Senior Ladies League Final (Div. 1) [20 August 2021]

Garrycastle 4-06, Milltown 2-10

Massive congratulations to our senior ladies team who overcame Milltown in Milltown in the Division 1 league final last Friday evening!!

It was a tight, tough affair in challenging conditions with only one point dividing the teams at half time. But the Garrycastle GAA ladies dug deep in the second half. They fought to the bitter end and were victorious on the night. Congratulations to all the players and management!

Caisleán an Gharraí Abú!

The senior ladies would like to wish Ailish Mannion and Cliodhna Murtagh the very best of luck as they head abroad for college. Best wishes to both girls and safe travels.

Under-16 Girls Championship (Div. 1)

Caulry vs Garrycastle

Garrycastle u16s travelled to Caulry last week for the first round of the Division 1 championship. This was both sides’ first time to play in the top tier of the championship and they put on an excellent contest with Caulry just coming out on top by a two point margin.

The Garrycastle girls led by the minimum at the first water break thanks to points from Róisín Murphy, Ella Dowling (2) and Arlene Devery. The second quarter saw Garrycastle add to their tally with further points from Ella Dowling, Róisín Murphy and then Hazel Donegan but a Caulry goal just before half time left the the home side leading on a scoreline of 1-05 to 0-7.

The third quarter was the key to the final outcome. Garrycastle did keep the scoreboard ticking over with points from Ella Dowling, Tegan Foley and Hazel Donegan but despite some excellent defending by the Garrycastle backs under a lot of pressure Caulry had pulled into a six point lead by the second water break with the help of two very well worked goals and some very nice points. Garrycastle had it all to do in the final quarter particularly when Caulry extended their lead with the next score but they responded with great grit and determination. Jessica Frawley spearheaded the comeback from midfield while Tegan Foley played a captain’s part in the comeback with two goals and a point, which were added to by an Ella Dowling shot that went just over. However, thanks to some great last ditch Caulry defending and some excellent goalkeeping Garrycastle just could not bridge the gap. The final whistle blew with Garrycastle in possession in their own half but time had run out on them.

This was a performance though from which the girls can take a lot of encouragement.

Garrycastle Squad: Gemma Duffy, Kaleigh Clyne, Emma Connaughton, Orlaith Lynch, Amy McGovern, Jasmine Molloy, Aislinn Kelly, Arlene Devery, Tegan Foley, Jessica Frawley, Hazel Donegan, Róisín Murphy, Ella Dowling, Sally Joyce, Moya McKiernan, Nessa McNamara, Meliagh McDonagh, Katelyn Byrne, Cadhla Kelly and Eve Murphy.

Under-14 Girls Championship (Div.3) [19 August 2021]

Garrycastle 5-08, Goldsmith Girls 3-06

The under 14s got their championship campaign off to the best possible start with a hard fought win over a very good Goldsmith Girls side.

Goldsmiths were much the better team in the first quarter and they really should have enjoyed a comfortable lead at the end of it but they just couldn’t take their chances and the sides went into the first water break at level pegging 0-4 to 1-1 with Hazel Donegan and Sally Joyce getting the Garrycastle points. A few positional switches saw Garrycastle tighten up a lot in the second quarter and a Sally Joyce goal put the home team ahead but a late Goldsmiths rally saw them a point up at half time 2-3 to 1-5.

Garrycastle struggled against the breeze in the third quarter but again Goldsmiths were struggling to convert their chances until a goal and a point just before the second water break put them four points up 3-5 to 1-6. At this stage, a Garrycastle win looked very unlikely but they were a team transformed in the last quarter and they played some great attacking football with Hazel Donegan driving through from midfield to score four goals and adding two lovely points for good measure.

The eight point margin at the end was very harsh on Goldsmiths who left regretting the chances they missed particularly in the early stages. Hazel Donegan was the star player for Garrycastle but she was followed closely by Lily Mulvihill who was rock solid all through at right half back, while there were other good performances from Sally Joyce, Eve Murphy, Roisin Ni Chluaid, and the Kelly twins, Aisling and Cadhla. Amelie Henson put in a superb fourth quarter as did Mandisa Ni Chluaid. There is plenty though for Garrycastle to work on and they know they will need to improve in the rest of their round robin games if they are to make the final.

Garrycastle squad: Siobhan Ni Chluaid, Roberta Narmantaite, Matilda Parker, Isabella Hogan, Lily Mulvihill, Aisling Kelly, Roisin Ni Chluaid, Hazel Donegan, Cadhla Kelly, Eve Murphy, Sally Joyce, Amelie Henson, Chanelle Nestor, Mandisa Ni Chluaid, Tanya Stephane, Kayah Mierzwa, Marcella Santos, Emma Blagriff, LaraEllen Keena, Andrea Doran, Mairead McBride, Libby McHugh.

