Garrycastle  4-8  Athlone 2-14

The Garrycastle lads showed great character to came back from a 4 point deficit in the last few minutes to earn a well deserved draw. It was a see saw game in which both sides dominated at times. Playing with a strong wind Athlone dominated the early stages and built up a six point lead after 20 minutes. During the last 10 minutes of the half Garrycastle  began to move the ball well and more than matched their opponents. The halftime score was 1-8 to 1-2, Garrycastle ’s goal coming from Robbie Shine. On the resumption Athlone increased the lead to seven before Garrycastle  got going again. Goals from Paul ODonovan, and Paul Mulvihill as well as three points put Garrycastle  ahead 3-6 to 1-10. However the tide turned again with Athlone scoring 1-3 between the 18th and 23rd minutes. But back came Garrycastle  again and an exquisite lob by Robbie Shine, put the sides level again. An Athlone point in the 30th minute looked like the winner until a last Garrycastle  attack yielded a good point by Bill Kelly. This was a great gutsy performance by Garrycastle  with every player giving it his all.
