St. Mary’s 3-4 Garrycastle 1-8

Garrycastle’s third team suffered a frustrating defeat at the hands of the local team in Rochfortbridge last Saturday. Playing against a strong wind Garrycastle had an ideal start when Darragh Brody showed great determination and composure to score a good goal. Scores were hard to come by in the tricky wind but Garrycastle still led by 1-1 to 0-1 as half time approached when a defensive error from a short kick-out let the home team in for a goal. They added a point to lead at the break but Garrycastle were still well positioned as they turned over with the elements in their favour. Two quick points after the break seems to be a good platform to build up a winning lead but the home team showed greater urgency and they regained the lead with a disputed goal. When they added a third goal and two points to lead by seven Garrycastle were in deep trouble. The introduction of Paul Gunning and Sean Carey signalled a good spell for Garrycastle and they gradually reduced the lead to two points before time ran out.

This was a disappointing result for Garrycastle but they will take encouragement from the displays of some of the younger players, and when fitness levels improve they are capable of a good run in this competition.
