soaked up anything Caulry threw at them and a well-taken goal by Enda Keena kept them in front for most of the half. However, Caulry got through for a goal after 25 minutes and went in at the break leading by 2-3 to 1-2. Garrycastle needed a positive start to the second half but instead Caulry scored a quick point and took a giant step towards victory when they added their second goal. Trailing by eight points, Garrycastle were in serious trouble but continued to battle and three inspirational points from play by Eoin Monaghan and Sean Brennan (2) put them back in contention. A very good save by Caulry’s goalkeeper denied Garrycastle the goal that would really have ignited their challenge and the winners stretched their lead with two good points. Garrycastle refused to throw in the towel and points from Alex Gardiner (free) and a beauty from Michael Monaghan ensured an anxious few closing minutes for Caulry.
This young Garrycastle team can take positives from their two championship games this year. Seven minors were involved last Friday, including three 17 year olds, and with all but two players young enough for next year they can look forward to another good campaign in 2013.
GARRYCASTLE: Michael Fagan, Sean Carey, Jack Donohue, Gary Mullery, Cian White, Gary McCallon, David Broughan, Sean Brennan (Captain, 0-3), Justin Barrett, Barry Ruane, Alex Gardiner (0-1, free), Michael Monaghan (0-1), Paul Gunning (0-1), Eoin Monaghan (0-1), Enda Keena (1-0).
Subs: Ronan Donohue (for Gunning); Cormac Dickson (for Broughan).
Under 21 Championship (15 a side) [3 November 2012]
GARRYCASTLE 4-10, ST. MALACHYS/BALLINAGORE 0-7
Garrycastle under 21s had a very successful outing against St Malachys/Ballinagore on Saturday night last winning on a scoreline of 4-10 to 0-7. This young Garrycastle team went into the game as underdogs against a club which had considerable success at minor over the last few years. However the Garrycastle lads showed great appetite from the start and took the game to their opponents despite playing against a strong wind. An early Barry Ruane goal gave Garrycastle the lead which they never relinquished. When in possession the Garrycastle forwards had the Malachy's defence at sixes and sevens. Good use of the ball with defence splitting passes led to further goals for Eoin Monaghan (2) and Alex Gardiner (1). At this stage Enda Keena was proving a very effective link man being involved in almost every attack. At the other end the attacks were repelled by disciplined defence by Sean Carey, Cian White, David Brougham, Lee McNamara, Gary McCallon and Gary Mullery. A couple of great saves by Michael Fagan in goals at vital times ensured that Garrycastle led by 4-2 to 0-5 at half time. On the resumption some early pressure led to a point for the visitors. However, Justin Barrett and Sean Brennan began to dominate the midfield exchanges again and the forwards tacked on points with Michael Monaghan, Paul Gunning, Enda Keena, Eoin Monaghan and Alex Gardiner getting on the scoreboard. Early in the half the crossbar prevented Eoin Monaghan from getting his 3rd goal. This was a great team performance from all 16 players who took part (Cormac Dixon replaced Lee McNamara at half time). They now play Caulry in the next round.
GARRYCASTLE: Michael Fagan, Sean Carey, Cian White, Gary Mullery David Brougham, Gary McCallon, Lee McNamara, Justin Barrett, Sean Brennan (Capt), Barry Ruane, Alex Gardiner, Michael Monaghan, Paul Gunning, Eoin Monaghan, Enda Keena.
Sub Cormac Dixon for Lee McNamara.
WESTMEATH SENIOR FOOTBALL FINAL REPLAY 2012 [28 October 2012]
MULLINGAR SHAMROCKS 0-12, GARRYCASTLE 1-8
Garrycastle relinquished their Westmeath senior title when going down by the narrowest of margins in Sunday’s replay of the 2012 final.
Mullingar Shamrocks made the better start and registered two points within the opening 2 minutes, the opening from play and the second from a free. It was taking Garrycastle some time to settle and Dessie Dolan got them off the mark with a point from a free in the 7th minute. Garrycastle began to dominate possession, with Aidan Browne winning most of the midfield battles, and this provided ample opportunities to deliver good ball to the forwards. A pointed free from Conor Cosgrove was added to by Dessie Dolan, also from a free. Dessie then added a point from play before Garrycastle grabbed an important goal I mid way into the half. A good attacking move carved open the Mullingar Shamrocks defence and James Dolan was put through on goal and he calmly shot past Ronan Tyrrell to put his side 1-4 to 0-2 ahead. Mullingar Shamrocks responded well to this set back with a point in their next attack. Garrycastle captain, Patrick Mulvihill, pointed to restore his side’s 5 point advantage. The sides exchanged points, the Garrycastle score coming from Doron Harte. Mullingar Shamrocks had the final score f the half, a point from a close in free to leave it 1-6 to 0-6 in Garrycastle’s favour at the break.
Conor Cosgrove pointed a close range free in the opening period of the second half to push his side further ahead. However, it proved to be a rare score for the defending champions, as Mullingar Shamrocks began to dictate the play. Points from Sean Daly and substitute, Darragh Ryan, reduced the gap by the 44th minute. A wonderful Garrycastle move saw Matthew Guiheen put clear on goal, however he pulled his shot for goal wide of the left hand post. This was as things transpired an important moment in the game. Mullingar Shamrocks began to chip away at the Garrycastle lead and a pointed free followed by one from play by Killian Daly had the sides level in the 55th minute. Shamrocks hit the front in the first minute of the three minutes of added time announced, from a free which was needlessly conceded by the Garrycastle defence. They took a giant stride to the championship soon after when Sean Daly pointed from play. Garrycastle attacked and a foul on Conor Cosgrove saw Dessie Dolan shoot for goal, but his effort was deflected up and over the bar by the massed Shamrocks defence. There was time for one more play, but Shamrocks gained possession and Damien Maher’s final whistle signalled new county champions in Mullingar Shamrocks.
Congratulations to Mullingar Shamrocks and everyone in Garrycastle hope they can go on and put in a strong push for provincial honours.
Best for Garrycastle were Enda Mulvihill, Karl Henson, Aidan Browne, Matthew Guiheen, Dessie Dolan and James Dolan.
GARRYCASTLE: Cathal Mullin, Mark McCallon, John Gaffey, Gary McCallon, Doron Harte (0-1), Enda Mulvihill, Karl Henson, Aidan Browne, Matthew Guiheen, Paul Dillon, Patrick Mulvihill (Capt, 0-1), Eoin Monaghan, Conor Cosgrove (0-2, 2f), James Dolan (1-0) and Dessie Dolan (0-4, 3f).

