GARRYCASTLE 1-14 THE DOWNS 0-13

Round 2 of the senior championship saw our seniors pitted against The Downs in Moate on Wednesday evening last. After an eventful hour’s football our boys came out on top by four points. The wind was favouring Garrycastle in the first half but despite this the first 10 points scored were shared equally and after 15 minutes it was 0-5 each. Each side were able to breech their opponents defence with almost every possession. It was only at this point that Garrycastle crept 2 points ahead. With the score at 0-8 to 0-6 after 29 minutes the crucial score of the game arrived when James Dolan came in at the end of a series of clever passes to finish to the net. A further point by the Downs left the halftime  score 1-8  to 0-7.

Facing the wind in the second half Garrycastle still had a lot of work to do against tricky opponents.  After 7 minutes of the half and with 5 points between the sides Mathew Guiheen got two yellow cards in the space of a minute and subsequent marching orders. He was unlucky in that he was out of position, getting the card, when the referee allowed the play to re-start and committed the foul that earned him the second yellow. From here to the end it was a backs to the wall battle performance by our lads. Despite the numerical advantage the Downs were only able to reduce the lead by one.

The workrate of the Garrycastle boys was very good with better tackling and good turnovers. Management used the bench to good effect bringing in fresh legs and effectively matching their opponents all over the field. In fairness to the Downs they never gave up and it took a smart save by Sean Brennan  in the last minute to keep a clean sheet. This was a solid performance by the team and it was good to see them rise to the challenge when they had to. While there were many good performances Tom O'Halloran and Justin Barrett deserve special mention as both had very very good hour’s football, putting in vital tackles and both scoring two points each. The next round is against Tyrellspass in Cusack Park on Sunday next at 7.30pm.
