Garrycastle Under 14 team put in a great performance in the Under 14 Blitz held in Ballinagore on Saturday last, 4th April.

Garrycastle were in a very strong group which included the amalgamation of Rosemount/Castledaly, Mullingar Shamrock’s And Lilliput Gaels.

The first match for Garrycastle was against the Rosemount/Castledaly amalgamation. Despite Garrycastle being short a number of players from their panel the team that took the field gave it their all throughout and at the end of their first match only a goal in the last minute deprived them of a victory and in the end they shared the spoils on a scoreline of Garrycastle 3-0 to Rosemount/Castledaly 2-3.

The team had no break going into their second game against Lilliput Gaels and despite their best efforts they had to give way to a much stronger opposition and ended up losing to Lilliput Gaels. The lads put up a creditable performance against eventual winners Mullingar Shamrock’s in their last game and the management was very pleased with the performance of the team on the day.

In goals Michael Dooley made some fantastic saves throughout the three games and made an excellent penalty save as well. In the full back line Robert O Brien was solid throughout and was well helped by Ryan Cornally and Cian Dowling who intercepted the ball on numerous occasions. The half back line of Cathal Redmond, Dylan Keegan and Under 12 player John Dillon cut out numerous  attacks with their excellent defending and supported the forwards in all matches. The midfield pairing of Fergal Mullin and Daniel Guinan covered every blade of grass on the field and worked hard both attacking and defending. The half forward line of James Murphy, Daniel Mc Manus and Tommy Stephens showed well for the ball  and worked very hard throughout the three games. The full forward line of Jason Mannion, Under 12 player Ben Kilkenny, Luke Clinton and Saumil Sharma gave it their all and two great goals from Ben Kilkenny in the Rosemount/Castledaly game shows he is the makings of a fine footballer in the future.

Overall this team has great potential to do well in the league and championship if they continue to show the dedication and commitment that they have shown so far this season.