Westmeath Senior Football Final 2012 [21 October 2012]
GARRYCASTLE 3-9, MULLINGAR SHAMROCKS 3-9
For the second year running Garrycastle and Mullingar Shamrocks played out a draw in the senior football final. The replay will be in Cusack Park next Sunday at 2.30pm.
Mullingar Shamrocks had the first score, a point from Donal O’Donoghue in the 4th minute. Points, both of which were from play, by James Dolan pushed Garrycastle into the lead by the 6th minute. A point from Paul Dillon was followed by a point by Conor Cosgrove from a 45. Shamrocks responded with a point in the 16th minute. Conor Cosgrove pointed a close range free and in the next minute there was a goal opportunity for both sides. Shamrocks hit the Garrycastle upright and when the ball was cleared, Garrycastle set up an attack which saw Dessie Dolan first a pass to his cousin James who flicked the ball to the net in the 21st minute. Conor Cosgrove added yet another point from a free. Shamrocks responded with a point also from a free and then had a goal to leave just 3 points between the sides as the half time break neared. Conor Cosgrove grabbed a goal for his side when a high ball into the goalmouth was not cleared but Shamrocks responded to this setback with a point in the 29th minute. There was enough time for Enda Mulvihill to break forward from centre back and a scoring opportunity appeared to go but he regained possession and fisted a point in the 1st minute of added time. The half time score 2-7 to 1-4 in Garrycastle’s favour.
Alan Fox replaced his brother Robbie at half time. Garrycastle’s cause was given a significant boost within 30 seconds of the restart when a pass from Dessie Dolan led to a goalmouth scramble and Conor Cosgrove was on hand to score his second and Garrycastle’s third goal of the game. Shamrocks responded with a pointed free and their cause was given a lift with a goal in the 33rd minute. James Dolan had his third point of the game in reply but Shamrocks in turn responded with a point from play. A further point by Conor Cosgrove from a free put Garrycastle 3-9 to 2-6 ahead with 18 minutes remaining. The champion failed to register any more scores during this period, including some 2 minutes of added time. Shamrocks had a third goal in the 46th minute when Micheal Curley struck a powerful shot past Sean Brennan. It was game on and two further points came in quick succession to leave the margin down to a point with about 12 minutes of play left. Shamrocks hit over the equaliser in the 56th minute. Both sides had opportunities to lead, but it was Shamrocks who had the better chances and will be disappointed not to have converted at least one of them. Sean Carroll’s whistle after two minutes of added time signalled a draw yet again between the sides.
Mixed emotions for Garrycastle, Disappointment at not finishing out the game when holding a 9 point lead, but relief that some of the chances for Shamrocks at the end were not on target. So back to Cusack Park next Sunday and Garrycastle will hope that they can repeat their replay win of 2011 this year.
Best for Garrycastle were John Gaffey, Enda Mulvihill, Aidan Browne, Patrick Mulvihill, Conor Cosgrove and James Dolan. Dessie Dolan was clearly carrying an injury but was very influential during his time on the pitch.
GARRYCASTLE: Sean Brennan, Mark McCallon, John Gaffey, Gary McCallon, Robbie Fox, Enda Mulvihill (0-1), Doron Harte, Justin Barrett, Aidan Browne, Paul Dillon (0-1), Patrick Mulvihill (Capt), Dessie Dolan, Conor Cosgrove (2-4, 0-1 45m, 0-3f), James Duignan and James Dolan (1-3).
SUBS: Alan Fox for R Fox (Half time); Eoin Monaghan for D Dolan (38 min); Matthew Guiheen for D Duignan (41 min); Seanie O’Donoghue for P Dillon (48 min) and David O’Shaughnessy for J Barrett (58 min).
Junior B Championship [14 October 2012]
BALLYMORE 0-13, GARRYCASTLE 0-10
Garrycastle lost out in this year’s Junior B Championship game against the home side in Ballymore last Sunday afternoon.
It was disappointing that we only had 15 players available, but credit to those who togged out for giving everything to try and advance in the championship.
Paul Gunning got the scoring up and running with a good point for Garrycastle in the 3rd minute. Ballymore hit back with points in quick succession to lead by a point in the 7th minute. Alex Gardiner levelled matters with a pointed free following a foul on Paul Gunning. Two points for the home side pushed them in front again before Paul Mulvihill hit over a good point. Alex Gardiner then levelled matters with a point from play in the 14th minute. The sides exchanged points, with the Garrycastle score coming from an Alex Gardiner free. Ballymore lead again with a point from play before Alex Gardiner showed his prowess from a placed ball to again level the score at 0-5 each. Ballymore finished the half stronger and added two points, the first from a free, before Declan Nugent’s whistle signalled the half time break. The score was 0-8 to 0-6 in Ballymore’s favour.
The home side stretched their lead with a point right on the resumption. Alex Gardiner was again accurate from a free for Garrycastle. Two pointed frees for the home side increased their lead before Alex Gardiner slotted over yet another free for Garrycastle. Ballymore had a pointed free and followed up with one from play to lead by 0-13 to 0-8 with just 10 minutes remaining. Garrycastel rallied strongly. A close range free saw Alex Gardiner go for goal, however his shot was saved but Paul Mulvihill picked up possession and pointed. A couple of scoring opportunities were passed up by Garrycastle before Alex Gardiner pointed yet another free with just two minutes remaining. Sean Carey had an opening but his shot flew wide of the goal. The final score was 0-13 to 0-10 for Ballymore.
It was obvious that this side had not played together for nearly 3 months. The lack of numbers also meant that it was not possible to bring some fresh legs later in the game when players tired on the heavy ground. There were good performances from Michael Fagan in goal, Shane Carr, Noel Galvin and Peadar Mulvihill in defence. Johnny McGuire and Conor Molloy worked had in the centre. The attack was well served by Alex Gardiner, Paul Gunning and Paul Mulvihill.
GARRYCASTLE: Michael Fagan, Gary Mullery, Anthony Larkin, Shane Carr, Sean Carey, Noel Galvin, Peadar Mulvihill, Conor Molloy, Johnny McGuire, Enda Keena, Alex Gardiner (0-7, 0-6f), Emmet Keena, Paul Gunning (0-1), Padraig Cosgrove and Paul Mulvihill (0-2).
Minor Football Championship (Division 2) [7 October 2012]
Maryland/Tang 0-10, Garrycastle 0-6
The minors bowed out of this years championship on a scoreline of 10 points to 6 against Maryland/Tang in Tubberclare last Sunday morning. On a fine morning for football, Maryland/Tang were the quicker to settle and Garrycastle never got going. It was a disappointing display from the team after having played so well in previous games. On the day Maryland/Tang deserved their victory and congratulations to them. A feature of the second half was the many dropped balls and misplaced passes which will be a huge source of frustration for manager Stephen McGuire. All in all, it should be a learning curve to these young players and we must thank the management team of Stephen McGuire, Gerry Duignan and Ken Keenaghan for their efforts during the year.
All County Football League (Division 1) [6 October 2012]
GARRYCASTLE 3-10, TANG 0-7
Garrycastle kept their quest for Division 1 league honours on track with a well merited win over Tang in Tang last Saturday evening. The game was switched from Garrycastle as the pitch there was unplayable.
It was evident in the early exchanges that Garrycastle had not played for almost 3 weeks as they struggled to put any decent passages of play together. Tang had the lead with a point in the 3rd minute but Garrycastle responded with pointed frees from Conor Cosgrove to lead by the 9th minute. The sides exchanged points, with the Garrycastle scores coming from James Duignan and Neil Rattigan from play to be level on 0-4 each by the 19th minute. Garrycastle grabbed a decisive lead with a couple of goals within a two minute spell, the first coming via the fist of Conor Cosgrove who was on the end of a high delivery into the Tang goalmouth and the second from Patrick Mulvihill after good approach play. Another point from Eoin Monaghan was replied to by a point for Tang in first half injury timer to leave the scoreline 2-5 to 0-5 at the break in Garrycastle’s favour.
Tang had a point from a free shortly after the resumption but a third Garrycastle goal in the 34th minute from Eoin Monaghan all but settled the issue. Further points from Eoin Monaghan and Robbie Fox extended their lead. Tang had a point from a free in the 41st minute. Points from Garrycastle substitutes, Ciaran O’Neill and two from James Dolan saw out the match on a scoreline of 3-10 to 0-7.
There were good displays from Enda Mulvihill and Matthew Guiheen in defence. David O’Shaughnessy and Aidan Browne held sway in the centre. Patrick Mulvihill and Eoin Monaghan caught the eye in attack. Garrycastle were missing a number of regulars, but on this display they will struggle to win the county final in two weeks. Mullingar Shamrocks and Garrycastle have agreed to double up for the league in their county final fixture, so the outcome of that game could see Garrycastle clinch the division 1 title.
GARRYCASTLE: Cathal Mullin, Alan Fox, Enda Mulvihill, Gary McCallon, Matthew Guiheen, Mark McCallon, Robbie Fox (0-1), Aidan Browne, David O’Shaughnessy, Paul Dillon, Patrick Mulvihill (1-0), Neil Rattigan (0-1), Conor Cosgrove (1-2, 0-2f), James Duignan (0-1)and Eoin Monaghan (1-2).
SUBS: Ciaran O’Neill (0-1) for E Monaghan (47 min); Seanie O’Donoghue for P Dillon (47 min); Johnny McGuire for N Rattigan (47 min); James Dolan (0-2) for C Cosgrove (inj, 50 min) and Anthony Larkin for R Fox (52 min).
Fé 16 Football League Championships (Division 2) [26 September 2012]
Garrycastle 0-10 Tubberclair 1-13
Garrycastle exited the Under-16 division 2 championship at the semi-final stage in Tubberclair on Wednesday evening. On a windy evening, Tubberclair got off to a good start with an early point from a free, before Garrycastle settled down and opened their account with a well taken point from Ken Dolan from play. Within minutes, Garrycastle extended their lead with a point from Cathal Mannion (following a short free from Ken), and went further ahead with another point from Cian Hayden, (following another shot free from Ken). Tubberclair responded with another point from a free, but this was cancelled out almost immediately by a point from the impressive Evan Dalton, following a well worked move from the back line. Again Tubberclair responded and drew level, with a brace of points, one from a close-in free. A move started from Frank Farrell, playing excellently at center half-back, then ended with Ken taking a point. Approaching half time both teams exchanged points, Garrycastles coming from play by Evan, but were also guilty of some poor shooting, with Garrycastle having 3 wides in the last 5 minutes of the half. However, at half-time, things looked promising for Garrycastle, as they led on a scoreline of 0-6 to 0-5.
As the second half started, and playing with the wind, Garrycastle would have expected to push on, but it was not to be. Within moments of the resumption, Tubberclair had levelled the scores with a free, before taking the lead with a point from play. Then, with Garrycastle still to find their rhythm in the second half, Tubberclair broke through for a strike on goal, drawing an excellent save from Eoin Slevin, but the Tubberclair forwards were faster to react to the breaking ball and slotted home the rebound. Garrycastle tried to respond, and Evan stroked over a nice point, but Tubberclair were now in charge and tacked on 3 unanswered points, (2 from frees), to leave themselves firmly in the driving seat. Points from Evan (from a free) and Ken narrowed the gap to four points before the turning point of the game from a Garrycastle viewpoint, as Ken got in behind the Tubberclair defence and unleashed a blistering shot for goal, only to see it brilliantly stopped by the Tubberclair goalkeeper. The ball was rapidly moved downfield, and Tubberclair tapped over a point to extend their lead. Tubberclair pushed on now, and added two further points from frees, while Garrycastle could only muster one final score, a pointed free from Ken.
So, just as in 2011, Garrycastle exit the Fé 16 championships at the semi-final stage. Good performances on the night from Frank Farrell and Sean Kilgarriff at the back, Evan Dalton in midfield, and Cathal Mannion in the forwards. Unfortunately, the Garrycastle midfield never really got into this game, and this, coupled with the concession of too many scoreable frees, (8 in total), put the game out of reach.
Team: Eoin Slevin, Eric McCormack, Ben Kennedy, Adam Keena, Sean Kilgarriff, Frank Farrell, Bill Kelly, Cian Hayden (0-1), Eric Kearney, Shane McEnery, Evan Dalton (0-4), Darragh McCormack, Cathal Mannion (0-1), Liam Leahy, Kenneth Dolan (0-4).
Subs: Brian Leahy for Shane, Eoin Duignan for Darragh.
Minor Football Championship (Division 2) [22 September 2012]
Garrycastle 2-10, St. Mary’s/Rochfortbridge 0-5
Garrycastle minor team had a hard earned victory over a determined St.Mary’s team in the quarter-final on the Division 2 Minor championship in Rochfortbridge on Saturday last. Garrycastle had to play against the strong breeze in the first half and their defence had to be at their best to cope with the constant pressure that St. Mary’s were putting them under. Garrycastle managed to get on the score board when Frank Farrell popped up from corner back to score a fine point. Further points from Paul Gunning and two from Michael Monaghan left the half-time score Garrycastle 0-4 to St. Mary’s 0-0.
Garrycastle started well early in the second half and added further points from Justin Barrett, Paul Gunning and Michael Monaghan. St. Mary’s scored a few fine points from play to bring them back into contention and only a great reflex save from Michael Fagan at his near post helped to prevent St. Mary’s getting backed into the game. Garrycastle settled back into the game and some great points from Paul Gunning and Michael Monaghan helped extend their lead further.
Garrycastle introduced a number of substitutes late on in the game and a superb goal from Conor McKiernan knocked the heart out of the St. Mary’s team and a further well taken goal from Emmett Brennan made sure Garrycastle were going to be victorious on the day.
The final score was Garrycastle 2-10 St.Mary’s/Rochfordbridge 0-5.
Garrycastle play the winners of Maryland /Tang or Ballinacarrigy in the Division 2 semi-final.
Garrycastle team and mentors can take heart from this performance but they will learn that any lapses in concentration will be punished if they are to go further in the competition.
GARRYCASTLE: Michael Fagan, Sean Gunning, Cian White, Frank Farrell (0-1), Cian Hayden, Ronan Donohue, Cormac Dickson, Justin Barrett (0-1), Mark Curly, Michael Monaghan (0-4), Terry Rushe, Paul Gunning (0-4), Kenneth Dolan, Evan Dalton, Lee McNamara, Emmett Brennan (1-0), Conor McKiernan (1-0), Fergal McKiernan, Hugh Moody, Jack McGann and Donal Byrne.
All County Football League (Division 3) [23 September 2012]
GARRYCASTLE 3-13, TYRRELLSPASS 3-5
Garrycastle continued their push for division 3 league honours with a well merited win in Tyrrellspass last Sunday morning. Garrycastle made a bright start and had registered 3 points within the first 11 minutes with their scores coming from Eoin Monaghan, Conor Cosgrove and Noel Galvin. However, the home side hit back strongly and a slick attack in the 15th minute raised a green flag to level matters. The sides exchanged points, with the home side converting a free and Eoin Monaghan pointing from play. Garrycastle went into the lead again with a well taken point from Ciaran O’Neill in the 19th minute only for Tyrrellspass to jump ahead with a second goal in the 21st minute. It got better for the home side this was followed-up with a point to put them into a strong lead as the half time break approached. Points from James Duignan and Ciaran O’Neill in the final minute of the half reduced the margin to two points at the break on a scoreline of 2-3 to 0-7.
Garrycastle again made the better start on the resumption of play and a goal from James Duignan within the first minute put them into a lead they would never relinquish. Points from Conor Cosgrove and one from a free by James Duignan extended their advantage. A point from substitute, Alex Gardiner at the mid point of the second half had his side four points to the good. Garrycastle goalkeeper, Padraig Cosgrove, made an important save to deny Tyrrellspass a goal and Eoin Monaghan followed up with a point from play. A second goal by James Duignan put his side into a good lead and a good Garrycastle attack saw Alex Gardiner shoot for goal, however, his effort was well saved but Eoin Monaghan was on hand to put the rebound into the net. Tyrrellspass had their first score of the second half in the 50th minute but Matthew Guiheen replied for Garrycastle with a good point after a surging run. The home side had a goal after a good attack. Alex Gardiner pointed for Garrycastle from a 45 and Tyrrellspass had the last score, a point from a free, in the 57th minute.
Garrycastle will be happy with the win but did not play too well in the first half. The second half was better and yielded some good scores. Gary McCallon, Robbie Fox and John O’Shaughnessy were best in defence. Aidan Browne had a fine game and was well supported by Matthew Guiheen. James Duignan, Ciaran O’Neil and Eoin Monaghan as well as Alex Gardiner, when introduced, impressed in attack.GARRYCASTLE: Padraig Cosgove, Gary Mullery, Alan Fox, Gary McCallon, Robbie Fox, John O’Shaughnessy, Anthony Larkin, Aidan Browne, Matthew Guiheen (0-1), Peadar Mulvihill, James Duignan (2-2, 0-1f), Ciaran O’Neill (0-2), Eoin Monaghan (103), Conor Cosgrove (0-2) and Noel Galvin (0-1).
SUBS: Neil Rattigan for G Mullery (inj, 25 min); Alex Gardiner (0-2, 0-1 45m) for Peadar Mulvihill (41 min); Sean Carey for A Larkin (52 min) and Paul Mulvihill for N Galvin (55 min).
Intermediate Relegation Play-Off [15 September 2012]
SHANDONAGH 1-13, GARRYCASTLE 2-7 (after extra time)
A brave and committed performance by Garrycastle in Ballymore last Saturday wasn’t enough to retain their Intermediate status. Right from the start Garrycastle took the game to their physically stronger opponents and two well-taken goals by Alex Gardiner (both set up by Padraig Cosgrove) gave them a lead of 2-2 to 0-4 at half time. With the wind in their favour Shandonagh had most of the second half play, aided by the fact that Garrycastle had been reduced to 14 men just before half time. Garrycastle’s defence was resolute and kept their team in front until the last few minutes. Eventually Shandonagh took the lead but a magnificent pointed free from 45 metres by Alex Gardiner brought the game to extra time. The sides were still deadlocked in extra time until Shandonagh scored the winning goal with two minutes left, as darkness descended. Even then Garrycastle didn’t give up and almost got the equaliser in the final seconds.
On an evening when every Garrycastle player was heroic there were particularly outstanding displays from Gary Mullery, Conor Harrington, John Murphy, Donovan Hermbusche, Matthew Guiheen, Noel Galvin and Alex Gardiner.
GARRYCASTLE: Shane O’Connell, Gary Mullery, Conor Harrington, John Murphy, Sean Carey, Donovan Hermbusche, Jack Donohue, Anthony Larkin, Matthew Guiheen (0-1), Brian Carty, Peadar Mulvihill, Alex Gardiner (2-4), Noel Galvin, Padraig Cosgrove, Paul Mulvihill (0-1).