Ladies league (Div. 3) [22 July 2021]

Just 24 hours after the Division 1 game, many of the same players were on duty and down a few regulars. This time the Division 3 side took on Caulry. This was a fast game despite the intense heat with lots of scores and Garrycastle were leading at the break. It was a tight encounter until the second half of the game when perhaps the second successive game took its toll on Garrycastle with Caulry taking the win.

Get well wishes and a speedy recovery to all those who picked up injuries – hope to see you all back on the playing field soon.

Under-14 Girls [14 July 2021]

Athlone were deserving winners of an enjoyable encounter in Pairc Chiarain last week.

Garrycastle rode their luck a bit in the first quarter which ended level at 1-2 apiece but the game was decided in the next fifteen minutes which was dominated by the home side who scored four unanswered goals to go in at the break leading 5-3 to 1-2.

Garrycastle tightened up at the back after half time but Athlone continued to press home their advantage scoring an unanswered goal and two points to put the result beyond doubt going into the last quarter. In fairness to Garrycastle, they were the better side in the last fifteen minutes with their forwards finally managing to find a bit of space against a very well organised defence and they put over some lovely points and scored three well worked goals to leave a fairer look on the scoreboard at full time.

Overall, Garrycastle had a good league campaign with three wins from their five games, and they can look forward to the championship in August with a bit of confidence.

Garrycastle Squad: Siobhan Ni Chluaid, Rebecca Sleator, Matilda Parker, Isabella Hogan, Lily Mulvihill, Aislinn Kelly, Roisin Ni Chluaid, Hazel Donegan (4-0), Cadhla Kelly, Eve Murphy, Sally Joyce (0-4), Hannah Murray, Chanelle Nestor, Lucy Kearney (0-2), Tanya Stephane.

Ladies League (Div 1) [8 July 2021]

Garrycastle 4-06 Tyrrellspass: 2-03

Our Division 1 side took Tyrrellspass in a home game in the second round of the league having beaten St Marys in Round 1. The team lined out minus all county players involved in the county championship at the weekend and from the off the team were on form for a tough and challenging encounter. With heavy showers underfoot conditions were very slippy and made ball handling very difficult. Despite this the Garrycastle girls made the most of possession and worked the ball well out of defence and through midfield into the forwards who took their chances well. The game was played at a fast pace with very good end to end football with some great defending. This paid off and resulted in a well deserved win for Garrycastle.

Garrycastle: Megan McCormack, Sarah Carter, Laura Brennan, Donna Molloy, Orla Connaughton, Fionnuala Mulroy, Sarah Lough, Lisa Fitzpatrick, Trish Igoe, Aimee Duncan , Niamh Dooley, Sarah Denby, Shannon Mullvihill, Stephanie O’Neill, Aoife Dolan, Nicole O Connor, Orla Mc Getrick, AilishMannion, Faye Hanniffy.

Ladies League (Div 3) [9 July 2021]

Garrycastle 3-09 St Josephs: 2-11

Just 24 hours after the Division 1 game, many of the same players were on duty again in this Division 3 game against St Josephs played in Maryland. This proved to be a very exciting encounter with Garrycastle behind by 6 points at the break and then taking the lead in the closing minutes, when St Josephs managed a goal in the dying seconds to win by the minimum. Despite the loss, this was a very strong Garrycastle performance and particular praise to those that played full games in both matches. Well done to our younger players with this being the debut at adult level for some players. Next week sees this side take on Mullingar at home on Friday night at 8pm.

Garrycastle: Cliodhna Murtagh, Faye Hanniffy, Sarah Carter, Donna Molloy, Sarah Lough, Fionnuala Mulroy, Rebecca Norris, Trish Igoe, Orla McGetrick, Nicole O’Connor, Emily Ruane, Ailish Mannion, Sarah Denby, Aoife Dolan, Stephanie O’Neill, Aimee Duncan, Rosin Murphy, Erica Lowe, Elaine McGovern, Eimear O’Neill, Sarah Kelly.

Under 14 Girls [10 July 2021]

Garrycastle 4-07, Athlone 7-08

Our u14 girls were in hard luck yesterday evening in their last group game of the league where our neighbours Athlone deservedly won out the game with a final score of 7-8 to 4-7.

Athlone seemed sharper all over the field in the first 3 quarters although the Garrycastle girls played some really great football in the last quarter which saw them coming back and fighting hard.

