The Garrycastle u16 team will march on into the semi-final of the division II championship after a hard fought and well deserved 2-16 to 4-09 win over Athlone on Monday evening.

Despite arguably being the better team, Garrycastle went in at half-time three points down due to the concession of two very soft goals just before the whistle. Athlone came out of the blocks very strong at the start of the second half and built a healthy 8 point lead at one point. However, the tides began turning for Garrycastle when the midfield pairing of Tommy Stephens and Daniel McManus got on top of their opposite numbers and helped to create some well worked team scores to chip away at Athlone’s strong advantage. A well taken goal from the determined Ben Kilkenny brought the men in green and red back to within 2 points and it was all to play for entering the final stages.

During this resurgence, Garrycastle’s defence stood strong and witheld a number of dangerous breakaway attacks. A fantastic reaction save by Eric Rogers helped to steady Athlone’s previous scoring dominance and ensured that a comeback would remain on the cards.

And remain on the cards it certainly did, as Garrycastle’s dominance in the middle of the field and under the breaking ball proved too much for Athlone and the boys drove on with some terrific scores, most notably from Cathal Redmond and Tommy Stephens.

Garrycastle showed great belief and determination in grinding out this hard fought win. They now head into their semi-final after being greatly tested and confident in the knowledge that they passed this test.