Senior Football Championship (Semi-Final) [16 September 2012]
Garrycastle 4-10, Maryland 0-12
Two goals in the closing minutes sealed victory for Garrycastle in the county semi-final in Cusack Park last Sunday. The final winning margin gives a false picture of this game, however. When wind-assisted Maryland got to within a goal of Garrycastle half way through the second half they seemed to have the momentum to press on for victory but in the space of a few minutes two key incidents virtually decided the outcome. Sean Brennan made a superb save following sustained pressure by Maryland and when Eoin Monaghan scored a super goal just afterwards the pattern of the game had changed completely. Maryland, to their credit, kept battling and reduced the leeway to four points before the late goals from Eoin Monaghan and James Dolan gave Garrycastle a flattering ten-point victory. The holders will know that a big improvement will be needed if they are to retain their title. The five week delay until the final gives time to work on several aspects of their game and, crucially, allows injured players a chance to attain full fitness.
PS. A minutes silence was observed before our senior match against Maryland in respect of our late President Jim McHugh.

Fé 16 Football League Championships (Division 2) [13 September 2012]
Garrycastle 3-5, St. Lomans 1-5
Garrycastle had a deserved win over St. Lomans, Mullingar in the quarter finals of this years Division 2 under-16 club football championship in Garrycastle on Thursday evening. A strong swirling wind and intermittent rain made for difficult conditions for playing football, and this was reflected in a low-scoring game. Playing with the wind, St. Lomans started the stronger, and had already clocked up 4 wides, including one from a 45-meter free, before Garrycastle could launch their first attack, with Eric Kearney shooting wide after some good interplay with Cathal Mannion. Further St. Lomans pressure finally yielded some results, with two points on the board sandwiching another good Garrycastle effort from Kenny Dolan which drifted wide of the posts.
As the half progressed, Garrycastle were starting to control the game in midfield, with an exhibition of high catching from Eric, and finally got their reward with a point from Cian Hayden, played in by Mark Duffy from a Kenny Dolan free. An excellent goal from Mark Duffy put Garrycastle into the lead, and as the half came to conclusion, a strong run from Eric Kearney was rewarded with another goal to leave Garrycastle leading at the break on a score line of 2-1 to 0-2.
As the second half began, Garrycastle, now playing with the wind, pushed hard and quickly added to their total with another goal from Eric, and a point from Cathal. As the Garrycastle shooting suffered in the swirling wind, it was St. Lomans who added a point, quickly cancelled by an excellent score from the right hand corner by Cathal. St. Lomans now had perhaps their best patch in the second half, and tapped over two quick points, before being awarded a penalty, after Eoin Slevin was adjudged to have fouled the inrushing St. Lomans player. The penalty was duly scored, to leave Garrycastle ahead by 5 points with 8 minutes to go. More good interplay on the half-forward line teed up a shooting opportunity for Evan Dalton, and he duly tipped over a point to extend the Garrycastle lead.
As the game came to a close, a scuffle on the sideline between a number of players from both teams following a foul on Cathal, resulted in one player from each team being sent to the line. Following a final Garrycastle attack, the referee blew for full time, and Garrycastle march on to the semi-finals on a score line of 3-5 to 1-5. Overall this was a good win, with many excellent performances all around the field. Garrycastle were the stronger team on the evening, and adapted much better to the poor conditions.
Team: Eoin Slevin, Eric McCormack, Ben Kennedy, Adam Keena, Sean Kilgarriff, Frank Farrell, Bill Kelly, Cian Hayden (0-1), Eric Kearney (2-1), Mark Duffy (1-0), Evan Dalton (0-1), Darragh McCormack, Cathal Mannion (0-1), Liam Leahy, Kenneth Dolan (0-1).

Fé 14 Football League Championships Division 4 Final [8 September 2012]
Garrycastle 8-9, Tubberclair 3-6
Garrycastle emerged victorious over near neighbours Tubberclair in the U14 Division 4 final, played in Rosemount on Saturday. On a perfect pitch and on a near perfect day for playing football, an excellent team performance delivered the first under-14 championship for the club in recent years.
Right from the off, Garrycastle opened brightly, and had 3 points on the board from Jack Brody, Cathal Mannion and Brian Ruane, before Tubberclair opened their account with a well taken goal to level the scores. Tubberclair were threating at this stage, and it needed some fine clearances from Bill Kelly and Brian Kenny to steady the Garrycastle team. However, this Garrycastle team has shown in recent months that they do not let setbacks discourage them, and they responded well with further points from Ross Mulvihill following an excellent solo run, and Enda Moran who was buzzing around the half-forward line. Garrycastle were now starting to take over in midfield with Cathal and Oisin Langan to the fore, well supported by Eoin Mulvihill and Joe Carmody winning a lot of ball on the half-back line. A well worked free from Cathal saw Philip Monahan in to open his account with a point, before the same player capitalised on some excellent work from Conor Mulvihill and a fine pass from Oisin to finish the ball to the net. Garrycastle were in the ascendancy and an immediate point from Ross stretched the lead before Oisin, taking a well delivered pass at speed, scored Garrycastle's second goal. Tubberclair responded with a good point from play, but Garrycastle were firing on all cylinders now and in the space of two minutes added two further goals from Enda, the second of which was a bullet which would have graced any game. As the half came to a close, Cathal pointed a close-in free to leave Garrycastle leading at half-time on a score of 4-8 to 1-3.
As the second half began, Tubberclair pushed forward strongly, and now it was the turn of the Garrycastle defence to come to the fore, and they responded, with Bill Kelly, Mark Denby and Brian Leahy in turn making good clearances. Garrycastle were now starting to dominate all over the pitch, and another solo goal from Enda, after Jack Brody had won breaking ball in midfield, effectively finished the game as a contest. Another goal shortly afterwards from Jack Brody, after a move almost spanning the length of the field involving Eoin, Brian Ruane and Enda was a highlight of the game. The extremely warm weather was now starting to have an effect on the energy levels of both teams, and as a little tiredness set in, an unfortunate clash on the field required Brian Ruane to leave the field, greeted by an appreciative round of applause from the sizeable Garrycastle support present. As the game progressed, and as he has done so many times this year, Cathal again showed his high level of fitness and football skill to capitalise on a short pass from Philip to go on a mazy run through the defence before scoring low to the keepers left. With just over 15 minutes to go, Garrycastle started to empty the bench to give all players present some game time, and during the resulting reshuffle, Tubberclair added a point following on from a sideline kick, before scoring a goal with a cheeky chip over Sean Mulvihill's head in the Garrycastle goal as he emerged to block the incoming forward. Tubberclair were encouraged by this to push forward, and a sustained period of pressure earned them a 45-meter free, from which they scored another goal following a goalmouth scramble as the free dropped short. Now Tubberclair pushed forward, but twice in the space of a minute were denied scoring opportunities following two excellent blocks from Brian Leahy. Tubberclair were rewarded with a point from a close-in free, but immediately after this, the tireless Enda Moran kicked over another point, following a well-worked move out of the back line. As Tubberclair pushed forward again, it needed a strong clearance from Caolan Jameson to keep them at bay. As the game entered the last couple of minutes, Tubberclair tacked on another point from a 45-meter free, but this was Garrycastle's day, and with almost the last kick of the game, the ball was worked into Eoghan Kenny who was totally unmarked on the 14-meter line, and he finished coolly to the net to bring the scoring to a close.
Great celebrations from the assembled spectators greeted the final whistle, as Garrycastle won out on a score line of 8-9 to 3-6. Huge cheers erupted as team captain Bill Kelly accepted the Division 4 championship shield from Michael McHugh from the Westmeath minor football board.
Overall, this was a very successful end to a season which has seen huge effort from the players and the management team. All the hard work in the training sessions, challenge matches and championship run paid off handsomely. Great credit is due to the management team of Mick Mannion, Rowan Champ Mulvihill, Paddy Kenny and Jonathan Dunning for all their hard work, dedication and belief in this group of players. The future is surely bright for this group of players and underage football in Garrycastle!
GARRYCASTLE: Sean Mulvihill, Mark Denby, Brian Leahy, Brian Kenny, Joe Carmody, Bill Kelly, Eoin Mulvihill, Oisin Langan (1-0), Cathal Mannion (1-2), Enda Moran (3-2), Ross Mulvihill (0-2), Jack Brody (1-1), Brian Ruane (0-1), Conor Mulvihill, Philip Monahan (1-1).

All County Football League (Division 1) [28 August 2012]
GARRYCASTLE 2-15, CASTLEDALY 0-14
This re-arranged fixture was played before a good size attendance in Garrycastle last Tuesday evening. A draw or better for Castledaly would secure the Division 1 title, whereas only a win for the home side would keep their hopes of securing that title alive.
Playing with the aid of a stiff breeze, Castledaly made the better start and registered their first point with a close range free with just over 2 minutes elapsed. They converted another free, this time from distance, almost immediately to increase their lead. A pointed free from the boot of Conor Cosgrove in the 6th minute got Garrycastle off the mark. Castledaly had a point from play but Paul Dillon responded with a point from play for his side. Castledaly were securing most of the possession and this was reflected in 2 more points to leave them ahead by 3 points by the 13th minute. A further point from a free increased their lead but Garrycastle hit back in style with a goal in the 16th minute as a slick attack put James Duignan into position to raise the green flag. A pointed free from Conor Cosgrove levelled matters in the 20th minute. Castledaly took the initiative again and a pointed free was soon added to with one from play to put them 2 points ahead by the 27th minute. However, Garrycastle finished the half in fine style with a point from Paul Dillon and a second goal, this time from the boot of Eoin Monaghan who was put into space and he cooly planted the ball in the net. Referee Pat Fox's whistle signalled the end of the first half with the home side ahead on a scoreline of 2-4 to 0-8.
Now playing with the aid of the breeze, Garrycastle started the second period in determined fashion and points from Eoin Monaghan, Patrick Mulvihill and Conor Cosgrove, all of which came from play, increased their lead in the opening minutes. A point for Castledaly was replied to with points from Aidan Browne and Paul Dillon. James Duignan and Conor Cosgrove added to the Garrycastle total but Castledaly responded with 2 points, all from open play, to reduce the margin to 5 points by the 46th minute. Conor Cosgrove and substitute, Dessie Dolan, added to the Garrycastel score as the game entered the final 10 minutes. Castledaly fired over 2 quick fire points but Paul Dillon responded for the home side. Castledaly now needed to raise a green flag but they found the Garrycastle defence in no mood to allow that and the final score came to the home side in added time from James Duignan.
This was a good win for Garrycastle and keeps their league title hopes alive. There were good performances from Enda Mulvihill, Jack Donoghue and John Gaffey in defence. Aidan Browne had a fine game in midfield. In attack, the best performances were from Patrick Mulvihill, Eoin Monaghan, Conor Cosgrove, James Duignan and Paul Dillon.
GARRYCASTLE: Cathal Mullin, Alan Fox, Enda Mulvihill, Jack Donoghue, Doron Harte, John Gaffey, Robbie Fox, Aidan Browne (0-1), Justin Barrett, Eoin Monaghan (1-1), Patrick Mulvihill (0-1), Mark McCallon, Conor Cosgrove (0-5, 2f), James Duignan (1-2) and Paul Dillon (0-4).

