The Garrycastle Under-10 team journeyed to Johnstown to play Clann na nGael in the fourth round of this years Clann na nGael/Tormeys Solicitors league. Our numbers were somewhat depleted on the evening, but with the addition of some of our under-8 players, we were able to field 2 teams, one at under-10 level, and one at under-9 level.

In the Under-10 match, Garrycastle started strongly, and soon had some scores on the board from the industrious Thanh McCay and Diarmaid Murtagh. Some great football all around the pitch saw Garrycastle build out a decent lead mid way through the first half. As half-time approached, it was the home teams turn to apply the pressure, and at the break, the home team led by three points. As in the first half, Garrycastle started the second half strongly, and soon regained the lead with some great scores building on fantastic defensive work, with Sean Doyle impressing, and great midfield play, with Diarmaid, Brian Mulvihill and Jamie Carroll. From then to the end, the teams traded scores, but just as the game ended, the last Garrycastle attack was waved agonisingly wide by the referee, to leave Clann the victors by a single point.

This was an excellent game of football, with great skill and effort on display from both teams. From a Garrycastle viewpoint, some great defensive play, allied to a strong midfield performance, and some super score taking was a pleasure to behold.

In the Under-9 match, Garrycastle also started the stronger, and led all the way to the half-time break. The Clann team attacked strongly as the second half started, but some great play by the backline of Anthony Mannion, Kyle Greene and Andrew Henson kept the chances to a minimum, while at the other end of the field, the scoreboard was kept ticking over with some great scores from James McHugh, Aaron Keegan and Jack Allen. Garrycastle maintained their lead from start to finish in this game to take a well deserved win.

Overall, this was a good performance from both Garrycastle teams, with one win and one loss on the evening. However, with a little bit of luck, both games could have been won.
