Caulry 2-11        Garrycastle 2-9

The Under 21’s lost out to the home team in this entertaining game played in Mount Temple last Saturday. The first quarter was evenly contested before Garrycastle hit three points in a row to lead by 0-5 to 0-2. In that period of ascendancy Garrycastle missed two good goal opportunities but Caulry were less wasteful and in the last ten minutes of the half they scored a goal and pointed two frees as well as a “45”, to lead by 1-6 to 0-6 at the break. Garrycastle enjoyed another good spell on the restart and should have had more than two points to show for their dominance. Caulry hit back with four unanswered points from frees, and another pointed “45”. They seemed to have an unassailable lead when they goaled from a swift counter-attack after Paul Gunning was unlucky not to win a free at the other end. With an eight point lead the game looked all over but Garrycastle launched a spirited rally, with subs Ross Mulvihill and Conor Duignan very much involved. A long delivery was well fielded by Eric Kearney who put Frank Farrell through for a clinical finish to the net. Straight from the kick-out Farrell was again involved, initiating a quick attack involving several players leaving Cathal Mannion free to tap home a second goal as injury time approached. However, to the consternation of Garrycastle and to Caulry’s relief the final whistle sounded on the kick-out without any additional time allowed.

Garrycastle will be disappointed with this defeat but should take a number of positives from their display. They were up against a very talented Caulry team who are capable of doing very well in this competition. All but three of the Garrycastle players are eligible again next year and several of the younger players acquitted themselves admirably, especially Dara Hayden, Bill Kelly and Frank Farrell, while Michael Monaghan showed his outstanding quality, shooting five excellent points from open play.

Garrycastle: Mark Keenan, Darragh Brody, Ben Kennedy, Cian Hayden, Terry Rushe, Mark Curley, Bill Kelly, Justin Barrett, Eric Kearney (0-1), Evan Dalton, Cathal Mannion (1-1, 1 free), Michael Monaghan (0-6, 1 free), Frank Farrell (1-0), Paul Gunning, Kenny Dolan (0-1, free).

Subs: Sean Gunning for Brody (35 mins), Ross Mulvihill for Dalton (44 mins), Conor Duignan for Kennedy (55 mins) and Mark Denby for Kelly (55 mins).
