Garrycastle minors will be slightly disappointed to go down in their first outing of the year against Shannon Gaels, (a combination of Tubberclair, Tang and Maryland), in Tubberclair last Thursday. With ten minutes to go there was just a point between the teams but a strong finish from Shannon Gaels saw them deserved winners by eight points. A strong start from Garrycastle went unrewarded with Bill Kelly, Cathal Mannion and Colm Lynch linking up well to create chances which were spurned. Although points from Kelly, Brian Ruane and Lynch kept Garrycastle in the game, at the other end Shannon Gaels were way more economical with their chances, leaving Garrycastle frustrated to be 1-8 to 0-5 down at half time.
Garrycastle started the second half very well with Eoin Mulvihill, Bill Kelly and Conor Mulvihill becoming more prominent around the middle and the impressive Colm Lynch linking with Jack O’Connor to get 1-2, to set up an exciting finish. However, Shannon Gaels dominated the closing stages and a well-taken goal sealed Garrycastle’s fate. This was a decent game for the time of year and Garrycastle will find a lot of positives, particularly their workrate, with a few players out injured. Best for Garrycastle was Colm Lynch.
