Garrycastle welcomed the Division 3 leaders, the Moate All-Whites to Garrycastle on Sunday morning. On a fine morning for football with little or no wind, it was the visitors who started the brightest, forcing the Garrycastle goalkeeper Mark Keenan into a great early save to stop a certain goal. The visitors had most of the play in the first quarter hour, but only had two points to show for it, one from a free, before Robbie Shine opened the Garrycastle account with a pointed free in the 12th minute following a foul on Kenny Dolan.

The teams then traded points, the Garrycastle effort a hard-earned score from Jason Nugent after some good lead-up play by Bryan McCormack. The visitors were on top by this stage in defence and midfield, and found the net in the 21st minute when one of their half-backs was allowed a free run and finished smartly. Garrycastle responded immediately with a point from Kenny Dolan, but Moate then struck for a goal and four points as half-time approached widening their lead. The first half action ended with a pointed close-in free from Robbie.

At the break, Garrycastle trailed on a scoreline of 2-07 to 0-04. The Garrycastle midfield was struggling to handle a strong Moate running game, and the Garrycastle forwards were having to drop very deep in search of possession.

The expected push from Garrycastle at the start of the second-half did not materialise, and it was the visitors who opened the scoring with two points from play, the first a rebounded effort, following another excellent save by Mark to deny a goal. Garrycastle responded with a pointed free from Bryan McCormack following a foul on Jason Nugent, but any hopes the home team had of getting a result were killed off when the visitors scored their third goal on the 40-minute mark.

An inspirational point from Eoin Mulvihill who was involved in the move from start to finish gave a lift to the home side, but a string of Moate points showed them stretching their lead as the game entered the last 10 minutes. Andrew Monaghan knocked over a point for the home side, but again Mark Keenan was called into action, with another excellent close-in save denying the visitors. As the final whistle neared, Jason knocked over a point for Garrycastle, but it was the visitors who closed out the scoring to take a deserved win.

Overall, this was a patchy performance by the home team. Garrycastle struggled with the Moate runners coming from deep, and gave up possession too easily when in the Moate third of the field.
