Garrycastle 3-15  Tubberclair 3-06

The Under 14s have been plagued all summer with an extensive injury list and other absences.  This match was probably the closest management have come to fielding a full strength team.  The game which was played in Tubberclair saw a much improved overall team performance from the Garrycastle players who fully deserved what was a hard-earned but comprehensive victory in the end.  Garrycastle led 0-12 to 0-3 at half time having played with the aid of a fresh breeze.  The half was marked by some excellent long range point taking from the likes of Dylan Keegan, Andrew Monaghan, Fergal Mullin and Daragh Kenna while Nathan Breslin was a constant threat in the full forward line where he received good support from James Murphy and the pacey Luke Clinton.  Jason Collins Mannion put in a very positive shift from right half forward and set up several good moves.  Chances were at a premium at the other end where full back Ryan Cornally and centre half back Daniel Guinan were dominant but Michael Dooley still had to make an excellent save after an incisive Tubberclair attack.   With Keegan and Monaghan continuing to take charge in the middle of the field, Garrycastle dominated possession in the first five minutes of the second half but they failed to put the game to bed with a number of shots drifting wide or falling short into the stiff breeze.  Gradually Tubberclair started to enjoy some sustained pressure of their own and a couple of goals in quick succession midway through the half saw the gap narrow to an uncomfortable four points.  However, whereas in previous matches Garrycastle had no substitutes to call upon it was the bench on this occasion which came to the rescue with the fresh legs of Nathaniel O’Neill, Corey Nugent and Neil Costello making a difference.  Goals from Nathan Breslin and Corey Nugent steadied the ship and after Fergal Mullin added another following some excellent build up play Garrycastle were able to see out the last period of the match in comfort.   As well as those already mentioned there were very solid performances in the full back line from Cian Dowling and Joseph Henson while both Robert O’Brien and Cathal Redmond were always on top on the flanks against a number of different opponents.  The only dampener on the night was a nasty injury sustained in an accidental collision by one of Tubberclair’s most prominent players, Neil Kenny.  The Garrycastle players and management wish him a speedy return to action.

Garrycastle squad on the night was:  Michael Dooley, Cian Dowling, Ryan Cornally, Joseph Henson, Robert O’Brien, Daniel Guinan, Cathal Redmond, Andrew Monaghan, Dylan Keegan, Jason Collins Mannion, Daragh Kenna, Luke Clinton, James Murphy, Fearghal Mullin, Nathan Breslin, Nathaniel O’Neill Neil Costello, Corey Nugent, Daniel McManus (not used, inj.).
