ST MALACHYS 0-17          GARRYCASTLE 1-11

Garrycastle felt the loss of county players, Dessie Dolan and Doron Harte, when going down to St Malachys in the second round of the senior championship in sunny Moate last Sunday evening.

St Malachys had a score within 30 seconds to take the lead but some good play by Garrycastle saw them forge into the lead with points from Eoin Monaghan and Alex Gardiner getting two. It could have even been better, but a couple of descent goal opportunities were wasted in the opening 10 minutes.  St Malachys regained the lead with a pointed free and two from open play by the 13th minute.  They extended their lead further with a point but Alex Gardiner responded for Garycastle. Two more pointes were added by St Malachys to stretch their lead to 3 points. However, points from Alex Gardiner, James Duignan and James Dolan had Garrycastle level by the 29th minute. However, Garrycastle allowed St Malachys in for two further points in the last minute of the half and again in added time, to leave it 0-9 to 0-7 at the break.

Garrycastle introduced Michael Monaghan and Matthew Guiheen for the start of the second period and it seem to lift the side. St Malachys had the first point but Michael Monaghan responded with one for Garrycastle immediately. A goal for Garrycastle put them ahead, when Alex Gardiner was quickest to react as the ball broke loose in the St Malachys defence. The same player added a point from a free to increase the Garrycastle lead to 2 points by the 38th minute. However, to their credit St Malachys reacted in style to this setback and had a string of 4 points, one coming from a free and the others from open play, to lead again. A pointed free from James Dolan reduced the gap to one. The sides exchanged points, the Garycastle effort coming from James Dolan. But it was St Malachys who pushed on and added two further points to lead by 3 as time ran out. Substitute, Gary Dolan, came closest to saving the day for Garrycastle but his shot hit the crossbar and rebounded to safety.

St Malachys were worthy winners of this tie and Garrycastle will have to show considerable improvement next Saturday when they take on Tyrrellspass in the 3rd round. There were good performances from John Gaffey, Mark McCallon and Gary McCallon in defence. St Malachys were on top in midfield and won most of the breaking ball in that sector. This was James Dolan and Alex Gardiner were prominent in attack. Substitutes, Michael Monaghan and Matthew Guiheen play well on their introduction.