All County Football League (Division 3) [26 August 2012]
GARRYCASTLE 1-16, BALLYNACARGY 1-13
Both sides came into this game with 100% league records, Ballynacargy with 8 wins from 8 and Garrycastle with 5 from 5. So the winner of this game played in Garrycastle was going to hold a big advantage in the chase for league honours.
Garrycastle had a bright start with a point on the board after 90 seconds when Conor Cosgrove pointed a close range free. However, Ballynacargy settled and began to hold the advantage in the centre. The visitors rattled off four points, all of which came from play, to take a good lead by the 7th minute. A pointed free by James Duignan reduced the margin almost immediately. The sides exchanged points, with Garrycastle’s coming from Robbie Fox, who ventured forward in support. Sean Brennan made a fine save in the Garrycastle goal to prevent a goal or Ballynacargy, but the visitors continued to dominate possession and struck over 3 more points to lead by five points after 20 minutes of play. It got even better for the visitors when a slick attack opened up the Garrycastle defence and a goal ensued in the 22nd minute. Robbie Fox responded by scoring a point for Garrycastle but further points for Ballynacargy in the next couple of attacks stretched the lead to 7 points as the half time break approached. Garrycastle had a decent period of possession and points from Ciaran O’Neill and James Duignan reduced the margin. Alan Daly was very unlucky when his fisted effort bounced back into safety off the visitor’s crossbar. However, the same player had the final score of the period with a point in the first minute of injury time to leave the scoreline 1-10 to 0-7 in Ballynacargy’s favour.
Garrycastle resumed in determined fashion and a goal by James Duignan in the very first minute of the half reduced the gap to just 3 points. Ballynacargy responded with a point to move the lead out to 4 in the 33rd minute. However, that was a signal for Garrycastle’s best period of the game. Aidan Browne began to exert a huge influence in the centre and a good supply to the forwards was to follow. Points from Ciaran O’Neill, Alan Daly and Conor Cosgrove left just 1 point between the sides. A fine point from Aidan Brown levelled matters and Eoin Monaghan had a point in the 42nd minute to put his side into the lead for the first time since the early part of the game. Ballynacargy responded in fine style and levelled matters with their next attack. Two excellent points from Conor Cosgrove put Garrycastle in front again and this was augmented by a pointed free from James Duignan. A point from Aidan Browne put his side four points to the good in the 52nd minute. Both sides were reduced to 14 as the game entered its final period. Ballynacargy pressed forward looking for a goal but resolute defending kept them out. They did have a point in the 59th minute to leave just 3 points between the sides, but try as the may they could not get the scores needed to save the game. The final score was 1-16 to 1-13 in Garrycastle favour.
This was a good win for Garrycastle who put in a great performance in the second period. Sean Brennan was solid in goal and there were fine defensive performances from Jack Donoghue and Robbie Fox. Aidan Browne made a big difference on his introduction in midfield. James Duignan, Conor Cosgrove, Alan Daly and Eoin Monaghan caused a lot of discomfort for the visitor’s defence, particularly in the second period.
GARRYCASTLE: Sean Brennan, Gary Mullery, Alan Fox, Jack Donoghue, Anthony Larkin, John O’Shaughnessy, Robbie Fox (0-2), Justin Barrett, Ciaran O’Neill (0-2), Noel Galvin, James Duignan (1-3, 0-2f), Johnny McGuire, Conor Cosgrove (0-4, 0-1f), Alan Daly (0-2) and Eoin Monaghan(0-1).

GARRYCASTLE 0-12, BUNBROSNA 1-9
A pointed free by James Duignan in the final minute secured a draw for Garrycastle in Ballymore last Saturday. This point was enough to ensure Garrycastle topped their table and qualified directly for the semi-final. However, it is a game that Garrycastle will want to forget, and a dramatic improvement will be needed if they are to make further progress in the championship. From the outset Bunbrosna played with more determination and purpose and, apart from a ten minute spell in the third quarter when they scored four unanswered points, Garrycastle never played with any fluency.
GARRYCASTLE: Sean Brennan, Alan Fox, John Gaffey, Gary McCallon, Ciaran O’Neill, Enda Mulvihill, Justin Barrett, Aidan Browne, David O’Shaughnessy, Johnny McGuire, Doran Harte, James Duignan (0-4, frees), Conor Cosgrove (0-2, 1 free), Paddy Mulvihill (0-5), Paul Dillon (0-1).
SUBS: Gary Dolan for Dillon; James Dolan for O’Neill.
PS: Following the final round of games, Garrycastle and St. Loman's have claimed the first two semi-final spots. In the quarter-finals Maryland will play Castledaly with the winners facing Garrycastle, while Tyrrellspass will play Mullingar Shamrocks with the winners meeting St. Loman's. The dates, time and venues to be confirmed.

TUBBERCLAIR 4-14, GARRYCASTLE 2-5
A brave display by this young Garrycastle team wasn’t enough to prevent Tubberclair from amassing a winning total sufficient to secure a quarter final place in Ballymore last Saturday. Garrycastle started well and matched their opponents throughout the first quarter. A well-taken goal by Padraig Cosgrove following a quickly–taken free by Alan Daly gave Garrycastle the lead but a two goal burst after 20 minutes swung the game in Tubberclair’s favour. Garrycastle continued to battle all through the second half and were rewarded with an Alan Daly goal after a good delivery by Robbie Fox. Another goal from Tubberclair from a penalty kept them in control and their lead was never seriously threatened in the second half.
GARRYCASTLE: Shane O’Connell, Gary Mullery, John Murphy, Jack Donohue, Conor Harrington, Robbie Fox, Sean Carey, Noel Galvin, Conor Molloy, Brian Carty, Padraig Cosgrove (1-0), Alex Gardiner (0-2, frees), Matthew Guiheen (0-1), Paul Mulvihill (0-1).
SUBS: Paul Gunning for Galvin; Michael Monaghan for Gardiner; Donovan Hermbusche for Molloy; Pascal Dillon for Carty.
PS: Following the final round of games, Garrycastle have finished bottom of Group 1 and will play Shandonagh in a relegation match. The dates, time and venues TBC.

CAULRY 3-16 GARRYCASTLE 0-7
Garrycastle’s intermediate team suffered yet another heavy defeat in the penultimate game of the group stages of this year’s championship.
From the very outset Caulry were in control and by the 16th minute had a lead of 6 points to no score. Alex Gardiner finally got Garrycastle on the score-sheet with a point from a free in the 18th minute. The game’s first goal cam soon afterwards, when a high ball into the Garrycastle goalmouth was fisted to the net. The match was all but over as a contest in the 28th minute as Caulry grabbed a second goal when a shot for a point came back off the upright and was finished to the net. Alex Gardiner had a second point for Garrycastle, this one also from a free, as the first half came to a close. The half time sore 2-9 to0-2 in Caulry’s favour.
A succession of points from the leaders stretched the lead and a third goal, this time from a penalty, had the winners ahead by 3-13 to 0-2 by the 39th minute. Garrycastle responded to this in good style and scored three good points, all from play, by Alan Daly, Padraig Cosgrove and Alex Gardiner. Alex was again on target with a pointed free. Shane O’Connell made a good double save to prevent a fourth goal for Caulry. Alan Daly had a chance of a goal for Garrycastle but his shot was well saved by the Caulry net minder. Caulry made a number of changes and added points. Garrycastle’s last score was a point from Alex Gardiner. The final score 3-16 to 0-7.
This was yet another disappointing performance from the Garrycastle side. However, there were some good performances, with Jack Donoghue, Gary Mullery, Robbie Fox the best in the defence. Alex Gardiner was the pick of the forwards, and was well supported by Alan Daly.
GARRYCASTLE: Shane O’Connell, Gary Mullery, John Murphy, Jack Donoghue, Peadar Mulvihill, Robbie Fox, Sean Carey, Conor Molloy, Noel Galvin, Brian Carty, Padraig Cosgrove (0-1), Alex Gardiner (0-5, 3f), Matthew Guiheen, Alan Daly (0-1), and Paul Mulvihill.
SUBS: Pascal Dillon for B Carty (41 min); Michael Monaghan for Paul Mulvihill (41 min; Brian Carty for G Mullery (52 min) and Paul Mulvihill for R Fox (59 min).

GARRYCASTLE 3-13, KILLUCAN 0-8
Garrycastle seniors secured a place in the knock-out stages of the championship with a clear-cut win over Killucan in Moate’s Hogan Park last Friday. With much of South Westmeath subjected to heavy thunderstorms during the afternoon there were fears that this game mightn’t go ahead but amazingly Moate escaped the downpour and their pitch was in great condition. Garrycastle started brightly, reeling off four unanswered points from James Duignan, Paul Dillon, Ciaran O’Neill and a sweetly-struck “45” by Conor Cosgrove. Killucan eventually got off the mark with two points before Paul Dillon put Garrycastle three ahead with his second point. In the space of two minutes Garrycastle put themselves in a winning position with two quick goals. Firstly, Conor Cosgrove’s high kick from distance went all the way to the net as Paddy Mulvihill contested the ball with the full-back and goalkeeper. Within a minute Cosgrove was at the end of a slick passing move and found the net from close range. A pointed free by James Duignan gave Garrycastle a half time lead of 2-6 to 0-4.
A well-worked point by Paul Dillon stretched Garrycastle’s lead after the break. Killucan battled away and managed some good points but David O’Shaughnessy, Neill Rattigan and a Conor Cosgrove free maintained Garrycastle’s comfortable lead. Paddy Mulvihill pointed two frees and in between converted a penalty after Gary Dolan had been fouled in the square. As Garrycastle strove to improve their score difference Gary Dolan rattled the crossbar with a superb effort and Eoin Monaghan completed the scoring in the final minutes.
Garrycastle will be happy to have made the final stages despite having to field under-strength teams in all four games to date. Sean Brennan had another good outing in goals while John Gaffey and the McCallon brothers were excellent in defence. David O’Shaughnessy played solidly throughout in midfield while Paddy Mulvihill led the attack in style with strong support from Conor Cosgrove and Paul Dillon.
GARRYCASTLE: Sean Brennan, Alan Fox, John Gaffey, Gary McCallon, Mark McCallon, Enda Mulvihill, Justin Barrett, Ciaran O’Neill (0-1), David O’Shaughnessy (0-1), Neill Rattigan (0-1), Doran Harte, James Duignan (0-2, 1 free), Conor Cosgrove (2-2 , 1 free, 1 “45”), Paddy Mulvihill (1-2, pen, 2 frees), Paul Dillon (0-3).
SUBS: Eoin Monaghan (0-1) for Duignan; Gary Dolan for Dillon; Aidan Browne for O’Neill; Johnny McGuire for Rattigan and Robbie Shine for Harte.