While they lost out on the night, these girls all still have smiles on their faces as they can be very happy with their league campaign, finishing with 3 wins from 5 games. This is a young squad with lots of potential for the future, 27 of the 31 girls will still be u14 again next year. Well done to this great group of players and their management team.

Under 12 Girls [6 July 2021]

Garrycastle U12 girls hosted 2 teams from their neighbour's Athlone in terrible conditions on Tuesday.

Two very closely fought encounters ended with 1 win for each team. Credit must be given to both teams for the football they played in the terrible conditions.

There are sure to be many more great games between these sides in the future. Garrycastle's next outing at u12s is against St Lomans in Mullingar on Tuesday.

Garrycastle Squad:- Hollie Barclay Heneghan, Leah Berrigan, Nina Briedova, Hannah Browne, Jane Byrne, Amy Carter, Sarah Condon, Rionagh Costello, Niamh Doyle, Lily Duffy, Alanna Gaffey, Hannah Ganly, Eirinn Gaynor, Aisling Gormley, Isabelle Kearney, Jola Kearney, Doireann Keena, Lara Ellen Keena McDaid, Tammy Maguire, Amy McDonnell, Erin McHugh , Libby McHugh, Sophie McNamara, Alex Murphy, Sarah Murray, Nicole Nally, Katie Newman, Ellen Parker, Leticia Santos, Rebecca Sleator, Ella Sweeney, Orla Turner, Aoife McHugh.

Under 14 Girls [1 July 2021]

Garrycastle 7-13, Cill Óige 6-05

The u14 girls made it 3 wins in a row after a good display against Cill Oige Ladies on Thursday evening. Despite the aid of a strong breeze Garrycastle got off to a terrible start with the concession of two very early goals but they responded well and held a convincing lead at half time.

Cill Oige fought back well in the second half particularly in the last 10 minutes but Garrycastle ran out deserved winners on a scoreline of 7-13 to 6-5.

A number of girls deserve mention on the Garrycastle side with Hazel Donegan, Hannah Murray, Tanya Stephane and Sally Joyce doing very well in the first half, and keeper Siobhan Ni Chluaid making some great saves, but the Kelly twins, Aislinn and Cadhla, along with Eve Murphy were probably the outstanding performers on the day. Andrea Doran also made a very encouraging return to the squad after injury.

Garrycastle Squad: Siobhan Ni Chluaid, Roberta Narmantaite, Matilda Parker, Isabella Hogan, Lily Mulvihill, Aislinn Kelly, Roisin Ni Chluaid, Hazel Donegan (3-2, 1-0 pen, 0-1f ), Cadhla Kelly (1-0), Eve Murphy, Sally Joyce (1-4), Hannah Murray (1-3), Chanelle Nestor, Tanya Stephane (1-1), Megan Doyle, Ella Sherringham-McDermott (0-1), Emma Blagriff, Rebecca Sleator, Ella Rose McAuley, Amy Cox, Sandra Poplawska, Mairead McBride, Andrea Doran, Kayah Mierzwa (0-1).

Under 16 Girls [29 June 2021]

The under 16 girls had a deserved but workmanlike win against a tough Cill Óige side in the league last Tuesday. There were some good performances around the pitch with Kacey Mulvihill and Jessica Frawley in particular doing very well but it was the younger members of the squad who did most to secure the points with Hazel Donegan finishing top scorer, both Kelly sisters good in defence and Sally Joyce pitching in with a goal and a point in her debut at this age group.

Garrycastle: Ella Dowling (1-0), Kaleigh Clyne, Orlaith Lynch, Emma Connaghton, Jasmine Molloy, Amy McGovern, Jessica Frawley, Arlene Devery (0-1), Roisin Murphy, Kacey Mulvihill (1-4), Orla Barry, Hazel Donegan (2-1), Moya McKiernan (1-01), Meliagh McDonagh, Katelyn Byrne, Aislinn Kelly, Cadhla Kelly, Lucy Kearney, Sally Joyce (1-1) and Eve Murphy.

Ladies League (Div 1) [1 July 2021]

GARRYCASTLE 2-08 St Mary's Rochfortbridge 2-06

Our senior ladies team had a great win over St Mary's Rochfortbridge in the first round of the Division 1 league last Thursday night in Rochfortbridge. It was a great overall team performance from the Garrycastle girls with some excellent team work and effort all over the pitch. The Garrycastle girls led for most of the game seeing off a late rally from the Bridge girls finishing off the game with the final score 2-08 to 2-06. They face Tyrellspass in the second round next Thursday night in Garrycastle.

