Garrycastle failed to qualify for the knockout stages of the Junior B championship as they came up just short against Mullingar Shamrocks in a game that they needed to win. With depleted resources and with some players carrying injuries this was a brave performance under the circumstances.

Shamrocks were first off the mark and Garrycastle responded well in the early stages to lead by 3 points to 2 after 10 mins. However, two goals within a minute of each other, the first a powerful shot which gave goalkeeper Padraig Cosgrove no chance put the home team in the driving seat at the half way mark in the first half. Garrycastle were unfortunate not to score a goal when Robbie Shine saw his chance come back off the cross bar and eventually cleared. Garrycastle rallied and gradually increased their total to leave themselves just two points behind at the break on a score line of 2-3 to 0-7.

The second half got underway with a score for the home team but again Garrycastle responded well with three points without reply to level the match by the 35th minute. The loss of Robbie Fox to an injury half way through the 2nd half unsettled the Garrycastle defence and had an impact on Garrycastle’s performance for the remainder of the match. Shamrocks took the lead then went two points up with 7 minutes remaining. A point from Enda Keena in the final minute gave some hope but Garrycastle were unable to add to that score and Shamrocks ran out winners in the end by the smallest of margins.
