The Juniors pulled off a noteworthy win over championship favourites Mullingar Shamrocks in cold and windy conditions in Garrycastle last Friday. Playing with the wind in the first half Garrycastle were second best for much of the half and when they went in at the break trailing by 0-4 to 0-3 they appeared to be in deep trouble. Two early second-half points by Shamrocks seemed to confirm this view but an excellent point by Jonny McGuire lifted the home team. The game’s vital score came half way through the half when an effort from distance by Noel Galvin was caught in the swirling wind and fumbled by the Shamrocks goalkeeper. The energetic Cian Hayden was on hand to squeeze the rebound to the net from a tight angle, and Garrycastle were in front for the first time. Two very good points from play by Anthony Larkin and Noel Galvin gave them a three point cushion and late pressure from Shamrocks yielded just a pointed “45” as Garrycastle’s backs defended heroically.

This win should be a confidence booster to the players in their efforts to qualify for the play-off stages but continued improvement will be needed, especially in attack. The goalkeeper and all seven backs, including sub Bill Kelly, were solid all through, while Jonny McGuire and Mark Curley displayed abundant skill and energy at midfield. In attack Noel Galvin and Cian Hayden were most effective.
