The Garrycastle Minor’s lost out to Shannon Gaels in the first round of this years Minor Championship in Tubberclair on Wednesday night. The Garrycastle team got off to a slow start, and soon found themselves a couple of points behind to a hungrier Shannon Gaels side. They eventually opened their account with a point from Colm Lynch, following a quick free from Bill Kelly. However, the home team added a number of points in succession to lead by 6 points at the quarter hour mark. The Garrycastle team were guilty of squandering some good chances for play and frees, and kicked no fewer than eight wides in the same period.
As the game entered the second quarter, Garrycastle finally started to put scores on the board, scoring four points in a row from Philip Monahan (one from play, and one free), Conor Macken and Brian Ruane) to narrow the gap. Garrycastle were very much in charge during this period, but the wides count also steadily increased, and this was to come back to haunt the Garrycastle team, as half-time approached, when they got caught with a classic counter-attack to leave the score Shannon Gaels 1-7, Garrycastle 0-5 at the break.
Both teams traded points at the start of the second half, with the Garrycastle score coming from Eoin Mulvihill. The home team were then awarded a penalty after a goalmouth scramble, and duly scored to leave the Garrycastle team with an uphill struggle to get a result. Instead, it was the home team who pushed on to take a comfortable win in the end. To their credit, the Garrycastle lads did not stop trying, and hit the post or crossbar no less than three times in the closing quarter, but only had a single point from Colm Lynch to show for their efforts.
