Garrycastle travelled to Tyrrellspass for this re-arranged league fixture last Friday evening and had to settle for defeat by the slimmest of margins. Missing a few regulars through injury and holidays, the Garrycastle lads put up a spirited display and if they could have shown a bit more composure in good scoring position might well have come away with the points on offer.

The opening period was dominated by the home side and they has registered 3 points by the 12th minute. Philip Monaghan got Garrycastle’s first score, a point from a free, in the 12th minute. The same player then scored pointed from a free out on the side-line a few minutes later. Matthew McBride came to his side’s rescue with a fine save at the expense of a 45 when a goal looked certain for the home side. Two points for the home side before the break left them ahead by 0-5 to 0-2 at half time.

In a repeat of the first half pattern, Tyrrellspas made the better start to the second half and pointed from a free on the resumption. Matthew McBride again came to his side’s rescue with a very smart save. However, Tyrrellspass pointed soon after to increase their lead further. Two further points from open play put Tyrrellspass 0-8 to 0-2 ahead with 41 minutes played. This seemed to spur Garrycastle on and they stormed into the game. A pointed free from Oisin Langan reduced the gap and this was soon followed by the game’s first goal, when Jack O’Connor was on hand to punch to the net. In their next attack, Garrycastle had a point from play by Philip Monaghan. “Game on” with just a point between the sides with over 10 minutes remaining. It was end to end at this stage but Tyrrellspass hit over two quick fire points in the 53rd minute. Enda Malone pointed from a free after he was fouled, but Tyrrellspass responded with a point of their own. Bill Kelly broke forward from centre back to point with just two minutes remaining and leave just a point between them. However, try as they might the Garrycastle lads could not fashion an equalising point and lost out on a scoreline of 0-11 to 1-7.

This was a very spirited display by Garrycastle, despite the defeat. The full back line of Ross Mulvihill, Brian Leahy and Sean Mulvihill were excellent. Behind them goalkeeper, Matthew McBride, brought off a number of important saves and deserved to keep a clean sheet. There were also good periods from Bill Kelly and Brian Ruane in defence. Oisin Langan in midfield, Philip Monaghan and Jack O’Connor in attack also showed well.

This group, along with returning players, can now look forward with some confidence to the upcoming championship.

GARRYCASTLE: Matthew McBride, Ross Mulvihill, Brian Leahy, Sean Mulvihill, Jack Brody, Bill Kelly (0-1), Brian Ruane, Conor Mulvihill, Oisin Langan (0-1), Enda Malone (0-1, 1f), Colm Lynch, Philip Monaghan (0-4, 3f), Jason Nugent, Colm Henry and Jack O’Connor (1-0).
