The Garrycastle Under-8 squad headed off to Cusack Park on Monday evening, to take place in the latest round of County-organised blitzes, this time in conjunction with the Destination Sport initiative in Mullingar. This is a great opportunity for our younger players, as all clubs in the county take part, and we normally get to play against teams not usually encountered in South Westmeath. On perhaps the warmest evening of the year so far, Garrycastle fielded two teams, each playing two matches.

In the first round of matches, the Garrycastle Red and Green teams played their counterparts from The Downs. The Red team got off to a great start, and led their match from start to finish. The Green team had a tougher encounter, and after an enthralling game of football, the teams could not be separated, and the match finished all-square.

In the second round of matches, the Garrycastle Red team took on Rosemount, while the Green team played the second team from The Downs. In both games the Garrycastle team took the lead from the start, and finished the games strongly, taking the honours on the night, playing some lovely fluid football, and using the available space to good effect.

All in all, a very successful trip for this young squad. All players who attended played their part in both games, and can take great pride in their skill levels, and their sportsmanship. After the matches, all of the players got the opportunity to hoist the Flanagan trophy high from the presentation area, hopefully something they will replicate at many grades over the coming years.
