CORALSTOWN/KINNEGAD 1-5, GARRYCASTLE 1-18

Garrycastle had an impressive win over Coralstown/Kinnegad on Friday evening in Kinnegad in their first outing in this year’s Junior championship. The home side were quickest off the mark and caught the Garrycastle defence napping with a goal within the first minute which left Junior championship debutant Shane McEnery with no chance. This score was added to by the home side and by the fourth minute when Garrycastle opened their account, the score stood at 1-2 to 0-1.

Garrycastle then took a grip of the game and dominated for the remainder of the first half with Robbie Shine contributing three frees and with good scores from Paul Gunning, Jonny Maguire, and Enda Keena they took the lead by the 20th minute.

Conor Cosgrove then added to the score with two superb long distance points. The home side contributed the last score of the half to leave the half time score 0-9 to 1-2 to the visitors.

The second half followed a similar pattern to the first half with the visitors contributing two points in a row to reduce the margin to the minimum. This was a critical period in the game where the home side were in a position to take control of the game and put the visitors under pressure. Garrycastle rallied and again it was two converted frees from Robbie Shine which helped settle the side. A further point from Paul Gunning and one from Peader Mulvihill put the visitors back in control. In the 54th minute Conor Cosgrove went through for a goal and his first shot was well parried by the keeper, he collected the rebound but was brought down by the keeper in the small square. Robbie Shine converted the resultant penalty with some style. Garrycastle were rampant at this stage in the game and produced four more points with good play from midfielders Jonny Maguire and Noel Galvin as well as Mark Curley who laid on a pass for Peader Mulvihill to score and then got his own score to close out the game for the visitors.

This was a fine team performance from the Garrycastle lads with solid contributions from all concerned and seven players contributing scores.