GARRYCASTLE 2-13, TYRRELLSPASS 2-11
Garrycastle collected two more league points from this trip to Tyrrellspass last Monday. Both sides were short some regulars but the teams served up an entertaining game with the issue in doubt to the end. The first half saw both teams pick off some good points, with both Garrycastle midfielders David O’Shaughnessy and Aidan Browne on the mark early on. Further points from Conor Cosgrove (3), Paddy Mulvihill and Paul Dillon helped Garrycastle to lead by 0-7 to 0-6 at the break.
The third quarter saw Garrycastle extend their lead to three points, with Paddy Mulvihill showing great form in attack. The home side then scored a goal to level the game and when they took the lead soon after they seemed to have the momentum to push on for victory. A long-range free from Paddy Mulvihill then came back off the post and Gary Dolan crashed the rebound to the net. Garrycastle then went three points clear again but a second Tyrrellspass goal levelled the scores. Good work by Paddy Mulvihill set up Gary Dolan for his second goal which proved decisive, and a late Tyrrellspass point came too late to affect the outcome.
This was a decent performance from a much-changed Garrycastle team and the two points gives them an outside chance of winning the league title. The remaining championship games against Killucan and Bunbrosna will be the priority, however, as they try to book a place in the knock-out stages once again.
GARRYCASTLE: Sean Brennan, Mark McCallon, John Gaffey, Gary McCallon, Justin Barrett, Enda Mulvihill, Alan Fox, David O’Shaughnessy (0-1), Aidan Browne (0-1), Ciaran O’Neill, Doran Harte, Paddy Mulvihill (0-5), Conor Cosgrove (0-4), Paul Dillon (0-1), Johnny McGuire.
SUBS: James Dolan (for O’Neill), Gary Dolan (2-1) (for McGuire), John O’Shaughnessy (for E. Mulvihill), Robbie Shine (for J. Dolan) and Peadar Mulvihill (for Browne).

GARRYCASTLE 3-9, MOATE ALL WHITES 1-13
Garrycastle maintained the 100% record with a hard fought but deserved win over Moate All Whites in sun drenched Garrycastle last Thursday evening. This was a very good game of football played by two teams in top form and provided great entertainment for the spectators.
Playing with the aid of a stiff breeze blowing straight down the pitch, Moate AW had the better start. Two points from frees set them on the way in the fist couple of minutes. A succession of attacks had the Garrycastle defence under constant pressure and some fine point taking by the visiting forwards established a 6 point lead by the 14th minute, with Garrycastle scoreless at that stage. A point from Eoin Monaghan in the 18th minute finally got Garrycastle off the mark. Moate had another point from play in replay. A point from a 45 by Alex Gardiner, a fine score this into the stiff breeze, reduced the margin and Eoin Monaghan followed-up with a point from play after 24 minutes. A point by Moate was replied to by a pointed free from Alex Gardiner as the half time break neared. Pat Fox’s whistle ended the half on a scoreline of 0-8to 0-4 in Moate’s favour.
A point from Robbie Shine just after the restart reduced the margin, but Moate responded with a good point. The sides traded points, with the Garrycastle effort coming from Robbie Fox. Moate AW hit over two quick fire points to stretch their lead. The game’s first green flag cane in the 39th minute, when Eoin Monaghan was on the end of a flowing attack and struck the ball to the net. Moate responded well to that setback and had a point to increase their lead to 3 points. However, a second Garrycastle goal, this time from Alex Gardiner, had the sides’ level by the 42nd minute. A point from Conor Cosgrove put Garrycastle into the lead for the first time in the 43td minute. However, their lead was short-lived as Moate in a promising attack carved open the Garrycastle defence and scored a goal. Not to be out-done, Garrycastle struck back with a fine attack and Conor Cosgrove was quickest to react to a hand-pass across the Moate goalmouth to tap the ball to the net. A point from James Duignan increased the Garrycastle advantage but Moate responded with a pointed free. A pointed free from Conor Cosgrove put his side 2 points up with just a couple of minutes remaining. Moate has a close range free late on but surprisingly hit it wide. The final score was 3-9 to 1-13 in Garrycastle’s favour.
There were good performances from Gary Mullery, Gary McCallon and Alan Fox in defence. Alex Gardiner, Eoin Monaghan and Conor Cosgrove were the pick of the attack.
GARRYCASTLE: Shane O’Connell, Gary Mullery, Conor Harrington, Gary McCallon, Anthony Larkin, John O’Shaughnessy, Alan Fox, James Duignan (0-1), Neil Rattigan, Noel Galvin, Alex Gardiner (1-2, 0-2f, 0-1 45mt), Robbie Fox (0-1), Conor Cosgrove (1-2, 0-1f) Robbie Shine (0-1) and Eoin Monaghan(1-2).

Intermediate Football Championship [23 July 2012]
BALLYNAGARGY 1-14, GARRYCASTLE 0-6
Garrycastle intermediate side suffered another defeat in their third game in the championship in waterlogged Tang last Monday evening.
Garrycastle made a good start and had a point from midfielder, Matthew Guiheen, in the 2nd minute. A point from Noel Galvin doubled their lead in the 6th minute. Ballynacargy hit back strongly with a point and a goal by the 9th minute to take the lead. Two more points pushed them into a 4 point lead before Garrycastle had another point from a free by Alex Gardiner. At this stage Ballynacargy had the majority of possession and fired over two more points. A good Garrycastle build-up allowed Alan Daly to gain possession near the end line and he cut along the line and fired a shot goal-ward. However, it hit the post and rebounded to safety. A couple of more points from close range frees stretched the Ballynacargy advantage and they added another point as the first half came to a close. The score was 1-8 to 0-3 in Ballynacargy’s favour at the break.
It was Ballynacargy who made the better start to the second period and two quick fire points increased their lead. A point in reply from a Noel Galvin free gave Garrycastle some hope. The teams exchanged points, wit the Garrycastle effort coming from Alan Daly, whose shot flew just over the bar rather than into the net as he had intended. Another Ballynacargy point was replied to by a free from Noel Galvin. Alas this was Garrycastle’s last score of the game and two more Ballynacargy were registered before the full time whistle. The final score 1-14 to 0-6.
This was a disappointing performance from Garrycastle. They created very few opportunities in attack and the defence was under constant pressure. There were good displays from Conor Harrington, and Robbie Fox in defence. In attack, there was little threat other than from Alan Daly.

GARRYCASTLE 2-9, CORALSTOWN/KINNEGAD 0-13
Garrycastle secured two more points with a narrow but deserved win in their third championship game in Cusack Park, Mullingar last Sunday evening against Coralstown/Kinnegad. Playing with many regulars, due to absence, injury and suspension, Garrycastle fielded a new look line-up.
Garrycastle got off to a flyer with a point from Conor Cosgrove within 20 seconds of the throw-in. Coralstown/Kinnegad responded with a point in the 3rd minute. A pointed free by James Duignan put his side ahead and two more points from Conor Cosgrove, the first from play and the second from a free, established a 3 point lead by the 11th minute. Coralstown/Kinnegad responded in style and a rune of three points in succession had them level by the 19th minute. Ciaran O’Neill had a good point from the right wing to put his side ahead again in the 26th minute. Soon afterwards Coralstown/Kinnegad mounted a dangerous attack and only a great save by Sean Brennan prevented them scoring a goal and taking the lead. His team-mates took heart from this let-off and tacked on 3 points from play, from substitute Eoin Monaghan, Neil Rattigan and Conor Cosgrove to lead by 0-8 to 0-4 at the break.
Coralstown/Kinnegad had the aid of the stiff breeze in the second period and reduced the margin to two points with two well taken points at the start of the half. However, they say goals win games and Garrycastle got their first when Neil Rattigan was on the end of a good build up to blast the ball to the net in the 36th minute. Coralstown/Kinnegad hot back with three points, all of which came from open play, to reduce the margin to just two points again. A second Garrycastle goal from Eoin Monaghan in the 45th minute seemed to put Garrycastle into a comfortable lead. Coralstown/Kinnegad responded well to that set-back and hit over a point. A point from Conor Cosgrove, who intercepted a short kick-out, was followed by points for Coralstown/Kinnegad from paced balls in the 56th and 58th minutes to leave just a goal between the sides. Another pointed free reduced the gap to 2 points as injury time beckoned. However, Garrycastle held on for a deserved win.
There were good performances from Sean Brennan in goal, who was rock solid as well as making an important save in the first half; as well as John Gaffey and Doron Harte in defence. Conor Cosgrove, Neil Rattigan and substitute, Eoin Monaghan, were most dangerous in attack.
GARRYCASTLE: Sean Brennan, Mark McCallon, Enda Mulvihill, Gary McCallon, Alan Fox, John Gaffey, Doron Harte, Ciaran O’Neill (0-1), Aidan Browne, Neil Rattigan (1-1), Patrick Mulvihill, Robbie Shine, Conor Cosgrove (0-5, 2f), Gary Dolan and James Duignan (0-1, f).

GARRYCASTLE 4-15, MILLTOWN 2-8
Garrycastle completed their division 7A league fixtures with a win over Milltown in Garrycastle last Thursday evening. Needing a win to stay in contention, Garrycastle made a bright start and had established a 3 point lead within the first seven minutes, courtesy of a pointed free by Robbie Shine, and points from play by Michael Kelly and Robbie Shine. However, Milltown responded in style and points in the 9th and 10th minutes reduced the gap to just a point. The visitors grabbed the lead in the 12th minute as a well constructed move opened up the Garrycastle defence. Garrycastle’s goalkeeper, Barry Ruane, did manage to get finger tips to the shot on goal but the power of it was enough for the ball to go over the line. Garrycastle responded to this setback with a point from Paul Mulvihill. Milltown registered a point, but Garrycastle responded with points from a free by Robbie Shine and by Peadar Mulvihill from play. A second Milltown goal came next as a penetrating run again opened up the Garrycastle defence and was finished to the net. Milltown stretched the lead to four with a point in the 27th minute. Garrycastle pressed forward looking for a score before the break and were rewarded with a pointed free from Robbie Shine in injury time to leave the score at 2-4 to 0-7 in favour of the visitors.
Garrycastle needed to step it up considerably in the second half if they were to keep their league title hopes alive. Full back, Sean Brennan, set the tone for this side with a surging run from defence and a cool finish for a point in the very first minute of the half. Paul Mulvihill chipped in with two well taken points and Garrycastle had the lead in the 39th minute as Robbie Shine converted a free. A goal from substitute, Robbie Fox, scored shortly after his introduction, pushed Garrycastle further ahead and this was followed by another pointed free from Robbie Shine. A goal by John McGowan, which was followed up with a goal from another substitute, Conor Molloy a minute later, put their aside into a commanding lead by the mid point of the second half. Conor Molloy had a point and a second goal from John McGowan left clear daylight between the sides with about 10 minutes remaining. Milltown had their first score of the second period in the 52nd minute but two quick-fire points from Robbie Fox stretched the lead further. To their credit, Milltown did not give up and pressed forward in numbers. They were rewarded for their efforts with three points from play in the final moments. Seamus McCormack’s whistle signalled the end on a scoreline of 4-15 to 2-8 in Garrycastle’s favour.
A game of two halves for Garrycastle, they had plenty of possession in the first but found scores hard to come by. In the second period they played some lovely football and were rewarded with many excellent scores. In defence there were strong performances from Sean Brennan, Jack Donoghue and Michael Kelly. Noel Galvin and Robbie Shine gave the home side dominance of the midfield, with Robbie flawless from placed balls. Peadar Mulvihill, John McGowan and substitutes Conor Molloy and Robbie Fox were most prominent in attack.
GARRYCASTLE: Barry Ruane, Gary Mullery, Sean Brennan (0-1), Jack Donoghue, Frank Doolan, Anthony Larkin, Michael Kelly (0-1), Noel Galvin, Robbie Shine (0-6, 5f), Brian Carty, Peadar Mulvihill, (0-1), John McGowan (2-0), Padraig Cosgrove, Paul Donovan and Paul Mulvihill (0-3).

