Garrycastle made the journey to Springfield on Bank Holiday Monday but came away without any points in a game played in a downpour throughout most of the match.

The home side had a point on the board in their first attack, however, Garrycastle replied with a point from Colm Lynch. The home side dominated possession and hit over a succession of points to lead by seven mid-way through the half. Garrycastle did have couple of opportunities for goals but a combination of good defending and indecisive finishing yielded nothing. Garrycastle began to get a foothold in the game and a goal from Colm Lynch brought them right back into it. Points from Eoghan Kenny and Philip Monaghan added to their tally as the half time whistle approached. However, Garrycastle were hit by a body blow when Mullingar Shamrocks broke up field in injury time and goaled to leave it 1-8 to 1-3 at the break.

Conor Mulvihill pointed for Garrycastle on the resumption but Mullingar Shamrocks replied with yet another goal to stretch their lead further. A third Mullingar goal in the 39th minute all but settled the result and they added a point and two quick fire goals to move even further ahead by the mid-point of the half. Mullingar continued to dominate and added two points to their tally. Garrycastle rallied in the closing tem minutes and goals from Ross Mulvihill and Javiar Marrodian put a better gloss on the scoreboard. It could have been even more, as goal bound shots from Owen Mulvihill and Colm Lynch were brilliantly saved by the Mullingar goalie towards the end. Mullingar did add points in the closing minutes and ran out winners on a score-line of 5-13 to 3-4.

Despite defeat the Garrycastle lads showed great heart and fought back strongly towards the end of each half. However, they will need to start with more purpose and sustain their efforts throughout the entire hour. There were good performances from Brian Leahy, Caolan Jameson and Sean Mulvihill in defence. Cathal Mannion tried hard throughout. Owen Mulvihill, Colm Lynch and Javiar Marrodian caused many problems for the home defence.

GARRYCASTLE: Matthew McBride, Mark Denby, Brian Leahy, Caolan Jameson, Jack Brody, Oisin Langan, Sean Mulvihill, Conor Mulvihill (0-1), Cathal Mannion, Owen Mulvihill, Colm Lynch (1-1), Ross Mulvihill (1-0), Eoghan Kenny (0-1), Javiar Marodian (1-0) and Philip Monaghan (0-1).

SUBS: Gonzalo Garcia for Eoghan Kenny.