Under 14 Girls [28 June 2021]

Garrycastle 5-13 Moate All Whites 2-07

This was a closer game than the scoreline suggests. Moate were unlucky with a few goal chances in the second half but the Garrycastle girls played very well in all parts of the pitch. Well done to all the players on the evening for a great game of football and to both management teams.

Garrycastle team and scorers: Siobhan Ni Chluaid, Rebecca Sleator, Matilda Parker, Isabella Hogan, Lily Mulvihill, Aislinn Kelly, Roisin Ni Chluaid, Hazel Donegan (2-7), Cadhla Kelly, Eve Murphy (0-1), Sally Joyce (3-2), Hannah Ni Chluaid (0-1), Chanelle Nestor, Lucy Kearney, Tanya Stephane (0-1).

Subs (all used): LaraEllen Keena, Ella Sherringham-McDermott (0-1), Amy Cox, Roberta Narmantaite, Sandra Poplawska, Ella Rose McAuley, Hannah Ganly, Kayah Mierzwa, Liane Duffy, Mairead McBride, Emma Blagriff.

Under 16 Girls [15 June 2021]

The under 16 girls put in an excellent performance against Goldsmith Girls in their second outing in the league last Tuesday. Garrycastle got off to a blistering start and scoring three goals in the first 10 minutes. Goldsmiths settled and responded with a couple of points, but another Garrycastle goal left the score 4-0 to 0-3 at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter saw another exchange of goals and points with Garrycastle going in at the break ahead on a very unusual score of 6-0 to 0-5.

The second half was a much more one sided affair with Garrycastle upping their work rate even further and they were now adding points to their total with a string of impressive scores coming from the forwards and midfield.

The final whistle saw a comprehensive margin of victory for Garrycastle but great credit must be given to the opposition who continued to battle to the end and will have plenty of better days ahead. This was an all round team performance from Garrycastle with every player really upping their performance after a disappointing outing a week earlier. The defence dealt very well with a strong Goldsmiths attack with Jasmine Molloy and Emma Connaughton particularly impressive while stand in keepers Ella Dowling and Kaleigh Clyne were both very good between the posts with Ella getting some great scores during her second half spell at full forward. Tegan Foley and Jessica Frawley were dominant at midfield as the game went on while Hazel Donegan, Roisin Murphy and Kacey Mulvihill were prolific in a fluent Garrycastle forward line. But this was a day when every player probably deserved a mention for her display.

Garrycastle: Ella Dowling (2-02), Kaleigh Clyne, Orlaith Lynch, Emma Connaghton(0-1), Jasmine Molloy, Amy McGovern, Jessica Frawley, Tegan Foley (2-02), Arlene Devery, Roisin Murphy (3-0), Kacey Mulvihill (1-01) Orla Barry, Hazel Donegan (3-03),Moya McKiernan, Nessa McNamara and Meliagh McDonagh.

Under 14 Girls [17 June 2021]

Goldsmith Girls 5-05 Garrycastle 5-09

A real game of two halves here with Garrycastle overcoming a nine point half time deficit to come away from Tang with a memorable win after a very enjoyable encounter. Goldsmiths had the benefit of the stiffish breeze in the first half and they took advantage with a couple of early goals to lead 2-2 to 0-1 at the first water break. Garrycastle were playing well but were showing their inexperience at times and were unable to take advantage of some good attacking positions. The second quarter saw Goldsmiths continue to cause problems for the Garrycastle defence with their direct running and they were unlucky not to come away with more scores while at the other end Garrycastle were starting to find their range and they were able to keep just about in touch at half time trailing 4-3 to 1-3.

The second half was a very different affair with Garrycastle tightening up considerably at the back, with the Kelly twins, Aisling and Cadhla particularly prominent, along with corner backs Rebecca Sleator and Isabella Hogan, and they started to dominate with Goldsmiths having no answer to their driving play with Hazel Donegan leading the way in a superb individual performance, and getting great support in midfield from Eve Murphy and Amelie Henson. Hannah Murray and Megan Doyle were linking up well on the left side of attack while wing backs Lily Mulvihill and Roisin Ni Chluaid were clearing their lines well. Three goals from Hazel Donegan and some classy points from the same player and Sallyann Joyce saw Garrycastle eventually get on level terms midway through the final quarter. After some great opportunities were missed, Garrycastle finally got their noses in front when Chantelle Nestor finished to the net after a goalmouth scramble. The last few minutes were frantic with Goldsmiths making a huge effort to get an equalising goal, with the woodwork, some great goalkeeping from Siobhan Ni Chluaid and then an incredible goal line clearance from Cadhla Kelly keeping the lead intact. There was still time for player of the match Hazel Donegan to get the insurance point as Garrycastle completed an unlikely but well deserved win against very game opponents. Apart from the girls already mentioned every Garrycastle player deserves great credit for playing their part in a battling and energetic team performance.

