Garrycastle  3-13  Athlone 0-9

Three first half goals virtually decided this final round league game of the season in favour of Garrycastle. Played on a perfect evening for football in Garrycastle, Athlone started the stronger with an early point before James Sheeran fisted the ball to the net, after a high ball by Cathal Mannion,  for the first of Garrycastle ‘s goals.  Athlone’s tactic of crowding the midfield  was succeeding in stifling many of Garrycastle  early attacks. The next stage of the game saw Garrycastle  outscore Athlone by 4 points to 2, Garrycastle ‘s points all coming from frees by Conor Cosgrove (3) and Dessie Dolan (1). A good Garrycastle  move ended with Tom O’Halloran beating the Athlone goalie with an angled shot. Another high ball troubled the Athlone defence resulting in Conor Cosgrove scrambling the ball to the net. A good Eoin Monaghan point finished the scoring leaving the halftime score 3-6 to 0-4.

On the resumption Garrycastle  continued their dominance with a Cathal Mannion point. John Gaffey  added another after a rare sally up the field. Gary McCallon got the first of his two points before Eoin Monaghan, Dessie Dolan, Mathew Guiheen and Gary McCallon added points for the home side.   Athlone added 5 points to their tally. Mark Keenan brought off an excellent save on the only occasion that Athlone breached the Garrycastle  defence. The defence in general  was solid with John Gaffey  outstanding and Gary McCallon adding an attacking dimension. The midfield more than held their own and in attack the high ball created difficulty for the Athlone defence. This result leaves Garrycastle  in the league final against St Lomans.
