TUBBERCLAIR 3-10    GARRYCASTLE 1-10

Garrycastle suffered yet another defeat in their final group game in the Division 1 and 2 championship in Tubberclair last Monday evening. Garrycastle started brightly and attacked right from the off. A couple of points from Joe Carmody had his side ahead in the opening minutes before the home side responded with a point. Garrycastle added two more points, with Joe Carmody and Jason Nugent scoring for the boys in green and red. The game then swung in favour of the home side and four points from play and one from a free to lead by two points as the game approached the half time whistle. A couple of great saves by the Garrycastle goalkeeper, Patrick McKiernan, denied the home side what looked like certain goals during this period. However, he could do nothing to stop a goal in the 29th minute when a strong shot was saved yet again but broke loose to an in-rushing forward to fine the net for Tubberclair. And leave them ahead by 1-7 to 0-4 at the break.

The second half started with Garrycastle on the front foot and two points from Joe Carmody reduced the margin. However, a quick fire gaol and a point from the home side increased their advantage by the 37th minute. Points from Joe Carmody and Brian Ruane gave Garrycastle renewed hope and was soon added to with a goal from Jason Nugent. A second yellow card saw the home side reduced to 14 with about 15 minutes remaining. However, it was the home side who responded with renewed vigour to this setback and score a goal and two points without reply to lead by 3-10 to 1-8 as the game entered its final minutes. Garrycastle did press forward and were rewarded with two points from Joe Carmody, one from play and one from a close range free to leave it 3-10 to 1-10 at the end.

Garrycastle did not play to their potential in this game, except for short periods at the start of each half and in the closing staged. If the lads can show a bit more composure when in possession and better decision making when under pressure they can resurrect their year and look forward to competing in the division 2 championship in the coming period. Best for Garrycastle on the night were Patrick McKiernan, Matias O’Neill, Shane Duffy, Oisin Langan, Andrew Monaghan, and top scorer Joe Carmody.

GARRYCASTLE: Patrick McKiernan , Robert Kelly, Matias O’Neill, Jack Fitzgerald, Colm Lynch, Shane Duffy, Conor Macken, Oisin Langan, Andrew Monaghan, Jack O’Connor, Jason Nugent, Brian Ruane (0-1), Ian Carroll, Joe Carmody (0-8 1f), Dara Mulvihill.

SUBS: Matthew McBride for Patrick McKiernan (43 min); Eoghan Kenny for I Carroll (43 min).