Garrycastle Squad: LaraEllen Keena, Rebecca Sleator, Aislinn Kelly, Isabella Hogan, Eve Murphy, Cadhla Kelly, Lily Mulvihill, Hazel Donegan (4-5), Chantelle Nestor (1-0), Tanya Stephane, Sallyann Joyce (0-3), Amelie Henson, Marcella Santos, Siobhan NI Chluaid, Emma Blagriff, Megan Doyle, Hannah Murray, Roisin Ni Chluaid, Liane Duffy, Ella Sherringham.

Under 16 Girls [8 June 2021]

The U16 girls travelled to Caulry in their first league outing on Tuesday evening. Unfortunately a rusty looking Garrycastle did not get the start they wanted, and they were outclassed by a better, more physical side. The Garrycastle girls had a great start with a goal scored by Ella Dowling within the first minute. However, this was followed by a Caulry goal and three points all within the first 10 minutes. The game continued end to end with a second Caulry goal followed immediately by a goal scored by Kacey Mulvihill. A Roisin Murphy point was followed by another two goals and a point from the Caulry girls. Caulry were now dominating but Garrycastle put in a rally towards the the end of the first half with a goal scored by Moya McKiernan and a further 3 points from Tegan Foley, Ella Dowling and Roisin Murphy. Goalkeeper Katelyn Byrne in her first outing for Garrycastle made a fantastic save to see Caulry leading 7-5 to 4-3 at half time.

The second half was dominated by excellent Caulry play and apart from two further points scored by Kacey Mulvihill and a neat goal from Roisin Murphy there was no real threat from Garrycastle although they do deserve credit for battling to the very end. Best throughout for the losing side were Emma Connaughton, Amy McGovern, Kacey Mulvihill and Roisin Murphy, while Orla Barry enjoyed a very good opening half.

Garrycastle: Katelyn Byrne, Orlaith Lynch, Emma Connaghton, Kayleigh Clyne, Arlene Devery, Jasmine Molloy, Amy McGovern, Tegan Foley (0-1), Jessica Frawley, Nessa McNamara, Roisin Murphy (2-1), Kacey Mulvihill (1-2), Meliagh McDonagh, Moya McKiernan (1-0), Ella Dowling (1-1), Orla Barry, Aislinn Kelly and Cadhla Kelly.

Under 14 Girls [10 June 2021]

Garrycastle under 14 girls had no answer for a very good Caulry side in their first league match on Thursday evening.

Apart from a very competitive first five minutes and a good Garrycastle spell in the third quarter, Caulry were the better side throughout all over the field, with their skill and ability to move the ball quickly matched by their intensity and determination to win the ball, and after struggling to convert their chances early on they eventually put up the large score that their performance deserved.

However, this is a very young Garrycastle squad with all but one of the 25 players on duty eligible for this age group again next year and with no less than 10 players playing in their first match, and they did show good battling qualities throughout. Siobhan Ni Chluaid made some excellent saves in the first half, while Roberta Narmantaite, Aislinn Kelly and Isabella Hogan defended well, as did Matilda Parker after being switched into full back for the second half. Sallyann Joyce, Eve Murphy and Hannah Murray were the pick of the attack, while Amelie Henson made a big impact when introduced.

Garrycastle Squad: Siobhan Ni Chluaid, Roberta Narmantaite, Aislinn Kelly, Isabella Hogan, Cadhla Kelly, Chantelle Nestor, Tanya Stephane, Matilda Parker, Sallyann Joyce, Eve Murphy, Mandisa Ni Chluaid, Hannah Murray, Liane Duffy, Emma Blagriff, Mairead McBride, Amy Cox, Ella Rose McAuley, Megan Doyle, Lily Mulvihill, Sandra Poplawska, Roisin Ni Chluaid, Marcella Santos, Kayah Mierzwa, Amelie Henson, LaraEllen Keena.

Under 12 Girls [8 June 2021]

The U12 girls got their first taste of action this week, hosting Caulry on Tuesday evening. There was some great footballing skills on show and the girls gave a good account of themselves against a very good side, and showed that they will be a very hard team to break down this season. In the end they came out winners.

Some great performances by Amy Carter, Libby McHugh and Alex Murphy helped the girls to victory.

Garrycastle Squad: Lara Ellen, Doireann, Orla, Amy, Libby, Rebecca, Jola, Amelie, Hannah, Ella, Sarah, Rionagh, Alex, Sophie, Hollie, Katie, Lily, Nicole, Tammy.
