With two defeats behind them, a win on Friday night was essential to remain in contention for a place in the knock-out stages so the game in Tubberclair was a must-win fixture.
The home team started brighter with two points but Robbie Shine kept Garrycastle in touch with his first three points. Approaching half-time, Garrycastle trailed by a point but a quick 1-2 without reply gave them a lead of 1-6 to 0-5 at the break. Another scoring burst early in the second half brought points from Cathal Mannion and three from the unerring boot of Robbie Shine which put daylight between the teams. Two quick goals from Shine and Frank Farrell put the game beyond Tubberclair and Garrycastle added a succession of points to leave them winners by 3-16 to 0-6.
Best performances on the night came from Tom McHugh, Frank Farrell, John O’Shaughnessy, Rory McGowan, Cathal Mannion and Robbie Shine.
Garrycastle: Shane McEnery, Gary Mullery, Tom McHugh, Bill Kelly, Frank Farrell (1-1), John O’Shaughnessy, Alan Fox, Rory McGowan (0-1), Seanie O’Donoghue, Cathal Mannion (0-3), Noel Galvin, Enda Keena (0-1), Peadar Mulvihill, Robbie Shine (1-8, 3 frees), Paul Mulvihill (1-0).
Subs: Robbie Fox (0-1) for McGowan (injured), Brian McCormack (0-1) for Keena, Stephen McGuire for Alan Fox, Ross Mulvihill for Paul Mulvihill, Ben Kennedy for Mullery and Conor Duignan for Shine.
Note: It was good to see Stephen McGuire back in action after several months out with injury, while Shane McEnery and Cathal Mannion showed great commitment to their club by lining out in the middle of their Leaving Certificate examination.