GARRYCASTLE 4-8, BUNBROSNA 0-11
Garrycastle collected two valuable league points from this home fixture last Wednesday. After some heavy showers in the afternoon playing conditions were difficult on a heavy pitch but the teams served up some entertaining football. Garrycastle were short several regulars while a number of players were playing their second game in 24 hours, so in the circumstances they did well to secure an important victory. The foundations for this success were laid in the opening half when playing against a stiff breeze. A brilliantly executed goal by Gary Dolan set the tone, and further goals by David O’Shaughnessy and Paddy Mulvihill, both resulting from incisive passing movements, helped Garrycastle to lead by 3-4 to 0-7 at half time. Despite playing into the wind Bunbrosna had good spells of pressure in the second half and scored some excellent points. However, they never really threatened to get the goal they needed and Garrycastle picked off enough points to maintain a comfortable lead. A second goal from Paddy Mulvihill late in the game finally settled the issue.
This was a good display by Garrycastle but there is still much work to be done before the vital championship games in the weeks to come. After some early uncertainty the defence coped reasonably well while David O’Shaughnessy and James Duignan shaded the midfield battle. The forwards combined well throughout and got some very good scores, with Paddy Mulvihill, Robbie Fox and Gary Dolan especially sharp.
GARRYCASTLE: Sean Brennan, Gary McCallon, Enda Mulvihill, Alan Fox, Justin Barrett, John O’Shaughnessy, Ciaran O’Neill, James Duignan (0-1, free), David O’Shaughnessy (1-0), Conor Cosgrove (0-2, frees), Paddy Mulvihill (2-3), Robbie Fox, Robbie Shine, Gary Dolan (1-1), Johnny McGuire.
SUBS: Peadar Mulvihill (for R. Fox), Alan Daly (0-1) for Shine, Matthew Guiheen (for McGuire), Conor Harrington (for Barrett) and Brian Carty (for Cosgrove).

GARRYCASTLE 1-10, KILBEGGAN SHAMROCKS 0-12
Garrycastle made it 4 wins from four with a hard fought but deserved win over Kilbeggan Shamrocks in Garrycastle last Tuesday evening. While it was dry, the pitch was heavy following all of the recent rain.. Playing into a slight breeze, Garrycastle made a bright start and had a point in the first minute when Eoin Monaghan pointed from close range. Johnny McGuire got his side’s second point in the 4th minute and the same player had his second and Garrycastle’s third point soon after. A point by Ciaran O’Neill increased the lead in the 10th minute. While it took Kilbeggan a long time to find their range, they had a point in the 13th minute and followed it up with a second almost immediately. A pointed free for the visitors was added to by one from play to level matters in the 16th minute. Garrycastle regained the lead with a point from Robbie Fox and Noel Galvin put his side two points up with a well taken score. Kilbeggan responded in style and stuck over two well taken points to level matters again. A point for the visitors put them into the lead for the first time as the half time break approached. However, Johnny McGuire was on hand to level matters yet again in the final minute of the half. The half time score was 0-7 a piece.
Kilbeggan Shamrocks had the better of the early exchanges of the second period. They registered three points, all of which were from play, to take a 3 point lead by the 41st minute. Another point increased their lead. In a tight game a goal was always going to be vital and Garrycastle raised a green flag in the 47th minute after good approach play, when Eoin Monaghan finished coolly to the net. A pointed free in the 58th minute from James Duignan, awarded for a foul on Eoin Monaghan, put his side ahead as time ran out. A lovely pass from Rory McGowan set up Conor Cosgrove and he converted with his trusty left boot wit h only a minute remaining. Kilbeggan pressed forward and had a point from a close range free in the first minute of added time. They won possession from the kick-out and when looking for an equaliser. However, the Garrycastle defence held form to record the narrowest of wins.
There were good performances from goalkeeper, Shane O’Connell and from Gary Mullery, Alan Fox and Conor Harrington in defence. Ciaran O’Neill worked tirelessly in midfield. In attack, Robbie Fox, Johnny McGuire and Eoin Monaghan were always a threat.
This game saw the welcome return of Rory McGowan to action. It was great to see him back in the green and red.
GARRYCASTLE: Shane O’Connell, Gary Mullery, Sean Brennan, Jack Donoghgue, Anthony Larkin, Alan Fox, Conor Harrington, Ciaran O’Neill (0-1), Justin Barrett, Noel Galvin (0-1), Peadar Mulvihill, Robbie Fox (0-1), Alan Daly, Johnny McGuire (0-4) and Eoin Monaghan(1-1).

GARRYCASTLE 1-10, TANG 0-13
Garrycastle’s junior side maintained their unbeaten record with a hard fought and merited draw in Tang last Tuesday evening despite playing with just 13 for the final 20 minutes of the game.
Noel Galvin put Garrycastle into the lead in the 3rd minute but this was responded to immediately with a point from the home side. Tang went ahead in their next attack with a good point before Brian Carty had a lovely score from the right to level matters. A pointed free from Noel Galvin put his side ahead only for Tang to reply with a point in the 16th minute. A point from john McGowan put the Garrycastle lads ahead again but Tang responded with a point to level matters again. Johnny McGuire had a point but in line with the established pattern, Tang replied with an equaliser after 25 minutes. Garrycastle again took the lead when Noel Galvin converted a close range free and this brought the first half scoring to an end with Garrycastle ahead by 0-6 to 0-5.
Two quick points at the start of the second half put the home side into the lead but Peadar Mulvihill replied for Garrycastle to level maters yet again. A goal from Alex Gardiner, who was on the end of a flowing move put Garrycastle firmly into the lead. However, their cause was not helped when Anthony Larkin received a second yellow card, followed by a red, to reduce the side to 14. It got even worse for the visitors within a couple of minutes as Johnny McGuire was also yellow carded for the second time and the Garrycastle team was reduced to just 13 players with about 20 minutes remaining. Tang had a point but two pointed frees from Alex Gardiner, both from all of 50 meters, gave Garrycastle the edge. Tang made the superiority in numbers tell with three unanswered points to reduce the margin to just a point with about 8 minutes to play. At this stage it did not look good for Garrycastle, but the 13 players fought for every ball as if their lives depended on it. A fine point from John McGowan put Garrycastle ahead again but Tang responded with a point with just two minutes remaining. However, Garrycastle despite their numerical disadvantage had a couple of attacks but could not get a telling shot on target and had to settle for a draw.
This a was gutsy performance from Garrycastle, who had to play most of the second half short two players. The showed great determination and heart to secure a draw in these circumstances. However, they could surely have got all the points if they had a full complement of players, so their indiscipline cost them. There were excellent performances from Barry Ruane, Anthony Duignan, Frank Doolin and Michael Kelly in defence. Noel Galvin was immense in midfield. Alex Gardiner, Peadar Mulvihill, John McGowan and Paul Donovan battled for everything in attack and Padraig Cosgrove tracking back throughout.
GARRYCASTLE: Michael Fagan, Barry Ruane, Anthony Duignan, John Murphy, Frank Doolan, Anthony Larkin, Michael Kelly, Noel Galvin (0-3, 2f), Johnny McGuire (0-1), Alex Gardiner (1-2, 0-2f), Peadar Mulvihill (0-1), Brian Carty (0-1), John McGowan (0-2), Paul Donovan and Padraig Cosgrove.

TUBBERCLAIR 1-11, GARRYCASTLE 2-6
Garrycastle made the trip to Tubberclair last Friday evening but came away empty-handed. There was a strong breeze blowing straight down the pitch and Garrycastle faced into it in the first half.
Garrycastle had their first point in the 2nd minute as Neil Rattigan broke forward and hit a fine score. Tubberclair responded with a point from play and took the lead with a pointed free after just 7 minutes. Garrycastle were awarded a penalty when Johnny McGuire was fouled and Patrick Mulvihill raised the green flag with a well directed shot to the net in the 12th minute. Tubberclair responded well to this set back with a point but this was replied to by a point from Conor Cosgrove. A pointed free for the home side was soon followed by a goal as a slick move opened up the Garrycastle defence in the 22nd minute. Johnny McGuire had a point for Garrycastle but two converted frees in the final minutes of the half saw Tubberclair ahead by 1-6 to 1-3 at the break.
On the resumption Garrycastle had a point from James Duignan but Tubberclair registered yet another point from a free in reply. Patrick Mulvihill pointed from play after good approach play but a point from a free and one form play pushed the how side further ahead by the 44th minute. There was only a point between the sides a minute later when Patrick Mulvihill was released and goaled after taking the ball around the advancing Tubberclair goalkeeper. The match was level soon afterwards, when Conor Cosgrove pointed a close range free, with about 10 minutes remaining. Both sides had chances but fluffed them. However, Tubberclair grabbed a point in the 58th minute and had another a minute later to establish a two point lead as full time approached. Garrycastle pressed forward but a combination of poor shooting and resolute defence saw the home side emerge with the win on a scoreline of 1-11 to 2-6.
This was a poor performance from Garrycastle, who were missing their county and a number of other players. There were good performances from Enda Mulvihill, Ciaran O’Neill and substitute Gary Mullery in defence. The midfield was in and out of the game, while Patrick Mulvihill was the only forward to impress.
GARRYCASTLE: Sean Brennan, Conor Harrington, Enda Mulvihill, Gary McCallon, Alan Fox, Ciaran O’Neill, Anthony Larkin, Seanie O’Donoghue, Aidan Browne, Neil Rattigan (0-1), Patrick Mulvihill (2-1, 1-0 pen), James Duignan (0-1), Conor Cosgrove (0-2, 1f), Robbie Shine and Johnny McGuire (0-1).

TANG 1-21, GARRYCASTLE 1-7
Garrycastle intermediate side suffered a heavy defeat in their second game in this year’s championship in Tubberclair last Wednesday night. Short of many regulars, it was always going to be tough to get anything against a strong, fit and determined Tang side.
Tang made a blistering start and rattled off six points, all from play, in the opening six minutes. It was not until the 8th minute that Garrycastle got off the mark with a well taken point from Conor Molloy. Tang had a point in reply but Noel Galvin responded with his side’s second point after 12 minutes. A point for Tang was replied to by one from a free by Alan Daly. A goal for Garrycastle was scored in the 16th minute as Paul Donovan collected a fine pass and drilled the ball to the net. Tang added yet another point but a pointed free from Noel Galvin reduced the gap. Tang scored a point from play and Alan Daly converted a close range fee to bring the half to a close on a scoreline of 0-10 to 1-5 in favour of Tang.
Alan Daly had the first chance on the resumption of play but his effort for goal was blocked and he hit the rebound over the bar to reduce the gap to just a point. However, that was as good as it got for the boys in green and red as Tang took complete control and rattled off a succession of points to build up a substantial lead. Garrycastle were reduced to 14 players mid way through the half, when Noel Galvin was shown a second yellow card – followed by the red. Tang continued to dominate possession and build up the lead. Alan Daly had a point in the closing minute of the game but Tang got through for a goal in the first minute of added time and leave the final score 1-21 to 1-7.
Garrycastle will be very disappointed with the performance and result. However, this was a very young side on display and they never gave up trying to play. Marl Keenan was solid in goal and could do little about the goal conceded at the end. Donovan Hermbusche and Gary Mullery impressed in defence. The forwards saw little of the ball but Alan Daly was dangerous whenever he had possession.
GARRYCASTLE: Mark Keenan, Gary Mullery, Donovan Hermbusche, Anthony Duignan, Brian Carty, Johnny McGuire, Anthony Larkin, Noel Galvin (0-2, 1f), Conor Molloy (0-1), Barry Ruane, Peadar Mulvihill, Padraig Cosgrove, Paul Mulvihill, Alan Daly (0-4, 2f) and Paul Donovan (1-0).

