The seniors kept alive their championship hopes with a clear win over Maryland in Tang last Sunday. Garrycastle had first use of the strong wind but scores were at a premium early on. A Conor Cosgrove point got them off the mark only for Maryland to equalise soon afterwards. Garrycastle then hit four unanswered points from Robbie Shine (two frees), Rory McGowan and Johnny McGuire but in the closing minutes of the half there were three pointed frees, one from Conor Cosgrove and two for Maryland. This left Garrycastle with a tenuous 0-6 to 0-3 lead as they turned over to face the wind.
Dessie Dolan came on at half time for his first appearance in this year’s championship and quickly made his presence felt with a neat point. Mark McCallon extended the lead to five points before Maryland had their only point of the half from a free. Garrycastle withstood some sustained pressure before Conor Cosgrove latched onto a breaking ball for the game’s first goal. This gave his team some breathing space and seemed to knock Maryland’s confidence, and a second goal by Alex Gardiner put the result beyond any doubt. Late points from Conor Cosgrove (free) and James Dolan put the seal on this important win.
When news came through after the game that Castledaly had beaten The Downs the Garrycastle players knew that their season was still alive and they can face into the three-way play-off with some confidence.
