Under 14 League

Garrycastle under 14s recorded a great victory over neighbours Athlone last Thursday evening in their final league game in Páirc Chiaráin. Played in slippery conditions after heavy rainfall both teams served up an entertaining game.

Garrycastle responded to a bright start from Athlone through some excellent scores from Luke Clinton and Corey Nugent after well worked moves. Garrycastle stretched their lead coming up to half time with goals from the excellent Charlie O’Connor and Nathan Breslin. A particular highlight of the half was some super long range points from Daniel McManus, Tommy Stephens and captain Diarmuid Carey. The second half was somewhat of a low scoring affair. However, Garrycastle added a further goal and points to put the seal on the victory. A super save from Eric Rogers kept a good move from Athlone at bay.

Overall this was a very good performance from the lads and showed what this team is capable of. Eric Rogers was excellent again in goal and is improving with every game. The back 6 of John Dylan, Nathaniel, James, Cathal, Diarmuid and Ryan were commanding all night. Our two midfielders Tommy and Daniel ran their hearts out as always and were equally adept both defending and attacking. The forward line of Sean, Ben, Corey, Charlie, Nathan and Luke  took their scores excellently and with a little better decision making could possibly have had more scores. The introduction of Peter, Stephen and Adam added more life to the team when legs were tiring and Garrycastle ran out winners.
This concludes a good league campaign for Garrycastle with wins over Athlone, Moate and Milmore being the highlights. Near misses against the league’s top sides were unfortunate but it bodes well for championship.

Well done to all and keep up the hard work.
