GARRYCASTLE 2-11    MOATE ALL WHITES 0-9

Garrycastle minors journeyed to Moate last Wednesday evening determined to continue their good start to the league campaign. They showed their intent early on with points from Jack O’Connor and Jason Nugent. Jason Nugent added his second point to stretch the lead further. Moate AW got off the mark with a point from a close range free soon after. Jason Nugent then stepped up to fire over a point from a free awarded after a foul on the same player. Moate AW added their second point from a free in the 15th minute. In their next attack Garrycastle raised a green flag, as Jason Nugent was on the end of a good move to find the Moate net. Jack O’Connor then added his second point to give Garrycastle a nice cushion by the 20th minute. However, Moate AW were not going to lie down and added two points, both from frees, in the remaining time to leave it 1-5 to 0-4 at the break.

Just as in the first period, it was Garrycastle who made the better start on the resumption of play. Eoin Mulvihill broke forward from his defensive duties to stroke over a point. Further points from Jason Nugent and Dylan Keegan gave Garrycastle a seven point cushion by the 38th minute. Moate AW hit back with two quick fire points, their first scores from open play. However, a second Garrycastle goal in the 46th minute, which came as a Colm Lynch shot for a point fell short and deceived the Moate goalkeeper and dipped into the net at the angle of crossbar and post.  The sides exchanged points, the Garrycastle effort by Dylan Keegan from a free. Jason Nugent then added a point from a free but Moate AW responded with a pointed free of their own. Brian Ruane got Garrycastle’s last score, a fine point from distance, and the scoring was completed by Moate AW with a good point in added time to leave the final score 2-11 to 0-9 in Garrycastle’s favour.

This was good performance from the lads, but they will have to improve and make better use of their scoring chances if they are to challenge strongly for the league. The defence was solid throughout and only conceded four scores from open play throughout the hour, with Cillian Lyons, Shane Duffy, Colm Lynch and Eoin Mulvihill to the fore. Brian Ruane and Andrew Monaghan gave Garrycastle the edge in midfield and provided a good supply to the forwards. Jason Nugent was top scorer but Jack O’Connor and Dylan Keegan also helped to keep the scoreboard ticking over. However, Garrycastle will need to make better use of the numerous scoring opportunities they created in the bigger challenges to come.
