Garrycastle 1-13   Tubberclair 1-11

The Juniors collected another two points from this home fixture against Tubberclair last Friday. Despite the win, it is difficult to find too many positives from this performance. The battling qualities displayed against Mullingar Shamrocks the previous week were seldom in evidence, and had the visitors not wasted so many opportunities from both frees and open play they would surely have annexed the two points. Garrycastle’s best moments came in the first half, at the end of which they led by 1-8 to 0-7, but even before half time they were losing their grip on the game, and had also lost Tom McHugh to injury. Tubberclair started the second half positively but then self-destructed when two of their full forward line were red-carded in separate incidents. Anthony Larkin was also sent off after picking up two yellow cards in those incidents, but Garrycastle still had a spare man and would have been expected to push on and close out the game. The loss of Jonny McGuire to injury was certainly a blow and Tubberclair increased their dominance around the middle and with sharper finishing they could have won the game. It was very deep into injury time before they managed their goal, but a Noel Galvin free in the last extra minute left the game safe for a relieved Garrycastle.

With most of the team under-performing, Garrycastle had reason to be grateful for the contributions of Mark Curley, Jonny McGuire (until injured), Cian Hayden and Paul Gunning, while subs Colman Gantley and Padraig Cosgrove both made a significant impact when introduced.

TEAM: Shane O’Connell, Gary Mullery, John O’Shaughnessy, Ben Kennedy, Tom McHugh, Mark Curley (0-1), Anthony Larkin, Noel Galvin (0-3, frees), Jonny McGuire, Cian Hayden, Cathal Mannion (0-3, 1 free), Enda Keena (0-1), Paul Gunning (0-3), Peadar Mulvihill, Paul Mulvihill (1-0).

Subs: Eric Kearney (0-1) for McHugh (injured, 19 mins); Colman Gantley for Kennedy (half time); Padraig Cosgrove (0-1) for McGuire (injured, 36 mins); Mark Keenan for Paul Mulvihill (68 mins).

We wish Tom McHugh and Jonny McGuire a speedy recovery from their injuries.
