Garrycastle 2-11    The Downs 0-08

The seniors opened the defence of their championship crown with a nine point win over The Downs in Cusack Park last Sunday evening. It was a patchy performance by the champions, who dominated the first half despite playing into a strong wind and yet somehow found themselves behind by 0-4 to 0-3 at the break. The Downs had the better of the third quarter and stretched their lead to four points before Garrycastle finally found their scoring touch. Justin Barrett set up Gary Dolan for the first goal and Aidan Browne put Matthew Guiheen on his way for a superb finish for the second goal which effectively ended the contest. While a lot of work clearly has to be done there were some positives to be taken from the game. Mark McCallon was the shining light in a solid defence where Doran Harte made a very welcome return after a year-long absence due to injury. The high fielding of both midfielders was a joy to watch, and while the forwards squandered several chances, there was much to admire in the powerful performance of Matthew Guiheen and the free-taking of Alex Gardiner. The return of Dessie Dolan and Eoin Monaghan will certainly strengthen this department.

GARRYCASTLE: Cathal Mullin, Mark McCallon, Jack Donohue, Alan Fox, Doran Harte, John Gaffey, Gary McCallon (0-1), Aidan Browne, Justin Barrett, Neill Rattigan, Gary Dolan (1-1), Matthew Guiheen (1-0), Conor Cosgrove, Alex Gardiner (0-6, 3 frees, 1 “45”), James Dolan (0-1).

Subs: Michael Monaghan (0-2) for Cosgrove (26 mins); Ciaran O’Neill for Rattigan (39 mins); Sean Brennan for G. Dolan (56 mins); Damien Rushe for Gardiner (61 mins).
