Athlone 4-11      Garrycastle 1-5

 

Garrycastle got their league campaign off to a start against our near neighbours, Athlone, last Monday night in Garrycastle. It was the visitors who made the better start and had a point on the board within the first minute of play. Athone doubled their lead soon after but Garrycastle registered a point from a free by Philip Monaghan in the 6th minute. Athlone enjoyed more possession and got the first goal of the game in the 10th minute following some hesitant defending by Garycastle. Athlone registered two further goals in quick succession to lead by 3-1 to 0-1 by the mid-point of the half. The visitors added three points in the next period before Philip Monaghan got his and Garrycastle’s second point from a free. Cathal Mannion added a point from play almost immediately and this was added to by a point from open play by Conor Macken in Garrycastle’s best period of the opening half. Matthew McBride prevented a goal with a fine save at the expense of a 45. However, in their next attack Athlone broke through for a fourth goal to leave it 4-5 to 0-4 at the break.

 

Athlone rattled off three points in the opening 5 minutes of the second half to stretch their lead even further. Garrycastle had an improved performance and began to create some scoring opportunities. Cathal Mannion goaled from the penalty spot in the 37th minute. Matthew McBride brought off a number of important saves but Athlone did get through for a number of points. Garrycastle pressed forward and were rewarded with a point from Philip Monaghan to leave it 4-11 to 1-5 at the end.

 

There were some good performances from Garrycastle, despite the one sided score-line.Mathew McBride, Sean Mulvihill, Caolan Jameson and Bill Kelly tried their best. Philip Monaghan, Ross Mulvihill impressed with limited possession.
