The second team recorded a one-point win over Milltown in Garrycastle on Tuesday of last week. This was a lively game played in ideal conditions and the sides were evenly matched in the first quarter until a converted penalty by Conor Cosgrove gave Garrycastle the edge, and they led by 1-4 to 0-4 at half time.

Unfortunately, by that stage Garrycastle had lost midfielder Justin Barrett who had to retire injured after a very heavy tackle. We wish Justin a speedy recovery.

Garrycastle stretched their lead after the break and a well-worked goal finished by Cosgrove after good work by Alex Gardiner gave them a seven-point lead. However, Garrycastle were reduced to 14 men soon after when Johnny McGuire got a red card for retaliation, while his aggressor was fortunate to escape without any sanction. When the visitors got through for a goal and added a few points to equalise they seemed in pole position but spirited defending by Garrycastle kept the teams level until Alex Gardiner kicked the winning point from a late free to give his team a deserved victory.

GARRYCASTLE: Shane McEnery, Anthony Larkin, Tom McHugh, Alan Fox, Neill Rattigan, Seanie O’Donoghue, Frank Farrell, Justin Barrett, Rory McGowan (0-1), Johnny McGuire, Damien Rushe, Enda Keena, Noel Galvin, Conor Cosgrove (2-1, 1 penalty, 1 free), Alex Gardiner (0-5, frees).

Subs: Sean Brennan for Barrett (injured), Cathal Mannion for Galvin; Paul Mulvihill for Rushe.
