Garrycastle 1-9          Athlone 0-9

The senior team collected two hard-earned points from this visit to Páirc Chiaráin last Sunday evening. The game had originally been fixed for the previous Tuesday but was postponed as a mark of respect to former Athlone player Dermot McManus and a minute’s silence was impeccably observed before the throw-in. Garrycastle had wind advantage but it was Athlone that started the brighter, scoring two early points. However, the home team suffered a set-back when their key forward John Connellan had to retire injured. Garrycastle eventually found some rhythm and a well-taken goal by Tom O’Halloran helped them to lead by 1-6 to 0-4 at half time. Athlone had more of the play in the second half but found scoring difficult and relied for the most part on frees. The closest they got to Garrycastle was three points but two excellent second half points from Rory McGowan proved crucial as Garrycastle hung on for a three-point win.

Team: Sean Brennan, Neill Rattigan, John Gaffey, Jack Donohue, Mark Curley, Doron Harte, Gary McCallon (0-1), Justin Barrett, James Dolan, Eoin Monaghan, Damien Rushe, Matthew Guiheen, Conor Cosgrove (0-4, 1 free, 1 45), Rory McGowan (0-4), Tom O’Halloran (1-0).

Subs: Johnny McGuire for Rushe, Michael Monaghan for O’Halloran, Ciarán O’Neill for McGuire (injured).
