This game was moved to Hogan Park as the Garrycastle pitch was unplayable. The games in this division are 13 a side, and it was just as well for Garrycastle as we only had 13 players available.

Moate AW had the aid of a strong breeze for the first period and had a point on the board after only 30 seconds. It was evident that this was the first game for the Garrycastle players and they were finding it very difficult to get any flow to their play. Moate AW continued to dominate the early exchanges and added six more points by the 16th minute to lead by seven. Garrycastle finally got off the mark with a good point from Peadar Mlvihill a minute later. This signalled a period of Garrycastle domination and they were rewarded with a goal shortly after when Noel Galvin was set up to score smartly. Moate AW responded with a point in the 20th minute but Robbie Shine was on target with a point from a close range free soon after. Moate AW had the last score of the first half to leave them ahead by 0-9 to 1-2 at the break.

On the restart Kevin Hogan was on target for Garrycastle but Moate AW responded with a good point from play. Moate AW extended their lead even further with a point from a free in the 44th minute. Garrycastle now had a large lead to whittle down, but they set about their task with renewed vigour. Three points from Kevin Hogan, all from frees, reduced the gap to just two points with 9 minutes to play. Moate AW attacked again and were rewarded with a point to push the lead up to 3 points again with just seven minutes left. A shot from Gavin Ward struck the Moate AW crossbar and rebounded to safety. Kevin Hogan pointed twice to leave the minimum between the sides as the final whistle approached. Sean Brennan levelled matters with just a minute remaining. The final score level on 1-9 to 0-12.

A draw was a fair result in the end. There were some excellent performances from Garrycastle. Anthony Larkin played a captain’s part. He was well supported in defence by Gavin Ward, Sean Carey and Stephen McGuire. Johnny McGuire and Sean Brennan worked tirelessly in midfield. Kevin Hogan, Noel Galvin and Kenny Dolan were prominent in attack.  It was a difficult game with no substitutes available and great credit is due to all 13 players who played and made themselves available.

GARRYCASTLE: Padraig Cosgrove, Stephen McGuire, Anthony Larkin, Peadar Mulvihill (0-1), Sean Carey, Gavin Ward, Johnny McGuire, Sean Brennan (0-1), Noel Galvin (1-0), Kevin Hogan (0-5, 3f), Kenny Dolan, Emmet Keena and Robbie Shine (0-2, 1f).
