Garrycastle qualified for a quarter final meeting with Athlone in this one sided contest played in Tang on Sunday evening last. They started without the injured Ger Henaghan and John Gaffey and with Dessie Dolan in the starting fifteen after being declared fit. After an early fright, when county player Kieran Martin ran through the Garrycastle defence in the first minute to open the scoring with a goal, Garrycastle settled and put 1-4 on the board in less than 10 minutes, with James Dolan goaling. Then a rare Maryland attack ended with a penalty which they converted. Shortly after Alex Gardiner netted after a ball came off the post. James Dolan added another goal in the 22nd minute after receiving a pass from Dessie Dolan and before halftime another 8 points were added to Maryland’s two. An Alex Gardiner goal was disallowed for a square ball. The halftime score was 3-12 to 2-2.

Playing against the wind in the second half didn’t slow the Garrycastle rate scoring much. Tom O'Halloran’s penalty crashed off the crossbar in the 5th minute  and over the bar. Substitute Jason Nugent added the fourth goal in the 45th minute after a good run. Eight more points were added during the second half. The Garrycastle management ran in their allocation of substitutes during the second half. Two Maryland players received red cards during that second half which added to their difficulties.

From Garrycastle ‘s point of view it was a job done and top place in the division acquired. The movement of the team was impressive resulting in many good scores.  However, the ease with which Maryland scored two goals in the first half will give management plenty to work on.
