ST LOMANS 2-8                 GARRYCASTLE 0-6

Garrycastle Junior side went down to their first defeat in this year’s junior championship min Lakepoint Park last Friday evening. This was a very even contest in the first quarter, with the defences on top. The home side took the lead in the 4th minute with a point from play. It took Garrycastle all of 13 minutes to register their first point, a free from Robbie Shine after Johnny McGuire was fouled. St Lomans retook the lead son after and had increased their tally to 3 points by the 23rd minute. The home side scored an important goal in their next attack, as they opened up the Garrycastle defence and goaled. Garrycastle responded with a fine point from Johnny McGuire in the 25th minute. St Lomans had the last score of the first half, a point in the 30th minute, to lead by 1-4 to 0-2 at the break.

Needing to make a good impression on the resumption, Garrycastle upped their efforts and had a point from Enda Keena in the 35th minute. Despite some good possession, the Garrycastle attack failed to register other scores during this initial period of dominance. It was the home side who pressed on with a point from play and 3 points from frees to open up an 8 point advantage by the mid-point of the second period. St Lomans added a second goal in their next attack to all but seal the win. To their credit Garrycastle never gave up and indeed registered all of the game’s remaining scores in the final 13 minutes. Pointed frees from Robbie Shine and Conor Cosgrove, with one from play by substitute, Paul Gunning, providing a final score of 2-8 to 0-6 in St Loman’s favour. Full back, Gavin Ward, picked up a knee injury near the end, and hopefully it will not rule him out for the remaining games of the year.

This was a disappointing performance and result for Garrycastle. They will need to improve significantly if they are to feature in the knockout stages of the championship this year. It was the Garrycastle defence and midfield that featured most in this game, with good showings by Gary Mullery, Gavin Ward, Mark Curley, Johnny McGuire and Noel Galvin. The attack failed to make any real impression but Peadar Mulvihill worked tirelessly throughout to get them going.

GARRYCASTLE: Shane O’Connell, Gary Mullery, Gavin Ward, Ben Kennedy, Padraig Cosgrove, Mark Curley, Sean Carey, Johnny McGuire (0-1), Noel Galvin, Enda Keena (0-1), Conor Cosgrove (0-1, 1f), Peadar Mulvihill, Alan Daly, Robbie Shine (0-2, 2f) and Paul Mulvihill.

SUB: Paul Gunning (0-1) for Paul Mulvihill (36 min); Kenny Dolan for S Carey (40 min); Terry Rushe for R Shine (47 min); Adam Kennedy for P Cosgrove (52 min); Conor Molloy for E Keena (55 min) and Paul O’ Donovan for A Daly (55 min).
