The Downs  1-4   Garrycastle 2-11

Garrycastle continued their successful Junior Championship campaign with a comprehensive victory  away to The Downs on Friday evening last.
With limited resources on the day, Garrycastle gave a very impressive display and if they maintain this form they will be genuine contenders for the Junior Title.
The away team got off to the better start and were two points ahead before Peader Mulvihill registered Garrycastle’s first point after some good inter play with Cathal Mannion. Anthony Larkin produced the next point which was quickly followed by another Peader Mulivill point to leave the visitors ahead after 10 minutes. It was a lead that Garrycastle never relinquished. The remainder of the first half  was a close fought contest but Garrycastle’s  superior defence including Goalkeeper Padraig Cosgrove pulling off an important save ensured that the home team were restricted and unable to add to their early tally. Three more points from Paul Gunning, Cathal Mannion (a free) and Paul Mulvihill put the visitors in a secure position at half time where they led on a scoreline of 0-6 to 0-2.
The second half started with the home team adding a point. Garrycastle then produced the first goal of the game when Kenny Dolan finished to the net after 33 minutes. The Downs responded well and were rewarded with a penalty two minutes later after some sloppy defensive play.  Garrycastle needed to respond quickly and they did so with further points from Enda Keena and Paul Gunning to leave the score at 1-8 to 1-5 midway through the second half.  Garrycastle continued to dominate and the control the game from there to the finish with further points from Cathal Mannion, Paul Gunning and Cian Hayden as well as a second goal for Kenny Dolan. The last score of the game came from the home team with a consolation point on the stroke of full time.
This was an excellent team performance with eight players contributing scores including all six starting forwards, great work rate from midfield, excellent driving play from the half backs and solid back line which got the reward they deserved.
