Under 16 League

Garrycastle under 16s continued their good form with 2 league victories in one week. The first game against neighbours Athlone was a very exciting affair played in slippery conditions. After a bright start where we built up an early lead through scores from Charlie O Connor and Ben Kilkenny our lads seemed to take the foot of the gas and allowed Athlone back into the game. This left the game level at half time with Garrycastle playing into the breeze for the second period.

Garrycastle rose to the challenge and the second half display was much better. The game was end to end and both sides led at different periods with Garrycastle’s best scores coming from expertly finished goals from Luke Clinton  and Tommy Stephens. Trailing by 2 points heading into the last 5 minutes Garrycastle needed to show all their character and were rewarded for their efforts when after a goal mouth scramble Tommy Stpehens was on hand to raise the green flag. The defence, excellently marshalled by Cian Dowling, Cathal Redmond and John Dylan O Shea withstood some late Athlone pressure and the Castle held on for a narrow victory. Athlone 2-08 Garrycastle 3-06

On Friday the boys were back in action this time away to Lilliput Gaels.  In what was a high scoring game played in warm conditions Garrycastle came out on top on a scoreline  of 5-15 to 4-8.  Eric Rogers again done an excellent job in goals saving a penalty at  a crucial time when the game was tight.  Daniel McManus competed very well in midfield giving us the platform to push on the get the scores needed.  Overall a great few weeks for the under 16s who now have a break in fixtures for the Junior cert.
