Garrycastle 2-18     St. Malachy’s 1-7

The seniors got back on the winning trail on Wednesday last in Páirc Chiaráin with a comprehensive defeat of St. Malachy’s. Taking control from the start, Garrycastle kicked five quick points from play, all well executed by Michael Monaghan (3), Gary McCallon and Conor Cosgrove. Almost inevitably, the first goal arrived when James Dolan finished a good move to the net, and further points followed from Dessie Dolan (2), Matthew Guiheen, Michael Monaghan and James Dolan, with Malachy’s only response coming from three pointed frees. Close to half time Conor Cosgrove fired home the second goal just after Malachy’s had converted a penalty at the other end, to leave Garrycastle in front by 2-10 to 1-3 at half time. Not surprisingly, some of the urgency went out of Garrycastle’s play in the second half, and they seemed content to pop over the occasional point against a tightly-packed defence. There were good scores from Conor Cosgrove (3), Eoin Monaghan (2), Michael Monaghan and Gary McCallon in response to four points from Malachy’s, and Cosgrove added another on the stroke of full time from a sweetly-struck “45”, after Garrycastle had introduced a number of substitutes.

Overall, this was a decent performance but the players will know that tougher tests lie ahead.
