Garrycastle 1-09  The Downs 2-14

Garrycastle ‘s run in the junior championship came to an abrupt end on Thursday night last under lights in Tubberclair when they lost comprehensively to the Downs. Having a strong wind in the first half Garrycastle needed to assert themselves on the score board early on but instead after 10 minutes they were a point behind, 0-2 to 0-1. Soon after with the score at 0-2 each a high ball into the Garrycastle goalmouth hopped on the bar and the breaking ball was finished to the net. The Garrycastle play was disjointed with players making untypical mistakes. With the score at 1-4 to 0-3 a quick free found John O’Brien who netted. With renewed hope Garrycastle began to play better and finished the half level at 1-6 each. In the 28th minute of the half a Downs player got a 2nd yellow followed by a red card.

In the early stages of the second half, with the wind on their backs, the Downs opened a two point lead. After 10 minutes of the half the referee was called to an off the ball incident which resulted in a red card for Paul Gunning. Garrycastle fought on bravely and midway through the half there was only a point between the sides. But this was as good as it got for the Garrycastle side as the Downs increased their lead with 4 points and then a goal well into a long period of added time.

Throughout the game Garrycastle struggled to create good scoring chances while their opponents were able to get their scores more easily. Late in the game the unfortunate Kenny Dolan, who’s is only a short time back after a long injury layoff went down after contesting a ball and was carried off with what looked a serious leg injury. We all wish him a speedy recovery.
