GARRYCASTLE 2-16          BUNBROSNA 2-11

The scoreline might suggest a close contest, however, a late flurry of scores from Bunbrosna made it closer that the play throughout the hour warranted. Garrycastle made an excellent start and points from James Dolan and Aidan Browne, followed by a goal from Eoin Monaghan established a five point lead within four minutes. James Duignan increased the gap with a point. Bunbrosna had their opening point from a free in the 9th minute and added a second, also from a free, soon after. Matthew Guiheen pointed for Garrycastle to stretch their advantage but Bunbrosna responded with a point. The sides exchanged points, the Garrycastle effort coming from Michael Monaghan. James Duignan stepped up to point a close range free but Bunbrosna responded with a good point from open play as half time approached. Seanie O’Donoghue had the final score of the half, a trade mark drop kick sailing over the bar, to leave it 1-7 to 0-5 at the break.

The opening ten minutes of the second half was all Garrycastle. They registered a goal from Michael Monaghan and added points from Eoin Monaghan, Alex Gardiner and a James Duignan free to stretch their lead even further. Bunbrosna hit back with a goal in the 43rd minute to reduce the gap. James Duignan pointed yet again from a placed ball and Alex Gardiner had a point from play. Substitute, Sean Brennan, then got into the scoring act, with a fine point. Bunbrosna rallied and hit over three points without reply in a short period. James Duignan pointed for Garrycastle but Bunbrosna responded with two points in quick succession. The sides exchanged points again, the Garrycastle score coming from Alex Gardiner. Bunbrosna pointed and then reduced the gap to just four points when they goaled in the 59th minute. Garrycastle had the last score, a fine effort from another substitute, Ciaran O’Neill in added time. The final score 2-16 to 2-11 in Garrycastle’s favour.

This was a much improved performance from Garrycastle when compared against recent showings, particularly in the first half. However, they will be concerned at the concession of so many scores in the final quarter of the game. There were good performances from John Gaffey, James Dolan and Seanie O’Donoghue in defence. Aidan Browne and David O’Shaughnessy were dominant in mid-field throughout. The Monaghan brothers and Alex Gardiner caused the Bunbrosna defence a lot of trouble throughout the game, while James Duignan was very accurate from placed balls.

GARRYCASTLE: Cathal Mullin, Mark McCallon (Capt), John Gaffey, Alan Fox, James Dolan (0-1), Seanie O’Donoghue (0-1), Gary McCallon, David O’Shaughnessy, Aidan Browne (0-1), Matthew Guiheen (0-1), Damian Rushe, James Duignan (0-5, 4f), Michael Monaghan (1-1), Alex Gardiner (0-3) and Eoin Monaghan (1-1).