GARRYCASTLE 2-14, MILLTOWN 2-7
Garrycastle maintained their 100% record in Division 3 when collecting two points from this trip to Milltown on Thursday of last week. A light drizzle throughout the game made conditions difficult but the Milltown pitch was as usual in excellent condition and the teams served up an entertaining game. The issue was in doubt for most of the game and It was only in the last five minutes that Garrycastle notched the extra points to seal their victory. An early point by wing-back Robbie Fox gave Garrycastle a good start but carelessness in defence allowed the home team in for two quick goals to open up a five point lead. A well-taken goal by Robbie Shine helped Garrycastle to get back in the game and another expertly finished goal from Conor Cosgrove late in the half gave his team an interval lead of 2-5 to 2-3.
The third quarter featured a few good points from both teams as play swung from end to end. Some neat points by Robbie Shine stretched Garrycastle’s lead but Milltown were still in touch with five minutes remaining. The introduction of Adam Kennedy helped Garrycastle win more possession around the middle and a flurry of late points gave them a seven points winning margin, which was probably an unfair reflection of the home team’s efforts.
This was an encouraging display by Garrycastle in view of the number of absentees, and several players showed up very well. Apart from the early lapses the defence was reasonably solid with the half back line particularly impressive. James Duignan and Ciaran O’Neill battled well at midfield while Conor Cosgrove and Robbie Shine took their scores very well. Adam Kennedy made an immediate impact when introduced while Barry Ruane, in his first adult game for the club, showed that he has plenty to contribute.
GARRYCASTLE: Stephen McGuire, Gary Mullery, John O’Shaughnessy, Gary McCallon, Anthony Larkin, Alan Fox, Robbie Fox (0-1), James Duignan (0-3), Ciaran O’Neill, Brian Carty, Conor Cosgrove (1-2, 1 free), Peadar Mulvihill, Padraig Cosgrove (0-1), Robbie Shine (1-6, 1 free), Paul Mulvihill.

GARRYCASTLE 3-11, ATHLONE 2-12
Garrycastle seniors secured another two league points from this fixture in Páirc Chiaráin last Friday evening. Playing against the wind Garrycastle got some early points from Dessie Dolan (2) and Seanie O’Donoghue but Athlone kept in touch until a well-worked goal from Gary Dolan put Garrycastle four points clear. A great point from wing back Ciarán O’Neill extended the lead but Athlone then had their best spell and took the lead approaching half time. Garrycastle responded with two points from James Dolan but the home team went in leading by 1-7 to 1-6 at the break.
Dessie Dolan equalised in the opening seconds of the second half before the game seemed to swing in Garrycastle’s favour when following the award of a Garrycastle penalty Athlone’s full back was red-carded. Paddy Mulvihill’s kick was saved, however, and Athlone drew inspiration from this let-off by going two points clear. A brilliant goal from James Dolan after great work by his cousin Dessie and Paddy Mulvihill put Garrycastle back in front. Points from Paddy Mulvihill and Gary McCallon extended the lead but Athlone’s superior fitness then became evident. They notched a goal and three points to go three points clear as full time approached and seemed set for victory. Garrycastle were struggling but refused to panic. Paddy Mulvihill reduced the leeway to two points and was then very much involved in the approach play which ended with Gary Dolan being fouled in the square when he seemed certain to score. Paddy Mulvihill kept his composure to convert the penalty and an injury time point from James Dolan put the seal on Garrycastle’s victory.
This was a patchy display by Garrycastle and a lack of sharpness was evident throughout. Nevertheless the players deserve credit for their willingness to keep plugging away to the finish to secure a victory that seemed improbable in the final quarter. The hunger for further glory seems to be still there and the return of some absent regulars will ensure keen competition for places.
GARRYCASTLE: Sean Brennan, Conor Harrington, Enda Mulvihill, Gary McCallon (0-1), Ciarán O’Neill (0-1), John Gaffey, Mark McCallon, Seanie O’Donoghue (0-1), Aidan Browne, Conor Cosgrove, Paddy Mulvihill (1-2, goal pen), James Duignan, James Dolan (1-3), Gary Dolan (1-0), Dessie Dolan (0-3, 1 free).

The seniors suffered a defeat in the division one league against Maryland. Both teams were missing key players due to county duty and a very good game was played out in Garrycastle last Saturday. Garrycastle held a lead going into the last fifteen minutes but a spirited finish from a very fit Maryland helped them to a deserved victory by 3 points.

GARRYCASTLE 2-13, CASTLEDALY 1-13
Garrycastle got a much needed win in their second championship game in sunny Mullingar last Sunday evening against the strong challenge put up by Castledaly.
Seanie O’Donoghue got his side off to a perfect start with a fine point in the 3rd minute. However, Garrycastle were rocked back when a slick Castledaly move resulted in the game’s first goal after 5 minutes. A fine point from Dessie Dolan narrowed the gap but this was relied to by a point from Castledaly in the 13th minute. Garrycastle began to take control in midfield and pointed frees from Conor Cosgrove in the 16th and 23rd minutes were scored either side of points from Dessie Dolan to put the champions up by two points. It got even better for Garrycastle in their next attack as a wonderful Ciaran O’Neill pass found Patrick Mulvihill and he crashed the ball to the back of the Castledaly net. Castledaly responded with a fine point but a good point from Ciaran O’Neill put Garrycastle further ahead after 29 minutes. Castledaly are renowned for their fighting qualities and responded in typical fashion with three unanswered points in the remaining minutes of the first half to leave just two points between the sides at the break.
A blistering start to the second half saw Castledaly hit over four points in a row and take a two point lead with just 5 minutes of the second half gone. Patrick Mulvihill responded with a point for Garrycastle but Castledaly has a point in reply. Points from Dessie Dolan, Ciaran O’Neill and James Duignan saw Garrycastel retake the lead by the 50th minute. But this did not last long and another point from Castledaly levelled matters with 9 minutes remaining. A blistering spell of scoring with points from Dessie Dolan and Adam Kennedy was completed with a goal from James Dolan to put Garrycastle into a five point lead with just 4 minutes left. Back came Castledaly with a point and as they pressed for a goal all their effort could yield was a pointed free in the 3rd minute of injury time. The final score 2-13 to 1-13 in Garrycastle’s favour.
This was a mixed performance from Garrycastle. At times they played fine football but were ponderous on other occasions. The defence were guilty of many lazy tackles and conceded too many frees. However, Enda Mulvihill and Doran Harte were as solid as ever. Ciaran O’Neill had a good game in midfield and capped his display with two well taken points. Dessie Dolan and Patrick Mulvihill were the pick of the forwards and the two substitutes, Alan Fox and Aidan Browne, played well when introduced.
GARRYCASTLE: Sean Brennan, Mark McCallon, Enda Mulvihill, Gary McCallon, Doron Harte, Adam Kennedy (0-1), James Dolan (1-0), Seanie O’Donoghue (0-1), Ciaran O’Neill (0-2), Neil Rattigan, Patrick Mulvihill (1-1), James Duignan (0-1), Conor Cosgrove (0-2, 2f), Robbie Shine and Dessie Dolan (0-5).

GARRYCASTLE 1-11, MULLINGAR SHAMROCKS 1-6
Garrycastle maintained their 100% league record with a well merited win over the visitors, Mullingar Shamrocks, in Garrycastle last Sunday morning. The game was played in very windy conditions, which made it difficult when shooting for goal, nonetheless the sides served up an entertaining game for the small numbers in attendance.
The game took some time to settle and we had to wait until the 5th minute for the first point, when Robbie Shine converted a close range free. Noel Galvin double the Garrycastle lead soon after with a point from play. The visitors were awarded a penalty in what was a rare attack. However, Stephen McGuire made an excellent block on the goal bound effort and managed to deflect it over his bar for the first score for Shamrocks. A point from Conor Cosgrove put Garrycastle two up again and Robbie Shine had his second point from a free soon after. Shamrocks hit back with a point from a close range free but Robbie Shine responded with yet another successful free to put his side up by 3 points in the 23rd minute. It was all Garrycastle from there to the end of the first period. Two points from frees by Robbie Shine, were scored either side of a point from play by Alan Daly. When Sean Carroll signalled for half time the home side held the lead on a scoreline of 0-8 to 0-2.
Mullingar Shamrocks made a determined start to the second half. They had the lions share of possession and rattled off three points, all of which came from play, in the opening 10 minutes of the half, to reduce the margin to just three points. However, in their next attack, Garrycastle took a decisive lead when Peadar Mulvihill made space and lobbed the ball over the head the Shamrocks goalkeeper to the net. This score was quickly followed up with a point from play by Robbie Shine. Further points from substitute, Padraig Cosgrove, and a free by Conor Cosgrove put Garrycastle in a very strong position with only 5 minutes remaining. Shamrock rallied and scored a goal and a point in the remainder of the game. However, it was a case of too little too late as Garrycastle ran out winners by 1-11 to 1-6.
This was an excellent win for Garrycastle, which was built on a strong defensive performance and some good attacking play. Stephen McGuire was solid in goal, and his penalty save was vital in building a lead. Conor Harrington, Sean Brennan and Gary McCallon were the pick of the defence. Ciaran O’Neill and Noel Galvin gave Garrycastle the edge in midfield. Peadar Mulvihill and Robbie Shine were the best in attack, but were well assisted by Conor Cosgrove and Alan Daly.
GARRYCASTLE: Stephen McGuire, Gary Mullery, Conor Harrington, Sean Brennan, Anthony Larkin, John O’Shaughnessy, Gary McCallon, Ciaran O’Neill, Noel Galvin (0-1), Brian Carty, Conor Cosgrove (0-2, 1f), Peadar Mulvihill (1-0), Alan Daly (0-1), Robbie Shine (0-6, 4f) and Robbie Fox.

GARRYCASTLE 2-14, THE DOWNS 1-12
Garrycastle seniors collected two points from their first league game of the season in The Downs last Thursday. This fixture doubled up as a Feis Cup match so they have also progressed to the next stage of that competition. This was a well-contested game of open football and it was only in the closing stages that Garrycastle succeeded in putting some daylight between the teams. They had started well with points from Aidan Browne and James Duignan but the home team began to find gaps in Garrycastle’s defence and after 15 minutes they led by 1-4 to 0-3. Goals from Seanie O’Donoghue and Paddy Mulvihill helped Garrycastle to a half-time lead of 2-7 to 1-8.
Two quick points from Paddy Mulvihill after the break extended Garrycastle’s lead but a number of missed opportunities kept the issue in doubt for most of the half. The Downs are always a formidable opposition on their home turf and they battled to the end. However, Garrycastle seemed to be able to get scores when most needed and they ran out winners by five points. It was a patchy display by the Leinster champions but it’s always good to start the league on a winning note. Best performances on the evening came from Gary McCallon, Ciaran O’Neill, Seanie O’Donoghue, David O’Shaughnessy, James Dolan and Paddy Mulvihill.
TEAM: Stephen McGuire, John O’Shaughnessy, Enda Mulvihill, Gary McCallon, Ciaran O’Neill, John Gaffey (0-1), Anthony Larkin, Seanie O’Donoghue (1-0), David O’Shaughnessy, James Duignan (0-1), Paddy Mulvihill (1-5), Aidan Browne (0-2), Eoin Monaghan (0-1), James Dolan (0-2), Dessie Dolan (0-2, 1 free).

