In the first round of this year’s league Garrycastle defeated Castledaly in Castledaly on Sunday last. On a pitch which was surprisingly good despite all the recent snow the Garrycastle  dominated for most of the game. In the early stages Garrycastle  built up a 5 points to 2 lead through points from the evergreen Dessie Dolan (3), James Sheeran and Aidan Browne. Then on a rare attack Castledaly opened up the Garrycastle  defence to level with a goal. At this stage of the game the Garrycastle  defence looked vulnerable every time Castledaly attacked and only good saves from goalkeeper Shane McHenry kept them at bay. But the points kept coming for Garrycastle with Cathal Mannion,  Dessie Dolan (2), Michael Monaghan, substitute Jason Nugent and James Sheeran bringing halftime total to 0-11 to Castledaly’s  1.3.

The start of the second half saw Castledaly in complete control for five minutes kicking five wides during that period. Garrycastle  gradually gained control again and points from Dessie Dolan (2) and Cathal Mannion increased the lead before 2 goals from James Sheeran within a minute ended the game as a contest. The first goal came after good work by newcomer, Jason Nugent, and the second goal was a brilliantly worked team move. A tendency to go for goals when points seemed a better option cost Garrycastle some scores. A blot on the day was a red card for Mathew Guiheen for an off the ball incident. However, it was a satisfactory performance for the first game of the season and hopefully can be built on as the season goes on.
