TYRRELLSPASS 1-12         GARRYCASTLE 1-8

Garrycastle’s championship aspirations are hanging on by a thread after their second defeat within a week, as they lost out to Tyrrellspass in Cusack Park last Saturday evening.

Tyrrellspass were quickly out of the blocks and raced into a three point lead within the first few minutes. Garrycastle hit back in style when a slick build up left Eoin Monaghan in on goal and he finished coolly to raise a green flag. His brother Michael put the green and red into the lead with a point in their next attack. Tyrrellspass levelled with a point from play and in the 10th minute jumped into the lead when the Referee awarded a penalty for a foot block against Neil Rattigan, which earned him a yellow card. Tyrrellspass converted the penalty to lead by three points. Tyrrellspass then added a point from open play. Garrycastle had a period of possession and added points from a free by Alex Gardiner and from play by Matthew Guiheen to reduce the margin to two points by the 20th minute. However, it was Tyrrellspas who had the final score of the half, a point in the first minute of added time to lead by 1-6 to 1-3 at the break.

Both Sean Brennan and James Duignan were introduced on the resumption. However, it was Tyrrellspas who made an impression on the scoreboard with a point from play and one from a free.  Garrycastle began to exert some pressure and two points from Eoin Monaghan, the first of which came from a free, reduced the gap. James Duignan then pointed after a cleverly taken free from Eoin Monaghan. The gap was down to just a point in the 54th minute as James Dolan hit over a lovely point from distance. However, it was Tyrrellspass who finished strongly and Dennis Glennon had a big influence on the scoreboard in the final minutes with three points in a row.  Eoin Monaghan pointed for Garrycastle as time ran out but Tyrrellspass had the final score, a fisted point from Dennis Glennon to win out on a score line of 1-12 to 1-8. Gary Dolan was given a red card in injury time for a high challenge on a Tyrrellspass defender.

There were good performances from John Gaffey, Aidan Browne and Eoin Monaghan. However, too many Garrycastle players were finding it hard to make an impression throughout the game. A very big improvement will be necessary, along with favourable results elsewhere, if Garrycastle are to have any say in the knock-out stages of this year’s championship.