GARRYCASTLE 1-10, ST. MARYS ROCHFORDBRIDGE 1-8
Garrycastle’s junior side made it two wins out of two in the league when they travelled to Rochfordbridge to take on St Marys last Thursday evening.
Playing with the aid of a strong breeze, the home side made a bright start and scored a point from their very first attack. Garrycastle hit back with a point from midfielder, Johnny McGuire. However, Garrycastle were rocked back straight away when a short kick-out by the Garrycastle’s Michael Fagan led to a passage of play where possession was lost by the defenders and the ball was dispatched to the net. John McGowan responded with a good point from play for the visitors. Pascal Dillon was unlucky when his powerfully struck shot hit the crossbar and rebounded to safety. A point for St Marys was replied to with one form Conor Molloy from play as the first half approached the mid point. However, from there to the half time break, St Marys dominated the play and reeled off a succession of points, two from play and two from frees, to lead on a scoreline of 1-6 to m0-3 at the break.
The second half started no better for Garrycastle, as St Marys tacked on a point from open play to increase their lead to 7 points. However, this was to be the catalyst for the visitors to up their game. They took control in the midfield and the forwards began to cause all sorts of problems for the St Marys defence. A point from Johnny McGuire was quickly added to with a goal from Conor Molloy, who just got his fist to the ball before the St Marys goalkeeper could intercept a pass to him and the ball trickled into the unguarded net. The same play then added a point to narrow the gap to just 2 points with about 20 minutes remaining. Garrycastle continued to press forward and points from substitutes, Paul Donovan and Paul Mulvihill, to level matters by the 45th minute. A magnificent point from another substitute, Michael Kelly, from all of 45 meters on the left wing, put his side ahead for the first time in the game after 48 minutes. Further points from Robbie Shine and Paul Donovan put Garrycastle 3 points up with just 5 minutes remaining. To their credit St Marys responded in determined fashion but could not break down the Garrycastle defence. They had a goal opportunity near the end but were foiled by a save from Michael Fagan and the follow-up shot was blocked by Sean Brennan. St Marys did manage a point in the final minute but Garrycastel ran out winners on a scoreline of 1-10 to1-8.
This was a reasonable performance from Garrycastle, where they struggled for long period in the first half but dominated in the second. There were some good individual performances from Sean Brennan, Peadar Mulvihill who moved to wing back with the injury to Michael Dunning, John McGowan and Conor Molloy. All three substitutes made a telling contribution in addition to their scores.
GARRYCASTLE: Michael Fagan, Stephen McGuire, Sean Brennan, Finbarr Murray, Frank Doolan, Anthony Larkin, Michael Dunning, Noel Galvin, Johnny McGuire (0-2), Brain Ganley, Robbie Shine (0-1), Peadar Mulvihill, John McGowan (0-1), Conor Molloy (1-2) and Pascal Dillon.

MILLTOWNPASS 1-8, GARRYCASTLE 1-6
Garrycastle's return to the Intermediate grade for the first time since their final success in 1997 ended in disappointment when they lost to a more experienced Milltownpass team in Rosemount last Tuesday. Rosemount's pitch was in excellent condition and the game started well for Garrycastle with a quick point from Paul Mulvihill. Milltownpass had the assistance of the wind but their shooting let them down on several occasions and all they could manage in the opening quarter was a pointed “45”. By that stage Garrycastle had built up a good lead with a very well taken goal by Peadar Mulvihill and two good points from Noel Galvin and Anthony Larkin. Gary Mullery had to retire with a nasty facial injury but Jack Donohue proved to be a capable replacement. In the final ten minutes of the half, however, Milltownpass took advantage of a lack of concentration on the part of some Garrycastle players and scored three points, including two from frees, to leave them trailing by 1-3 to 0-4 at the break.
Milltownpass started the second half with purpose and quickly reduced the margin to the minimum. Robbie Shine restored Garrycastle's two point advantage, but when a careless pass gave the ball away in midfield Milltownpass swept up-field and took the lead for the first time with a well-taken goal. When they quickly added a point Garrycastle appeared in big trouble but to their credit they responded well. Paul Mulvihill kicked a good point and Robbie Shine had Garrycastle's only score from a free to level the scores. A missed free at this juncture was to prove costly, however, and in the closing minutes Milltownpass got the two crucial scores to finish as narrow winners.
Garrycastle will be disappointed to have let this game slip from what appeared to be a good position, and will need to show a more sustained effort and concentration in the tough games that lie ahead. The return of Tom McHugh, Donovan Hermbusche, Conor Cosgrove and Alan Daly, all of whom were unavailable for this game, will strengthen the team for the remaining games. They will be heartened by the performances of Conor Harrington, Sean Brennan, Ciaran O'Neill, Anthony Larkin, Robbie Fox, Neill Rattigan and sub Adam Kennedy, while younger players Mark Keenan and Jack Donohue showed that they have much to contribute to the club in the future.
GARRYCASTLE: Mark Keenan, Gary Mullery, Conor Harrington, Sean Brennan, Anthony Larkin (0-1), Ciaran O'Neill, Gary McCallon, Johnny McGuire, Noel Galvin (0-1), Neill Rattigan, Peadar Mulvihill (1-0), Robbie Fox, Paul Mulvihill (0-2), Conor Molloy, Robbie Shine (0-2, 1 free).
SUBS: Jack Donohue for Mullery (injured), Adam Kennedy for Molloy, Padraig Cosgrove for McGuire and Michael Monaghan for Shine.

GARRYCASTLE 1-11, TYRRELLSPASS 3-5
Garrycastle senior side were given a guard of honour by their first round opponents, Tyrrellspass, as they entered the Cusack Park field to defend their Westmeath senior championship title. The champions started brightly and had a point on the board within a minute as Dessie Dolan converted a free he won himself. Paul Dillon then added a point from play and Aidan Brown had the third in the 3rd minute, again from play to put Garrycastle ahead by 0-3 to no score. However, Tyrrellspass began to secure possession and four unanswered points had them in the lead by the 13th minute. A pointed free by Dessie Dolan levelled the score in the 19th minute of play. An excellent point from Paul Dillon pushed Garrycastle ahead again soon after. The game’s first goal arrived in the 21st minute as Patrick Mulvihill was on the end of a good attack and shot to the net. However, Garrycastle were rocked back in the 27th minute as a dropping ball was fielded by the goalkeeper, but he was adjudged by the umpire to have brought the ball behind the line and a goal was signalled. It got worse for the champions in the final minutes, as Tyrrellspass were awarded a penalty and duly converted to score their second goal of the half. They were not finished there and tacked on a point from a free in the last minute of added time to leave Tyrrellspass ahead by 2-5 to 1-5 at the break.
A third Tyrrellspass goal was scored in the first minute of the second half as Stephen McGuire spilled a ball and it was dispatched to the net. So now down by 6 points, it was put right up to the champions. Dessie Dolan hit over a point from play and the Garrycastle cause was helped when Tyrrellspass were reduced to 14 players as one of their number was given a red card for a foul on James Dolan in the 34th minute. Patrick Mulvihill hit over a point and Dessie Dolan was again on target in the 41st minute. The same player converted a free and then substitute, Enda Mulvihill, fisted a point to reduce the gap to a single point with about 12 minutes remaining. Garrycastle were then delivered a blow as Dessie Dolan received a second yellow card from Referee, Barry Kelly, leaving it a 14 a side game. It was level on the score board a couple of minutes later as Gary Dolan hit over a fine point with some 9 minutes remaining. Both sides had opportunities to get the winning score, but the defences held firm and the final whistle saw the sides share the points on a scoreline of 1-11 to 3-5.
This was a patchy performance from Garrycastle, who played some good football but at times were guilty of over elaboration and misplaced passes. There were good performances from Doron Harte and James Dolan in defence. Dessie Dolan was again our most dangerous forward but he was well supported by Patrick Mulvihill and Gary Dolan.
GARRYCASTLE: Stephen McGuire, Mark McCallon, John Gaffey, John O’Shaughessy, Doron Harte, James Dolan, Alan Fox, Seanie O’Donoghue, David O’Shaughnessy, Paul Dillon (0-2), Patrick Mulvihill (1-1), Aidan Browne (0-1), James Duignan, Gary Dolan (0-1) and Dessie Dolan (0-5, 3f).

GARRYCASTLE 0-11, ST JOSEPHS 0-8
Garrycastle’s junior side got their league campaign off to a winning start last Friday night with a narrow but deserved win over the visitors, St Josephs. The first half was played in driving rain and this made underfoot conditions and handling difficult for both teams. An illustration of this was an injury picked up in the 2nd minute by Johnny McGuire when he fell awkwardly in the middle of the pitch as he fielded a ball and had to be replaced.
Garrycastle made the better start and had a point in the second minute from Brian Carty. Noel Galvin doubled their lead with a point in the 10th minute. However, St Josephs hit back with two points in quick succession to level matters in the 13th minute. The visitors had a goal chance soon after but Garrycastle net minder, Michael Fagan, brought off a great save and the danger was cleared. St Joseph did take the lead in the 19th minute but Peadar Mulvihill responded with a point for Garrycastle almost immediately. A point from substitute, Paul Gunning, put Garrycastle into the lead again in the 27th minute. The visitors put good use to the additional time played for the injury to Johnny McGuire by scoring an equaliser in the 4th minute of added time to leave the sides level at the break on 0-4 a piece.
St Joseph took the lead in the 3rd minute of the second half with a point but Garrycastle hit back strongly and in their best period of attacking hit over 3 points in a 3 minute spell to take a two point advantage. The Garrycastle points came from Conor Molloy, Paul Mulvihill and Brian Carty. St Josephs had a point in the 37th minute to reduce the gap to 1 again. Michael Fagan brought off yet another wonderful save to deny St Josephs a goal and a point from substitute, Jack Donoghue increased the gap to 2 in the 41st minute and Alex Gardiner pushed it out to 3 with a well taken score as the game entered the final 10 minutes. Further points from Peadar Mulvihill and Noel Galvin established a 5 point lead with just 3 minutes remaining. Both sides had a player red carded for a second yellow card offence and St Josephs finished the game strongly with a point in the first minute of injury time and a point from a free (the only score that was not from play in the entire game) just before the final whistle.
This was a mixed bag from Garrycastle, with a much improved display in the second half. Michael Fagan brought off some fine saves in goal and deserved to keep his goal intact. There were good defensive displays by Sean Brennan, and Ciaran O’Neill in particular. Noel Galvin was solid throughout and was well supported by Robbie Shine when he mover to midfield on Johnny McGuire’s departure due to injury. There were good performances in attack by Brain Carty, Alex Gardiner and Peadar Mulvihill.
Garrycastle: Michael Fagan, Michael Donoghue, Sean Brennan, Anthony Duignan, Stephen McGuire, Ciaran O’Neill, Anthony Larkin, Noel Galvin (0-2), Johnny McGuire, Brian Carty (0-2), Alex Gardiner (0-1), Robbie Shine, Peadar Mulvihill (0-2), Conor Molloy (0-1) and Paul Mulvihill (0-1).

Garrycastle 3-11, Ballinagore 1-2
Garrycastle’s first adult game of the 2012 season took place in Ballinagore last Tuesday evening, and ended with a good win against an understrength home team. With several players unavailable for various reasons, Garrycastle were fortunate that three players who have played no football for several months rallied to the cause, and we are indebted to Anthony Duignan, Neill Rattigan and Brian Carty who ensured the club could fulfil this fixture. Garrycastle started badly, conceding a goal from a penalty in the opening minute, and when the home team quickly added a point things looked ominous. However, inspired by newcomer Ciaran O’Neill, Neil Rattigan, James Duignan and Conor Cosgrove, Garrycastle gained control and held their opponents scoreless for the remainder of the half. A good goal by Padraig Cosgrove was the key score and helped Garrycastle to lead by 1-6 to 1-1 at the break.
Early second half points from James Duignan and Conor Molloy, followed by Padraig Cosgrove’s second goal, put Garrycastle in the driving seat and they were never seriously troubled thereafter. A well-taken goal by Anthony Duignan put the seal on a welcome win, and gives the team a promising start to their Division 3 campaign. The players know only too well, however, that big improvements will be needed for the tougher games that lie ahead.
GARRYCASTLE: Stephen McGuire, Gary Mullery, Sean Brennan, Gary McCallon, Neill Rattigan, Ciaran O’Neill, Anthony Larkin (0-1), James Duignan (0-3), Noel Galvin (Captain), Brian Carty, Conor Cosgrove (0-4, 1 free), Peadar Mulvihill (0-1), Paul Mulvihill, Conor Molloy (0-2), Padraig Cosgrove (2-0).
Subs: Anthony Duignan (1-0) for Paul Mulvihill (injured); Paul Mulvihill for Padraig Cosgrove (injured).

GARRYCASTLE: Shane O’Connell, Conor Harrington, Anthony Duignan, Jack Donoghue, Robbie Fox, Anthony Larkin, Alex Gardiner (0-1), Matthew Guiheen (0-1), Johnny McGuire, Brian Carty, Peadar Mulvihill, Noel Galvin (0-3, 2f), Alan Daly (0-1), Conor Molloy, and Mark Keenan.
