The Garrycastle Under-10 squad headed off to Miltownpass on Tuesday evening for round-8 of this years county under-10 league, which was played as a blitz evening, with Garrycastle playing the hosts, Shandonagh and Coralstown/Kinnegad in three rounds of matches. Garrycastle were short players on the evening, so we only fielded 1 team.
In the first round of matches, Garrycastle faced the hosts, Miltownpass. A great game of football was served up by two well matched teams. Some great play by the Garrycastle lads saw them create numerous attempts in the first half, but poor shot choices, and some great goalkeeping by the Miltownpass goalie, meant the teams were level at half-time. Garrycastle introduced all their substitutes for the start of the second half and traded score for score with Miltownpass, and could not pull away. The game ended in a well-deserved draw for both teams.
The second game against Shandonagh started well for the Garrycastle lads, and they soon drew into a comfortable lead coming up to the half-time mark. Some great performances all over the field, with Jamie Carroll and Brian Mulvihill in the middle of the field, catching the eye. Again, all the substitutes were introduced at halftime, and even though Shandonagh tried hard to get back into the game, there was no way past the Garrycastle backline, and the Garrycastle squad extended their lead to win confortably in the end.
In the final match of the evening, Garrycastle played against Coralstown/Kinnegad. After a bright start, the Garrycastle lads left in a few scores just before the break to allow Coralstown/Kinnegad take a slender lead. The second half, with Garrycastle now playing downhill, was a very evenly contested affair, with the teams trading points evenly. However, some poor wides, as legs tired, meant that we could not close the gap and Coralstown/Kinnegad ran out winners in the end.
Overall, a great evenings football from the Garrycastle squad, With very depleted numbers, playing just one team meant that everyone present played at least one half of every match.
