CAULRY 7-06, GARRYCASTLE 3-08

The Under 16’s, short a number of players due to injuries etc., travelled to Caulry for the Division 2 Quarter final.

Philip Monaghan opened the scoring for Garrycastle with a well taken point following some very good build up play from Ian Carroll, who had a very good first half along with Colm Henry. Shortly afterwards Mattie McBride made a couple of good early saves, but Caulry did hit the net with 2 quick fire goals after 10 minutes play. The lads rallied well and scored 2 points from the boot of Jack O’ Connor leaving the score 2-0 to 0-3 after 20 minutes. However, the final 10 minutes of the half proved disastrous for Garrycastle conceding a further 2-04 without replay leaving the half time score 4-04 to 0-03.

The first 10 minutes of the second half didn’t prove much better with Caulry scoring 1-02 with only a Jack O’Connor point in reply. Mattie McBride made a great save which seemed to spark the lads into life. After a quick break up the pitch, Jack O’Connor scored a point and shortly afterwards Brian Ruane expertly converted a penalty. Garrycastle won a second penalty but the Caulry keeper guessed right this time and made a great save. Jack O’Connor scored a further 2 points, before some excellent work from Cillian Lyons set up Jack O’Connor for a second Garrycastle goal. Jack added another point reducing the gap further.

Cillian Lyons was having a fantastic second half, along with Eoin Mulvihill, Conor Macken, Robert Kelly and Mattias O’Neill in defence while Brian Ruane, Andrew Monaghan, Dylan Keegan and Oisin Langan were getting a foothold around the middle, with Philip Monaghan proving to be a great link between defence and attack. Pat McKiernan won a kick out and delivered a pin point pass to Philip Monaghan who was very unlucky to hit the post with a great shot from distance. Caulry steadied the ship with a goal and a point before Jack O’Connor scored his second goal of the day.

While it was a disappointing result the lads showed great heart and determination with their second half performance, none more so than Jack O’Connor who finished the game with 2-07, closely followed by Cillian Lyons, Eoin Mulvihill, Oisin Langan, Philip Monaghan and Brian Ruane.

We’d like to thank under 14’s Daniel Guinan, Cathal Redmond, Andrew Monaghan and Dylan Keegan who helped us out on the night and all made significant contributions. We would also like to say thanks to all the lads for all their efforts and dedication throughout the year.
